even if it is >265 what difference does it make? i gave my exact score here and neither ISIS nor al-qaeda knocked on my doors...
I agree with you, like I said I don't necessarily see a reason. I think it's more for residencies than in general. For instance if you have a 276 and a PD sees a 276, it nearly guarantees they know who you are on the forum. I don't have anything to hide on my post history so I don't care, but some people might.

Colleagues. They can quite easily and quickly discover who you are on here, usually without trying (if you are talking to friends about a concept and then ask a similar question on here for example). I will likely post something here for guidance to others as I have received much valuable guidance myself. But I will not be posting my exact score, no

Bit irrational though considering that you'd have to look up scores from 2 years prior in order to identify a current applicant.

PDs would have to be extremely obsessed with SDN to remember every score posted here. Besides why is it a bad thing for them to know ?

Sorry if this sounds dumb but curiosity is killing me... Why do people report scores like >240 , >230 , etc etc.. and not the exact score?? Arent Americans allowed to post exact score online??

Yeah, especially on SDN where scores are really high. Not too many 267's floating around...

Meh, you don't have to be anonymous on this forum, but I think it is a good idea just to be safe. That being said, anyone who has met my dog knows who I am 😛

I actually look at both on a daily basis and noticed minutiae differences. If it's annotated I wouldn't want to go through that again

Going off of this, do you/anyone else have a good plan for studying some of the new additions (Public Health in particular). I read that section and was a bit confused as to whether I should investigate more, or just try to reason through it on the exam the best I can. Any thoughts?

Has anyone who has taken the exam recently shed some light on their experience? I'm taking the exam on Tuesday and could use some advice to get me through these last couple days!

It's literally one page and I think it's included in the sample they have on the first aid website.

Perhaps you misunderstood my question. I was simply asking those with experience how they felt was best to review this material, or if further review was needed at all. Clearly it was added to the newest edition for a reason. Again though I don't know, that is why I'm asking.

I was curious about this question also- for the people that recently took the exam, were your questions in public health found in first aid? (Most of you didn't even look at the 2016 version but I'm just curious).

I know of three IMGs this year who have been banned from taking any more Step exams b/c they discussed questions or details from their Step 1 exam in online forums. It is rare yes, but our dean told us of these students this past summer so I don't see any benefit for the ppl on the threads or myself to give unneeded details about myself or the exam. The NMBE cares about this not PDs. If you want to know my exact score sorry I don't care to share it. It might not make a difference by sharing my exact score but I don't stand to gain anything so I won't do it. I gave back a little b/c these forums are excellent and have aided me greatly. Relax guys.

Thanks so much for the response. Hopefully it did not seem as if I was trying to ask anything out of line or inappropriate, was simply attempting to discuss study strategies with others. I certainly do not want anyone to violate any rules or regulations. Thanks for trying to help in the appropriate manner.

Is it bad if I'm using a 2014 FA for the 2016 exam? All my annotations are in there so idk what to do!
If you have more than 3 months before the test then definitely get FA 2016 and transfer your annotations.
Transferring annotations actually helped me to learn FA and found that some of the points I had in my annotations were added to the new FA.
I found that it is a great way to review FA with your own notes.

Ok. Sorry I was trying to give advice since I use both FA 2014 and FA 2016. I have not taken the USMLE exam yet so I cannot comment how much public health was on there.

Hey guys,

I got my score back (>270) and I'm currently doing a write-up. I haven't been able to post it because work has been hectic lately. If anyone has any questions aside from the usual (resources used, NBME/UW scores) feel free to post them and I'll try to add the information to the write-up.

I'd also like to thank everyone that has been of help here; reading the experiences really helped throughout the grind. Special thanks to @Phloston @kirbymiester @mcloaf and others whose advice was golden.

Thats scary dude. discussing real exam questions is no wonder a bad and risky idea, but sharing scores and experience is another thing altogether.
just like your salary, your choice you want to give approximation or the exact figure

We find it interesting that someone used our hitherto unknown startup's name in their UserID on SDN. Just for the sake of clarity - The account posting this message is the official account of the Last Aid USMLE Team. Thanks ! 🙂

(Admins of this forum, we are not advertising or anything..just wanted to clear the air and wrote a post. Would appreciate it if this post is allowed to stay. Just wanted people to know about the official account to prevent confusion.)

guys, my exams in a week. finishing 3rd pass of FA but my days are limited and im going slow. so im wondering if maybe in two or three days, regardless of what I still have left to review, if I should carry on trying to finish 3rd pass (still have repro, resp, micro, biochem, behav, path, pharm, immuno + random pharm pages/tables (like aortic arches) that I skipped) or just go over specific areas that I could possibly brush upon. i still have to do free 150 and review nbme incorrects, was planning on doing that 2 days out, on last day I have to travel to another city to write exam, wasnt planning on doing much but was gonna bring FA with me in case I started tripping about some factoid). probably a terribly written post but my thoughts are all over the place and mentally im not on earth atm, so bear with me. any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks. Hopefully this isn't obnoxious, but again just wanted to clarify how I'd love to hear from anyone with experience, not just those that have taken the test. If someone has an MPH or pubic health experience or something and feels like they know a good way to approach the material or the level we should understand it as 2nd year medical students, that would be great as well. Just trying to get a sense for the public health, safety science, etc stuff.

