i'm wondering: does it drive you crazy to know IF you match or you want to know WHERE you match? could be both, i guess.

Yep, I'm going crazy as well. I more interested in knowing where I matched, so I can start planning for the move. Although for some reason I'm looking forward to getting that email from NRMP saying "you've matched!" since it will take my mind off march 20th for about 3 seconds. and maybe it's just because Im on an easy rotation right now and have time to sit and ponder these things...

I don't want to jinx myself, but considering the length of my ROL, I am confident that I will match somewhere. I just want to know where. Its either long and cold winters, or Waffle houses for me. I hate this inertia.

I rotated at Baylor and I did not feel that the PD was very approachable. Additionally, I wrote up some critical care stuff and she said I would only be a contributor for the chapter I wrote. That kinda rubbed me the wrong way being that I spent 2 months writing it. Also, my wife would rather live in Dallas than Houston. Hopefully it won't matter anyway because I hope to match in one of my top 5 choices.

So, I figured that since all I do is read these great posts, the least I could do is contribute and put down my #1: UT-Houston. I did an away rotation there and really enjoyed it there. The faculty were cordial, the residents were great, and it just to be a great fit for me. I know there was some drama with the chair selection process, but if Dr. Hagberg is now permanent, I think they made a great choice. Any comments about UT? Good, bad....ugly? I really wish you all the best of luck in the match and appreciate all your posts....including the puppies. =)

When I interviewed at UT Houston, I felt that the faculty and residents were genuine ( I didn't get to meet Dr. Hagberg, though) and the facilities were very nice. I was concerned about formal teaching, primarily didactic and intraop teaching weaknesses (as commented on by the residents). So, even though I love love love Texas, in the end I decided that I could not forgoe a chance to train at a different institution that had all of its cards in order.

Good luck all. I can't wait for this maddness to end.

So it looks like at least 4 out of the 9 people going into gas in my class ranked UW #1. One did not apply here due to girlfriend/couples match issues. As for the 4 I'm not positive about, a classmate and I were talking about it, and we think they all ranked UW very highly too, if not 1st...
Sorry to everyone who ranked UW #1 (including me!). Might not be as many as Mayo, but there aren't as many spots either...

In my opinion, the competitiveness rankings would go like this:

2. UTHSC-San Antonio
3. Scott and White
4. Baylor
5. UT-Houston
6. UTMB

So, what were people's reasons for ranking more than 10? I'm not saying you were wrong, just wanting to know people's reasons for ranking more than 10.

Either way, it seems like its elevating the competitiveness of anesthesia falsely no?

I ranked 12 programs. All of the NRMP data in the world is not going to comfort someone who does not match and will always have that "what if I had only ranked the rest of those schools" thought running through their heads, FOREVER. It is simple. Better safe than sorry.

I agree the level of competitiveness hype is falsely elevated. I ranked 12 programs, and then a couple prelims after them.

Why? Like Gasem said, I want to be certain I match. It's being thorough. And there was nowhere at which I interviewed where I thought I would be unhappy passing gas. So I spent the money to get there and interview, I may as well rank the place.

If you're right, and I don't drop that far on my rank list, fantastic. That means I got one of my top choices. If I drop too far down, it means I would have failed to match had I not ranked as many places. It certainly causes me no pain to rank more places.

The pain of a lot of applications was in the $1300 eras, and in the money to travel to interviews. Ranking is pain free - at least until March 20, and beyond.

I ranked everywhere I interviewed.

I applied to many more places than necessary because the information I was getting from my local attendings about various programs was limited and often self-contradictory. I wanted to go check out a bunch of programs personally and choose the ones I liked best.

This was even more true for prelims, where I knew very little and interviewed at all sorts of programs. My #1 prelim is a program I had never heard of when I applied.

Like these other people, I ranked everyplace I interviewed because I figured I'd rather go to any of those places than be unmatched.

The real question is why I went on so many interviews. Turns out that the places I would have cancelled (if I had everything to do over again) were some of the first interviews I went on. These places offered interviews earlier than others and I, in my unbounding joy and excitement, made some nonrefundable travel arrangements. Also, by the time I got some of my more "competitive" interviews, it was < 2 weeks before interviews I wanted to cancel and (according to this forum) it is in poor taste to cancel with less than 2 weeks to go. So I went on a couple more that I would have otherwise cancelled. Once I went on all the interviews, I figured there was really no good reason to not rank any one place.

If I had it to do all over, I wouldn't have purchased ANY airfare until about 1 month prior to the interview. Even though the tickets would cost more up front, I would guess that it's cheaper in the long-run than paying rebooking fees, not to mention the ability to have better control over your interview schedule.

This is a little bit off topic, but it got me thinking - what is the lowest you have ever heard of anyone matching on their ROL? I swear, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone matching lower than their 3rd or 4th, in any specialty. Maybe people are lying, and of course there are those that go unmatched...

I think in terms of spots available to spots filled, anesthesiology isn't as competitive as some specialties. That is, if you don't mind going anywhere else in the country to train. However, for example at my home program, there are 20 of us applying to gas this year (about 15% of our class). There are only 8 positions at OU, and it is well-known OU generally will only take about 1/2 of it's own grads. Many of the people applying wish to stay here since it's a strong program, family reasons, etc. So for those people, there is certainly an increase in competitiveness, as the previous classes (except for 2006 which had 17 applicants) have averaged around 10 applicants for the same number of slots.

Talking to many of the 3rd year students, it appears gas is even more of an interest in their class. If this is a nationwide trend, as many are predicting, the applicant # to spot ratio could change drastically, and boost anesthesia even further on the competition scale in the next couple of years.

And 15 years ago you couldn't hardly pay somebody to do it.

I interviewed at UTH and wasnt really impressed with the program. I think they get a good clinical experience however the condition of the hospital is pretty run down as is the anesthesia offices. Also only about 30% of the grads go into fellowship, and ALL of them go into fellowship in texas. Also only 1 or 2 of the attendings are involved in research. I needed a program with a more national reputation since I dont plan on staying in the state forever

Thanks for your reply titan. I guess its just a matter of time now. I dont know how competitive UT-Houston is but I heard that a lot of the competition for slots come from the med school itself. Either way, its all in now. I'm goin surfing this week in Irvine to keep my mind off it. Best of luck.
