I was looking at radiation oncology programs on the FREIDA database (on nrmp's website), and I noticed that a lot (if not most) are claiming that they are not taking applicants in 2013-2014 (i.e. MSKCC, Columbia, Jefferson etc..) . Is this a mistake, or are most programs not taking candidates next year?

I felt like the frieda website was really off about that kind of stuff this year so I would contact the program coordinators of the programs you are interested in if you still need a rotation, or just wait till the applications open up.

Last year they listed lots of programs as accepting applicants - but they ended up NOT having spots. Call program coordinators.

Like carotenoid mentions, call the program coordinators when in doubt (email works well too). I applied 2 cycles ago (jeez does time fly by) and there were def programs that were listed on ERAS that did not have spots. When you're applying to as many programs as we all do, you'll end up throwing away ~$25/program that you sent an app to but doesn't have a spot. Worse, I've met a fellow applicant who away rotated at a place that ended up not having a spot in the match. Get the info first...

Thank you for all of the replies. I definitely am going to call these a few programs to investigate further. Could it actually be true that only ONE out of TWELVE rad onc programs in New York is accepting applicants?

How could Sloan Kettering, one of the biggest programs in the country, have a year where they take no applicants?

I believe that most programs say the are not taking applicants for 2013-2014 because they technically are accepting residents into PGY2 positions, which for us would start in 2014-2015. For instance, Emory has an integrated PGY1 year and FREIDA says "yes" they are accepting applicants for 2013-2014. Unfortunately, I don't think freida will be much help in determining who will be accepting applicants this cycle. The following link shows the number of accredited spots for each program and hopefully gives an idea of how many spots each program will have open during our cycle.
