So I'm a pgy-2, and the nurse on my clinic "team" just got fired. I don't know the specifics, but I do know we have a new office manager who is notorious for cutting costs, and is very antiunion. This happened to a union LPN in an office of mostly MAs. Of course I'm am skeptical, especially because I worked my way through school as a CNA, and I am familiar with nursing unions/middle management. Of course I know that I must keep my nose and my feelings out of this matter as a resident. But as a physician in private practice, do you have any say over this kind of thing or is it entirely up to the office manager as it seems to be in our residency clinic?

Depends on if you are employed by a larger entity or if you own your practice and do the hiring yourself.

All the jobs I have had were employed and I had NO SAY about any of the staff or the hiring/firing policies. The politics only get worse the closer you get to being an attending. Another reason I do locums now because I don't want to be involved with the politics, I don't want to be on a committee, I don't want to be told how many patients I have to see, etc.

Keep in mind that your "notorious cost cutting office manager" was hired by somebody else, probably for that very reason. S/he may be a total *****hat but is taking marching orders from somebody else.

The only way you will be able to avoid this in the future is to be the one giving the marching orders (or do locums like cabinbuilder suggested).

For now, put your head down, do your work and take "comfort" in knowing that nobody in that clinic gives a sh** about you or what you think.

I love the flip side of being a resident!!!!!
