Hello everyone. I am a second year who will write the exam in June 2011. Meanwhile let this be a good thread where everyone share their study progress and recent trend of the exam.

I took my exam 4/20 and received my score today. That is exactly 3 weeks ago. I took pretty much every assessment, but I ended up scoring lower on the real exam, then almost every assessment. Everything is listed in chronological order.

Studying Before 5th Semester.
NBME 1 (5/31/10)- 430/207
NBME 2 (6/30/10)- 520/227
NBME 3 (7/30/10)- 490/220
NBME 4 (9/1/10)- 530/229
Kaplan Qbank Average-70%
School Administered Comprehensive (10/20/10)- 83%
Dedicated Prep January-April
USMLERX- 80%
NBME 5 (2/3/11) -640/253
USMLE Consult- 80%
USMLE consult scorolator- 253
NBME 6 (3/28/11)-650/253
UWSA 1 - 800/265
UWSA 2- 770/263
NBME 7- 660/257
NBME 11- 650/254
NBME 12- 610/ 247
Uworld- 80%
Free 150 (2011) -97%
DIT predictive test 86%

I felt the exam was not very challenging. I Kind of wish it was harder, since i think i knew more then what i was tested over. I had trouble hearing the heart sound questions, and wish i had listened to the different murmurs the night before. Overall the test felt on comparable difficulty as the Free 150.

Nice job. But holy cow, 4 months of prep?

Still a very solid score, major congrats on that. You also don't seem to have scored lower than your practice tests except for one NBME. The UWSAs should not really be used as predictors, as they seem to overestimate by 10-20, IMO. For those scoring 265/265, they MAY underestimate just because the score is capped...

I do agree that the NBMEs seem to trend toward more straightforward, more clinical, and less minutiae-based, which is good and bad. Bad in that stupid mistakes are going to hurt you way more, but good in that even big-picture / late-bloomer students can attain very high scores with limited prep materials (FA, UWorld, Goljan) and time.

Regardless, that is an awesome score. Hope I can do that well on the real deal next week

For anyone who cares....I got my scores today. I got a 235. I took NBME 12, 4 days before my exam and scored a 204. This was demoralizing to say the least since I was averaging low 70s on USMLEWorld. My advice is DO NOT take a practice test. I know some people find them reassuring but for me it was just awful. I lost all confidence the week of my exam and it just was miserable. Also, this goes to show you how inaccurate they can be. If you feel you absolutely must take one...just take it with a grain of salt and use it to see the areas you are weaker in, not as a score predictor. Just an FYI 🙂

Also, I walked out of my exam feeling awful about it (like I felt like I didn't know at least 1/2 of the questions and I was expecting to see a low 200 score)....I think this is how most people feel so don't get too down on yourself if this is how you felt too....you will likely be surprised 🙂

Good luck to everyone!

Awesome Job!!!

really? Your conclusion is don't take them at all based on the one exam you took? How about don't take one 4 days before your test to avoid being demoralized if you see a score you weren't expecting........for the majority of peopel they are very accurate. Congrats on the score btw!

I received my score report today. I'm really excited & relieved. I've been reading these posts for a few months and they were helpful so here's what I did in a little less than 8 weeks of dedicated study time-

- Started with NBME 6- 480/218
- First 6 weeks- Went through first aid for the first time. First aid was my main resource throughout. I only used other sources if I had no idea what first aid was talking about (read a few pages of high yield embryology, high yield gross anatomy, and a neuroanatomy atlas). While I was going through 1st Aid the 1st time, I also used micro cards for bacteria in 1st aid (was not about to go through every virus & parasite as well) and Pharmcards for all drugs in 1st aid. I used RR path with the organ systems in first aid just for the pictures & the blue notes in the margins. I did 100-200 USMLEworld questions for each section in 1st Aid. I only did 10 questions at a time because I felt that i could get through the explanations much faster than if I did longer blocks (I'd get bored, lose motivation, etc but 10 questions seemed manageable). I started off ~70% on world & ended up with 83%. I like writing while I study so my copy of first aid has more handwriting than actual printed words. Most of my annotations came from world and RR path.
- 3 weeks into studying I took USMLEworld self assessment 1- 248
- After the 1st 6 weeks when I went through all of first aid, took NBME7- 650/257
- Week 7- went through First Aid thoroughly again. Did USMLEworld questions for all subjects in blocks of 10 again
-Beginning of week 8 (Monday before my Thurs exam- not sure if I'd recommend this but...)- NBME 12- 700/268
- For the rest of the week I finished up the remaining questions in USMLEworld & went over some (50-100?) of the questions I had missed the first time.
- The day before my test I read the micro chapter in first aid again just because I know I can retain that information for about 2 days and went through the rapid review section at the end of first aid.
- After the test was done I just felt exhausted, more stressed than when I was going into the test, and really unsure of how it went. I felt much better after a few margaritas 🙂

