Hey guys,
I matched at my 6th choice (also did the couples match) and I'm not super excited about my program. It's sad because it is a good program, but I think I just had my hopes set higher, on more "fancy" academic types of programs. Is anyone else out there not 100% happy and already thinking about possibly trying to switch later? I know it's horrible to think this way so soon, but sometimes I can't help it.
I'm a second year OB Resident. I matched into a program that wasn't my first choice. Nowhere near it actually and was pretty devastated after the match on where I was ending up.
Like yourself, I did want to go to a higher powered academic program and didn't exactly end up in that type of a situation. I can honestly say that I am very happy with my training and the program is going out of their way to assist me in fellowship placement.
Do you have fellowship goals? If so, which type? An academic OB GYN residency will assist in that but matching into fellowship from a community program is possible with some extra hard work on your end.
As far as switching residencies, I don't think it will be a viable option based on just not being happy with being in a non academic place. The CREOG Clearinghouse does list vacanies, and there will be second year openings and intern year openings as you start residency since the attrition rate in OB is relatively high. You will need your PDs support for any transfer and they will likely not give you this support since they will have to fill your spot etc.
My main advice, love the place where you are at. This program has shown that they want you as their resident. Work hard, impress your attendings, do well on your CREOGs and Step 3, and work on some research.
If you need any additional advice, PM me. I have been in your shoes and it does get better.
