i like all the love that UAB is getting.

i am certainly happy i came to hopkins for my training, but i ranked UAB second and would have not been disappointed to go there. i am glad that people are realizing what an amazing program it is. it certainly has an excellent reputation in the anesthesia community, right up there with the top programs in the northeast and on the west coast.

There is a reason you picked Hopkins over UAB.

Come on. I'm sure UAB is a great program, but how about not turning it into something that its not.

Any of my top 3 would be fine, but I'm really, really hoping and praying for Vandy to come through. I'd be ecstatic if I matched there! I don't feel too confident though given the quality of this year's applicants and the smaller size of the program - I'm hoping the most of the superstar applicants get soaked up by the MGH/BID/Stanford/UCSF/etcs out there and I slide right in to a great program.

Great lists guys! I hope you land where you wanna be...these things seem to have a way of working out, wherever you match.

We're pretty proud of our program here in Pittsburgh - can I ask what has them ranked so low on so many lists? We hear about the "location" all the time, but if there are issues or unanswered questions, please let me know so we can work on improving things!

PM'ed you, but unrelated to this.
Thanks

Pitt is a pretty great program. Friendly, good call schedule, research powerhouse, diverse clinical sites, zillions of cases. For me in terms of 'program only', Pitt would have been easily my number 1. Unfortunately, though Pittsburgh is a great place, it doesn't have the 'urban rep' or 'west coast weather' that seem to draw people to different programs...Which is a shame because it really is an awesome program, I think one of the best I saw on my interviews.

^So did I!. Looks like we have about the same number of unfilled positions as last year.

How do you know how many unfilled positions there are? I thought you can't see them unless you didn't match?

Regional Match Statistics by Speciality under My Reports after you log into NRMP.

login to nrmp and they give you breakdown for that year regional statistics. You will not see schools that have unfilled spots unless you did not match or decide to look it up later in the data they publish.

Good luck and congrats to all!

The undererdog did not. 😳🙁

I'm sorry things didn't work out for you.. keep your chin up mate! Work smart tomorrow! I don't know if you're a DO or not... but I had DO Transitionals in my back pocket in case I didn't match. If you are, I'd look into those options. If not, scramble hard for prelim medicine and/or anesthesia spots! I wish you best of luck and prayers be your way!

Dude, my thoughts exactly! Good luck and hope to see you there!

why didn't you rank more programs my man

Agree with El Dooderino; It does seem from your list that you're a strong candidate. Maybe you just got too much false loving from programs. Either way it sucks, and I hope you come out of the scramble A-OK. 51 open positions in anesthesia this year! :xf::luck:

Congrats everybody! I'm pretty sure I know were I'm going based on process of elimination and a friendly email from NRMP. I'm stoked!

FYI, if you matched advanced but not into a PGY1 year you can email NRMP and they will tell you the city you matched into. Depending on how many programs there are in a particular city, it's not too difficult to know where you matched.

Best of luck to anyone going through the scramble. With 50 spots open you guys should have some good success.:xf::luck:

Sure - it's a great program, but for me it was mainly location plus a couple other negative points that led me to rank it lowly.

1. Location: UPMC main campus is located in a run-down area of the city, many shotty-looking homes in disrepair surround the hospitals, nearby neighborhoods have crime issues. Pittsburgh is one of the cloudiest cities in the country, long winters. Nightlife/bars/clubs inferior to larger/trendier cities though the situation is improving. On the plus side, the city is very affordable on a resident's salary.

2. Program: Large SRNA training program with many, many CRNAs. I list this as a negative as I see militant CRNAs as a future threat to the profession and I worry about losing procedures to nurses/nursing students or being treated like a glorified CRNA. Also, large numbers of DOs as residents in the program. Although they might be just as good as MD residents, I didn't see this at other elite programs and it leads me to believe Pitt isn't as selective as these places.

3. Other stuff: I wished they would have offered more perks to make the program more appealing, ie, technology stipend, relocation expenses, additional assistance w housing, etc. Vandy offered really generous relocation assistance ($2500) plus a technology allowance for new iPhone/MacBook etc, valet service. It wouldn't sell me on the place, but it definitely was a nice perk that made me think they really care about their residents and want to help.

These are just my observations. I know it's a top tier program that offers great clinical and research training. I just found other programs to be more compelling.

👍 Thanks for your candor - understandable (and even valid) points of concern.

Best of luck in the match!

Thanks. US allo grad, applied to 10, got 5. Got the usual great applicant stuff and figured with 6 contiguous ranks (Pitt Cat/Adv) I had a ~90% chance of matching. Turns out I am just that :luck:

Well maybe UCSF didn't fill again this year? :xf:

Seriously though, I'll try to touch base with Pitt in the AM and see if they'd consider me if I reapply for an advanced spot after a preliminary year of medicine or surgery.

Matched|! Hoping Michigan! or Brigham....either way I'd be ecstatic!! Good luck everyone!!

In case anyone is wondering, that worked out far better than it could've 😀

Got a categorical spot at a place I applied to, which had decided not to interview me