Now for some advice:
- Do what you know works best for you rather than listening to everything you hear from classmates, teachers, other SDNers 😉 etc.
- Don't try using too many resources (unless of course that's what you're used to/like). I was completely overwhelmed the first week just looking at all of the books I had bought for step1. Once I found my groove and focused mainly on 1st aid and world I felt much less overwhelmed and still felt prepared
- Make sure you take breaks & do things that you enjoy. It will make you feel much less miserable and I think that your studying will be more productive. I really took it easy on the weekends- skiied, went out, hung out with my boyfriend and my family, went away for a weekend when I was halfway through. I ultimately think that this helped me a lot and I was always ready to study hard again come monday.

Hope this was at least a little helpful. Good luck to everyone who's studying. You will all survive 🙂

awesome job guys and thanks for sharing your experience!

btw: I'll have what she (ana) is having 😛!

Well to be fair NBME 12 is a lot tougher than the other exams IMO; I did considerably worse on it than NBME 11 or 7.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who thought this. My grade on 12 went down despite having done like 80% of Uworld between it and my previous NBME.

Is FA weak in any areas? Our 3rd year class said FA was inadequate in Microbio/Anatomy/Pharmacology, but I would REALLY like to just memorize FA cold and do Qbanks with miscellanous outside resources (Kaplan notes, Goljan, etc.). Thanks

Yeah, I mean my score was probably 10 points or so lower than it should have been because my head was definitely not "there" when I took it so I made a number of stupid mistakes; it also has a lot of nitpicky and tough questions however. Compared to this I thought NBME 7 was a lot more fair and 11 was a lot less insane of an exam.

Micro? I actually think FA does a decent-ish job with Micro

Anatomy is definitely a little inadequate, especially pelvic and some aspects of neuro (brainstem and such)

Pharm... it depends. Some things are covered okay, others are not. I annotated the hell out of the Neuropsych pharm, but I barely had to write anything for the GI, MSK, or Antineoplastic.

I think the other thing FA is sort of a bit weak in is Immunology

General path/oncology. The section is terrible and just a random amalgamation of **** with no real organization. Go with Goljan for that.

Well after talking with several of my friends who did multiple practice tests they found that they did 20-30 points higher on the real exam than on any NBME. So based on the people I know, I just felt like it wasn't very accurate and therefore a waste of time and money. I realize this isn't the case for everyone but it's just another opinion 🙂

Agreed, though thats quite a different attitude than your last post had!

really? I thought FA was money for micro and pharm. This is an opinion that I feel is pretty well accepted. Also, these subects are veeeeeeeery straight forward on the exam. Most of the micro questions just simply wanted you to say what the organism was. It doesn't get more basic than that. If you have the time, Kaplan pharmacology is also awesome. Anatomy is one of the subjects most people agree needs an outside source. I used the Kaplan notes and found it really good - only one pelvis anatomy question that I didn't feel prepared for. The others questions I felt were fair and I should have known based on the resources I used. Also, Kaplan anatomy has lots of CT/MRI images which I havent seen in many other sources.

I hope I score 20-30 points higher than my last NBME! 😀😀

Don't let me down 😉.

can someone shed some light on whether the exam is more like the uworld assessments or the NBME exams in their level of difficulty....i find the NBMEs are doable but for some reason I am doing horrible on the uworld assessments and my exam is in a few days and i dont feel ready at all

Most ppl say it's easier than Uworld. Pretty sure people tend to score considerably higher, in terms of percentage, on the step exam. However, having said that, it's your relative position to other students that matter.

GL on your exam 🙂

what do you mean by relative position to other students?

i thought that wasn't the case! are u graded according to who takes the exam with you on that certain day or how does it work?

It's not based on the score of other test-takers that particular day, but your score is based on a relative scale set up by the NBME after they look at how students have scored historically. They adjust this every now and then, leading to the bump in minimal passing score that happened last year. I think I am correct in saying this. Anyone else?

Sounds about right yeah. I think the passing went up by a couple points but the average is about the same actually.

Bwahaha. My school supposedly dropped the ball in Pharm/Micro, maybe thats why they felt so unprepared. I don't like to use too many resources so I'm trying to keep it simple. So when people say "Kaplan Pharmacology and Anatomy," do they mean the lecture notes + lecture? I'm trying to find these badboys on amazon and only the lecture notes keep popping up.

for anatomy the lecture notes will be more than enough. For pharm, highly recommend finding the videos done by Dr Ramon to supplement the notes. i think it was 2007. Those are a must.

hey guys.. so my internet connection crapped out when i was saving teh block of UWorld i finished... so i saved it to my desktop but now i have NO idea how to view it? anyone know?
thanks!!

you go to utilities tab in UW and upload that file to the software. It will upload and give u ur feedback 🙂

So this is day 1 of studying for me and I'm making it through behavioral sci/biochem in FA.

