So now that your lists are locked in... what are programs that got you hot and which ones gave you bad vibes?

In order of my interview dates: Jacksonville, LSU-Shreveport, Parkland, Mayo, Kentucky, Oregon, UNC, Emory, Alabama, San Antonio.

I thought they were different in some areas but overall they had a strong core OMS training and would train me to be a very competent oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Sure they are different in some aspects here or there but my theory is that a resident will get out of a program what the resident wants as long as the opportunity exists at the program and the resident puts in the time and energy. And at these programs, I felt I would be able to get good exposure to all aspects of OMS. I can see myself being successful at any of these programs and would be grateful to match at any of them.

I went to LSU-Shreveport, Parkland, LSU-NO, Louisville, Vanderbilt, UMC (Mississippi)

I thought that all of the programs were fantastic. All were similar in that as a resident you'll be exposed to the procedures that seem essential to the specialty. There are definitely differences that exist between programs (see OMFS programs overview thread), but I would happily train at any of these programs. I'll comment further on UMC since I'm a student there: it's a new program and this is the first year they've offered a 6-year spot. The PD is cosmetics trained and was formerly on staff at Parkland. He's big into virtual planning and some of the latest innovations and technologies in the field. He's definitely done alot to get the program going and established in the hospital, and as new residents keep coming our numbers are increasing very rapidly. The chair is an older guy with alot of experience (PP in a hospital setting in New Jersey with a cancer team) who you can learn a great deal from. The residents are great and are some of the brightest guys I've ever been around. It seems like alot of people were skeptical to give it a look, and I'm guessing it's because of how new the program is and how seemingly little is known about it (I was the only person to interview for the 6-year position), but for the people who will be applying next year (God help me if I am), I would definitely recommend giving it a shot.

Is anyone reaching out to programs a second time around via email to set the stage for one year position possibilities in the off chance you don't end up matching?? Obviously, I hope I don't fall into this situation, but I think I'm applying to some fairly competitive programs and I want to have back up options. This would be a general follow up/thank you in order to put my name back on the radar; in the unfortunate chance I don't end up matching, my name isn't a completely mystery when I contact them about a 1yr position. Any thoughts?

On a side note, I was doing okay with keeping these nerves at bay up until this week. What are you guys doing to pass the hours. I can't seem to fill up my days enough. I'm going out of my mind!😱

Some programs, ala Temple, have sent out letters asking applicants (whom I assume they rank) to do exactly that or at least to keep them in mind to call during the post-match scramble.
