Hello everyone. I am a second year who will write the exam in June 2011. Meanwhile let this be a good thread where everyone share their study progress and recent trend of the exam.

Took it today- I'm an average student and I thought it was hard compared to UW questions overall but I did have some easy questions.

I would say my test was 30% micro/immuno- I hate immuno and I had at least 3-4 questions per block on it! Didn't think it was overly balanced as I barely had any pharm or path. Felt the neuro questions were straight forward and only had 2 heart sounds- 1 very straight forward the other one not so much. As far as anatomy went I had 1 pelvic question and then most of the others were on limb anatomy. No brain stem questions but several brain cross sections (which I love). Also had a lot of vitamin deficiency questions and biochem. Honestly if I was going to study for the version I got I would basical review the first half of FA like 10 times and the organ systems once.

I don't feel overly confident with my performance and am just praying for a pass- goal was 215 but at this point just will be glad to not retake it!

Here are a few of my stats

First go through UW (mostly over Christmas-Feb)- 43% a mix of random and subject specific resent in late April with ~15% left when I was down to just path and pharm questions since I wanted to do random blocks.
Second Pass UW- 62% time random 45% complete- had been closer to 70% for last 1.5 weeks
CBSE in March- 165
CBSE in May- 185- 4 weeks before exam
UWSA1- 206- 2 weeks before exam
DIT self assessment- 219 1 week before exam

Congrats on being done. It's an achievement just studying and making it through the test. Remain positive and hopeful - and maybe a little drunk. Enjoy the rest of the weekend and the rest of your time off.

Pat yourself on the back for finishing a damn hard exam, and go celebrate! What will happen will happen, and I'm sure you walked out doing a lot better than you thought 🙂

Take tomorrow off!!! The worst thing you can do is go into this beast burnt out. Close the book tonight, sleep in tomorrow and do something you find fun!

I had planned on reviewing for a few hours in the a.m. at the most. I'm terrible at pharm and just can't seem to retain enough of it. I was thinking of reviewing at least that in first aid. Not sure though. I can definitely see the utility of just relaxing tomorrow. Although, I kinda suck at trying to relax. haha

(Oh, and I totally read your post in Sheldon's voice. In my head, you know, not aloud. haha. I'm going crazy.)

Do not do it man!!! Listen to the man. You don't want to be in the middle of the test going....fudge I'm tired!

took the test today, feel like ****, and i know blah blah everyone feels like ****. Well, I also don't know if everyone feels like they guessed the entire time either. except for a large majority of micro and pharm questions. I felt the general system questions, most things were fairly complicated and not very straightforward.

I have scored 219 on NBME 11, 12, and one uworld, and 221 on number 7.

I felt like this compared to everything else, uworld, nbme, etc. was the hardest.

Thank God it's over. I hope to God I don't have to do it again.

How long does it take between arriving at the testing center and actually starting the test?

I've noticed that when I do blocks in series, my first one tends to be lower. I was thinking I'll do a Uworld block right before I go to keep the momentum going right from the beginning and to calm my nerves...weird idea?

Glad you got it over bud. Just use the suppression mechanism.

Since this is evidently your first post and I'm guessing you're a long time lurker, all the same, congrats on being done and welcome 🙂

thanks, I have lurked for quite some time. I came here today to look for comfort after finishing which has possibly been the hardest exam I have taken in my entire life.

DIT was a waste

At my testing center; about 5 mins.

I was actually thinking about doing the same thing, but then I thought that might make my last few blocks lower (burn-out) so maybe it'd be a wash in the end anyways.

Hey Guys, just a quick q. How bad was neuro on the exam? I got this Lipincott's q&a for neuro and this thing is so freaking deep with the questions that I'm a little freaked out.

I haven't taken the test yet, but neuro is one of my weakest subjects and I went over High Yield Neuroanatomy in less than a day. I highly recommend it!

5 min is good. Like a regular break. I think I'll do this. I'll bank on my adrenaline rush to keep me through the last block.

Hey Guys, just a quick q. How bad was neuro on the exam? I got this Lipincott's q&a for neuro and this thing is so freaking deep with the questions that I'm a little freaked out.

The neuro on mine was not obtuse - and I was worried about it because neuro isn't my strongest subject either. However, when I did get brain slides they almost always had to do with cranial nerves and other stuff that was well-explained in FA. I had wanted to go through HY Neuro, but I didn't have time and ultimately it wouldn't have made much difference.