Is it just me or is trying to read the biochem section in FA, especially the metabolic pathways, incredibly painful?

Any recommendations on how to master biochem from step 1? At this point I'm considering just reviewing all I've learned in FA and then solidifying knowledge more through Uworld.

i thought the biochem kaplan videos were pretty good, the guy does a good job with them and then after that you can read the FA section!

Learn the graphs and the rest makes sense in FA. If you have trouble learning the graphs, use an outside resource.

Hey guys,
So i took Step 1 yesterday FINALLY
Someone said this earlier but it is true, how well you do is based upon your state of mind during the exam, if you got enough sleep, etc.
I again did not sleep the night before the test. I was fine until the last 10 qs in the first block. I start feeling dizzy and thought i was going to faint. I forced myself to make it through that block and then take a break even though i hadnt planned on taking one that early. So then i took a break ate some candy and drank some water and went back in. I felt dizzy during the whole 2nd block also so i decided to lean back as far as possible in my chair and that made me feel better so i took most of my blocks like that. I probably looked really funny but oh well. Anyways, blocks 3-7 were ok and i felt fine. I ran out of time on every single block didnt get to check any of my marked answers. I thought my exam was realllly hard. I didnt have ONE question from any previous NBMES/UW. Also the pelvic anatomy KILLED ME!!! If i had to give one piece of advice for future test takers it would be TO STUDY PELVIC ANATOMY!!!!! I heard many ppl say this but i guess i didnt listen. I think i passed but def didnt get a 99 🙁 I guess we will find out in 3 weeks. Also FA is def all u need for the last couple weeks of studying. Id recommend reading it as many times as possible and making sure you get those stupid details down. If anyone has any qs feel free to ask. Anyways, im happy to be done!!! Time to catch up on some sleep.

what do you guys think about how the free 150 score correlates with the real deal?? im having a super hard believe my score....

Thanks for sharing your experience man. I have problems too with not eating, feeling dizzy, random autonomic responses like that. I feel you man. During my CBSE I felt like fainting once and had to put my head down. Did you eat breakfast in the morning?

What exactly do you recommend for pelvic anatomy? Are we talking about pelvic floor, urogenital diaphragm, pudendal nerve sort of questions or more like CT scans and MRIs? I'm thinking about just memorizing the crap out of HY anatomy.

Thanks again man I know it's hard to think positively but if you did well on the NBME's you should score similarly on the real deal.

Most people leave thinking they didn't do so well, but it usually doesn't mean anything. I know you had a tough road due to the tornadoes, but I'm sure you will end up doing well. You definitely deserve it!

I also had a question about the pelvic anatomy. Is it questions where you have to know the muscular and nerve function in word form, or do you have a lot of images where you have to ID structures pertaining to the question stem? Thanks!

Are we talking about pelvic floor, urogenital diaphragm, pudendal nerve sort of questions or more like CT scans and MRIs? I'm thinking about just memorizing the crap out of HY anatomy.

YES
exactly BOTH. and for anatomy in general know all the CT scans!
I had one question that asked a question and then each answer choice A, B, C, D was each a CT scan!

I feel like some of the anatomy you wouldnt know even if you studied the crap out of anatomy, so i guess you can only do so much.

the FA biochem section IS painful to go through.. 🙁

I knoooow I'm doing it for the first time this week...I'm sitting here and the book is open, but the info is not jumping into my brain...I should focus on it, but then again, Simpsons is on

....mmmm insanity peppers

Took the exam today. Anatomy was definitely my weakest, but I didn't really care at that point. There was one I had no idea whatsoever, but the others I could narrow down and make a guess.

I don't think it's high yield to go through all of anatomy from 1st year for this.

Edit:

I see some FA biochem talk. FA did a great job with biochem so KNOW THAT LIKE THE BACK OF YOUR HAND. Same for embryo. I spent the first 4 days of my study schedule ONLY going through those two sections.

I went through them a dozen times over my 5 week study schedule and it paid off. Don't shortchange those sections...I got barely any renal questions and a lot of lysosomal storage, glycogen storage, vitamins, etc, problems.

Edit #2:

How long does it take to get scores at this point in the examination cycle? My print out says 8 weeks (WTF?), but I've heard 4 weeks depending on when your prometric site uploads the exam. Thanks.

Thanks Master. I've heard about the anatomy on the test but didn't want to put myself through all that. I'm thinking I have to now. I definitely won't get too bogged down on it but I'll get through HY anatomy. Thanks man.
