went with a gut on this one

Good lord, why did you interview at so many places? Seems excessive if you ask me. You spent some money to interview this year. That being said, good luck with the match.

It's funny how it works out that all of our lists rank these same exact programs in wildly different orders. I guess maybe that's why people historically tend to get one of their top 3 - we all would have different top 3s even if we all interviewed at the exact same 10 programs.

Here goes nothing 🙂

So it doesn't really matter the order we see each other rank... unless other people are not ranking your top choices at all. Even if MS4x ranked MS4y's first choice as her 17th, if that program ranked MS4x above y, and x didn't match at her first 16 (ouch), then y still gets bumped. Hopefully, that doesn't happen often. The lists here are pretty heavy on bigger cities so far (I think?).

This is a good thread, on the other hand, in that people can see some consistent patterns with regards to which programs are usually upper half and which are lower half on many lists.

For me, it was mostly based on location. MCW is closest to my family and my fiance so I ranked it above Kentucky. I really really liked Kentucky though and would be ecstatic to match there too.

I find it interesting that you guys are ranking places like BIDMC above the brigham and MGH and not even ranking places like hopkins and ucla in the top 5. My year, people were more concerned with big name places and it seemed like the majority of posters were ranking the elite programs in their top 5...interesting. I hope you guys arent ranking places based on work hours and anecdotal stories of "malignancy". Yeah, you may work 5-10hrs less per week at BIDMC but the training doesnt even come close to the brigham or MGH.

1. This is a small sample size.
2. If you only have 10-20 hours of free time a week, the extra 10 hours can be a 50-100% increase, which can be quite significant for general well-being.
3. I think most people realize that when you're comparing BID vs. MGH, Brigham you're comparing A vs. A+
4. *My personal observation: many of the residents at "elite programs" seem to be from middle to low-ranked medical schools. I'm not questioning their competence, rather I got the impression that they didn't want to pass up the opportunity to attach a "big" name to their resume. On the contrary, many lesser-known yet comfortable programs ie. Baylor (Harvard), Loma Linda (Northwestern, UCSF, UCLA, UCSD) had a significant number of students from elite medical schools. Maybe when you have gone to a top 20 undergrad, top 20 med school, the location/happiness factor supercede the name (assuming the training is also superb).

"Yeah, you may work 5-10hrs less per week at BIDMC but the training doesnt even come close to the brigham or MGH."

What are you basing this on? I have not even heard this from MGH and the Brigham themselves. Most people seem to say that they all come out equally superb anesthesiologists, but may get there by different paths. I think it's important to consider the learning styles that each program offers. Each of the three were very different to me, and I went by where I felt I'd personally be happiest and thrive in.

I guess thats true. The teaching styles are very different at all three. MGH is more geared toward people who are independent learners. The classes are very different in respect to backgrounds with quite a few of the residents having already done anesthesia training in europe. So its hard for attendings to go from one CA-1 whose fresh from med school/intern year to another CA-1 who already has 5 years of anesthesia training and research from England. Didnt mean to knock BID, I actually really liked it when I interviewed there (their residents were the most fun of all the boston places), I guess it just wasnt for me.

Too bad program directors don't get on here and anonymously post their rank lists ;-)

Wish I had some idea of my chances for each. For all I know, I was uniformly "blah" at each program and they all ranked me as mediocre, or I was uniformly "weeeeeeeeeeee" at them and they all ranked me well. It's nuts to think that on match day (if I match) I will literally open a letter and have no idea which it will say.

Camel, you are a good candidate and you will match, probably at your top 3-4. Maybe we even get a chance to work with each other, maybe even in Cincinnati.

Very kind of you to say, and I would certainly be honored to get to work with you at UC! Out of curiosity, why'd you remove your list? I ask in case there is some reason that posting a list at this point is a bad idea.

I do think it's interesting to see the patterns, wish we could see them all anonymously at this point since no one can change anything.

I do not think posting a list matters at all, I removed mine because someone on here replied to my post with my rank list included, and since mine is lengthy, I did not want to occupy too much space on here. I actually really liked UC, people there were awesome I thought. I think we even interviewed there together.