A few other tips as I remember more from the test...

- Make sure you "brief" yourself on FA soon before the exam. The day before I took the beast, I paged through FA in its entirety refreshing my memory on particular details and this was responsible for a lot of points. The morning of my exam (which started at 12 noon), I reviewed the toughest material again and this squeezed out quite a few more pts. In fact, when I reviewed FA looking for answers I found that a lot of dumb mistakes came from sections I wasn't able to review the morning of.

- Review Webpath. Now that I think about it, my test had a ton of gross pics, microscopic slides etc. I'm glad I decided to go through Webpath about a week before the test to beef up my knowledge...I'm not sure how I would have fared had I not done that.

- If you can find a testing center that has a 12 noon opening, do it! I had no idea you could even start the usmle at noon, but you indeed can and it gave me a lot more time to look through material the morning of (and sleep longer too). The testing centers that do this tend to be the ones in urban areas that are open longer and can accommodate someone starting an 8 hr test at noon (my particular center didn't close till 10 pm).

My neuro questions were cake- basically had a few cross sections and patient lost xyz function, had one aphasia based question, and a few questions on the different dementias (one question I had no idea on but reading a neuro textbook wouldn't have helped for it personally) nothing overly hard but neuro has a rep for being the hardest of our courses and our class consistantly scores almost 1 SD above national mean on the NBME shelf for it.

Thanks guys. I officially think this neuro q book is overkill then based on the types of questions this thing is asking me. I don't think I could have answered them even while I was in neuro.

Are we allowed to look at FA during the breaks?

Also, how do you recommend reviewing webpath? I see their webpage has options for gen, systemic, histo, path tutorials, and multi subject tutorials. Thanks, and congrats on being done!

I had no brainstem neuro, but a couple of cortex/basal ganglia/aphasia neuro questions per block. None of them were hard but I made sure to study it from HY Neuro beforehand. The only weird question I remember having from neuro was an MRI of the eyes (really?) and it was talking about someone with INO, has arrows pointing to the extraocular muscles, and asks "which of the following muscles is unable to function in conjugate gaze".

If I understand the question right, the answer should have been medial rectus, correct?

yes to med. rectus in the INO question. that would suck i hate MRIs of the eyes. creeps me out the way the skull looks.

anyway...test is wednesday. plan on taking tuesday off. gone through FA my final time and have a 'final review packet' i'm going to read monday that has all my 'why can't i remember this' topics. but today, my schedule says 'anatomy/embryo'...for the life of me i cannot study. i've dicked around for about 2 hours and only gone through thorax. any suggestions on how to get through these last few days? i know i need to keep sharp but good lord this is painful. -thanks

Mix in practice problems with reading. This will help with recall and keep you awake. If you are studying anamtomy and embryo - just select those sections in whatever Q bank you have and do 10 quesions after every 45 minutes of reading.

hello all,
slightly in panic mode here. I took NBME 11 today and I got 12 points less than I got with NBME 7 exactly a week ago. Thats disconcerting. I have finished 2 qbanks, DIT etc. I am currently on my 2nd run through World. I take the exam on the 24th, and I cant afford a repeat of todays score. I am wondering if anybody else had the same experience of a large discrepancy between NBME 7 and 11. Let me know if you have any insights.

Too much to give an example! It's not that the topic isn't in FA, just that the detail you need to answer the question isn't in there, haha

Whoa, whoa. I think before everyone about to take the test panics and thinks that First Aid was not the best reference tool to base their studying off of...

You need to consider that it doesn't matter if question writers have "caught on" to the fact that people use First Aid...First Aid has been around for over 20 years. It's not like they found out about it last year and started writing questions completely differently. Use your own logic to assess this poster's judgement. Even if a question submitter writes a ridiculous question with minutia that is found outside of First Aid, there's a very good chance that the question will not do well at all experimentally, since the overwhelming majority of test takers used FA as their basis. These questions that deviate far from First Aid are more likely to get tossed than used.

Some of us know professors who have submitted very "clever" questions for Step 1 that they probably give themselves a big pat on the back on for its complexity...but in the back of my mind, I'm thinking "if I'm in your CLASS and can't even answer it, I doubt it's going to do well on the national level.

