Sat there and debated about it for a long time. Realistically, warm-blooded wife and new baby won't enjoy it much. Top notch program, but just didn't see us as happy in the end. Couldn't spend $$ on traveling if I knew I would be ranking many other programs in cities where my fam is happy over the Mayo.

As a coordinator, I dislike cancellations not because they cause me work (that is my job, after all), but because when they happen at the last minute it means a worthwhile candidate from my wait list won't get the opportunity to interview.

It does create spots for others as long as you give the program ~2 weeks notice. Canceling 2 days before or simply no showing is disrespectful and selfish. There are costs that the program incurs that can't be recouped with short notice cancellations (hotel reservations; faculty time $$$). If we have committed faculty time to an interview day and 1/4 of the interviewees cancel with no notice, then we are already committed to interviewing the other candidates that day so our faculty time is wasted, which is expensive.
Not to mention the fact that none of your colleagues can take the abandoned interview spot on 24-48 hrs notice. Everyone else wants to get to the magical 10 interview number as much as the next person. The candidates that suffer the most are the ones whose grades and scores are not the best. If anyone is holding on to interview spots they have no intention of actually attending, they should be ashamed. It is a matter of professionalism. It is a huge pet peeve of mine.