I've really began to appreciate a solid question writer these past 2 years. There is a definite art to writing a good question.

Side note, I've decided that after my exam I am going to stop by the shooting range on the way to my parents' house and put a couple of mags into my First Aid 2010 (Giving my 2011 to someone). I think it will be worthwhile experience if I don't go comatose and plow into a wall from sheer exhaustion while driving there.

Wow, just when I was going to post and ask what I should do. I'm on my final run through of FA before the big day (this saturday) and I was having a hard time focusing on reading and writing down my "why can't i remember this" packet.

I'm sure there's a lot of other people out there wondering the same... this is so painful it's like rubbing my eyes with tabasco, or putting slivers underneath my nails.

1) Yes.

2) I went through all the systemic path pics and did all the quiz qs in the subjects I needed to brush up on. The tutorials seemed to have a lot of low yield/unimportant material, so I didn't bother with those. I did some general path sections also.

i just looked at some of the 'avg' scores for step 1 for some of the stuff i'm interested in. definitely reminded me why i did this to myself for the past month...still, embryo just makes me annoyed haha.

yeah seriously. embryo. reviewing gross anatomy too. so annoying haha

Medgirl13 lost all credibility in my eyes when she rambled about her conspiracy theory that UWorld purposefully doesn't randomize a lot of subjects just so that they can get people to re-purchase and make more money.

appreciate your input, not hating at all, but really there's like 1 million posts about how FA and Uworld (and in previous years RR) were the magic formula, and if we don't go to those resources, where are we sposed to turn? sure, your exam was a different experience, but for students who can barely manage to memorize those high-yield tried-and-tested (x1 million) resources, how the heck are we sposed to have time to turn to textbooks and random references... so yea. good for you that you worked hard during 2nd year and that your methods worked for you. hope you get taht 260+. i'll be happy with that 259.

Also assess whether the poster has actually taken the exam or not. There's a lot of people who havent taken it yet, but will defend FA to no end because that's what *they're* using to study.

It is also wrong to assume that a difficult question is in fact "experimental". Experimental items consist of easy, medium, and hard in terms of level of difficulty. My source--> parents who are in the standardized test publishing business.

Most people who have *taken* the exam and come on here stating their opinion of the utility of FA for their exam are coming from a neutral and experienced place. What purpose would it serve to come on here and bash FA? It think most people, myself included, are coming from a place of wanting to support others and give them an opportunity to remedy their study plan (if they so chose) before they might get a big surprise on test day. With that said, I don't think anyone is claiming FA wont help you score some major pointage on the exam...just maybe not a 260+ if that's the main resource you use. Again, grain of salt...

I had no idea we were talking about what it takes to get 260+. I apologize. You are correct. I would have no idea what it would take to accomplish this feat nor would I pretend to know.

Also, I did not say all difficult questions are experimental. I was merely alluding to the idea of probability, and how everything is based around a curve. How many questions can fall outside of the general knowledge that the test takers bring into the room on test day before the curve becomes skewed? There is a limit to these types of questions.

Either way, best of luck to you.

UW recalls marked questions because...you marked them. it's pretty chronological/makes sense. you can get past that by making tests and suspending them to get a more random vibe, or just asking them to reset your test bank. of all the companies i've dealt with so far, UW is by far the gold standard. their customer service and product are hands down the best. although i don't know what's up with educus, i've tried to look at the articles and there's no pdf link to be found...or i may be missing it haha.

Ok that was mean, i apologize...but you want to question me and what i have to say, because I took myself off of the FA bandwagon after my exam. Ive come on here to be helpful not to make you feel bad about your study plan. Believe me! If you dont want to take my advice, thats fine! Do what works for YOU, not me! Go take your exam feeling confident about what you've done. I apoplogize if you have found what I have to say unsettling for you. Good luck to all...

Thanks for sharing your experience. This is the forum to share what you thought about the test and we appreciate you sharing what you did to prep for it. I think all of us got freaked out because we thought if we just use FA and UWorld we will fail (meaning that's how hard you thought the test was) but since you said that applies for someone aiming for a 260 it makes a lot more sense. I do really appreciate the input and your thoughts on the test. I think we are all just a little highstrung round test time. You know how that is or was since you are now done.

I got owned on 11 compared to 7 - particularly the end of block 3, and also generally block 2. Anyone else?

Any info on these kinetoplasmids?