I really have no idea. I'm banking on knowing I need to wash my hands, glove up, and not stab myself (or others)

your feeling is understandable
easier said than done, but you need to get your mindset on track.the last week of studying wont significantly augment your performance but it can get worse if you dont play it right. In exams, there will be very very few questions you will get wrong by failing to recall things. so just revise your content starting with micro and pharm , you have just about enough time to do that

@walakin25 Order of importance imho : Micro = Pharm > Immuno > Path >>>> all others so try to do these first and maybe tables-equations from Repro/Behavioral Sci-statistics

biochem / resp etc should be ingrained to your brain now , one extra pass wont save you if you havent mastered stuff like that already so if you skip them , no big deal.. In my prep I didnt have time for MSK/Repro/Psychiatry/Ethics review but it didnt cost me any q's

Good luck!!

Congrats. Thanks for the tag although the only person who did the studying was you. I'm sure people on this forum will value your write-up and the insights you can provide into the new format of the exam and unexpected info that surfaced, now that step 2-like questions have been surfacing. Needless to say have a few beers.
I've actually had quite a few beers since. 😀 I just have to say though, your guide was very helpful in many ways, so thanks!

You're the man. Really happy to hear I can still be of help so far removed from my test date. Kudos to paying it forward!
Hope I can say the same thing in a few years!

😳

I saw someone above was asking about public health/quality/safety science questions; honestly, just read the FA section, pay attention to whatever UW has on the topic, and cross your fingers. I feel there's no really good way to prepare for these.

Hey guys, I wrote the Step I at the end of December, but figured I would post my experience in this thread since I didn't get my results until well into 2016 and figure the 2015 thread will probably die soon. My original goal was to score in the 230s. I had 6 weeks dedicated study time, and had already fully annotated first aid throughout the year with pathoma and some high yield stuff from other sources as well.

Resources:

Pathoma
First Aid
UWorld

USMLERx
Sketchy Micro
Kaplan physiology
Kaplan anatomy (neuroanatomy chapter only)

Study schedule:

First year: cover-to-cover Kaplan physiology
Second year: Pathoma and First Aid (first pass) throughout the year, fully annotated pathoma into FA. Kaplan neuroanatomy to coincide with my neurology unit for MS2. Sketchy micro and USMLERx questions throughout the year as well.
3 months out: Began second pass FA
6 weeks out: Third pass of first aid
4 weeks out: NBME 15 (222). This freaked me out a little bit, but I hadn't even touched UWorld yet, so I knew I could bring the score up a lot.
4 weeks out: Started UWorld and really buckled down hard with the studying after getting a 222 on the NBME. 3 blocks of UWorld per day plus full review of questions (took about 18 days of 10-12 hours of study time per day, 7 days per week, to finish first pass). Total UWorld score 73% cumulative random timed. First 15 blocks = 68%, Last 15 blocks = 77%. At this point I knew I should at least get 230s which was a bit of a relief, started setting my sights on potential 240s.
11 days out: Few days reviewing weak subjects from UWorld
7 days out: UWSA1 = 248
Final week: More review of weak subjects, spent at least 3 full days in this week just memorizing biochem pathways and enzymes, also did a second pass of all UWorld epi/biostats questions only
3 days out: UWSA2 = 252
2 days out: Free 132 = 92% (At this point I thought I might even have a shot at 250s)
Final day: light review of first aid minutia tables

Exam experience:

Found myself a bit nervous on test day. I am a slow test taker so nearly every block came down to the wire for time. Usually finished with less than 2 minutes to spare, so little time for review. Ended up marking ~15 questions per block which was freaking me out too. My strongest subjects in UWorld were immunology, micro, and behavioral science/ethics so I was hoping for a lot of these questions on the real deal. Literally had every single piece of minutiae on every bug in first aid memorized. Of course there were barely any questions from these areas at all. Less than 10 micro questions total and they were all super straight forward, maybe 5 behavioral science questions total. The immuno questions on the real deal completely wrecked me for some reason though, and this actually ended up being my WEAKEST subject area on the real deal once I saw my score report, despite it being my strongest on UWorld (93rd percentile for UWorld in immuno, yet actually dipped below the pass line in immuno on the real deal, heh). My exam was really heavy on obs/gyn questions (Easily 20+ questions) which is one of my weakest areas relatively speaking so I was pretty upset about this. Also a lot of endocrine which was ok since I love arrow questions. I felt the last few days I had spent cramming biochem pathway minutiae was largely for nothing, there were a total of 3 biochem pathway questions on the entire exam. Overall I was a little disappointed with the question distribution since most of my strong areas were grazed over or they seemingly asked wild unconventional questions despite it being a strong category for me (immuno), and my weakest subject was one of the heavily focused on areas. What can you do though, luck of the draw I guess. Coming out of the exam I had no clue how I did. I marked so many questions, had little time to review the marked questions, subject distribution was unfavorable for me, I thought I could have gotten as low as 220 on the real thing. I am aware that most people are a bit unsure and paranoid after test day too, so I didn't freak out too much and just tried to enjoy some break time while waiting for my score report.

Finally got the score report back last week and scored a 242. I am generally content with this score. After scoring 250 on the UWSAs and 92% on free 132 (I noticed most others with a score this high on the free 132 were scoring at least 250+ on real deal), I was secretly hoping to somehow get a 250+ on the real deal as well, but I knew that a lot of people had said UWSA tends to overpredict, and the luck factor just was not on my side on test day either. I felt that the questions in the free 132 were actually FAR more straight forward than the real deal and not a good reflection of the exam at all. Going in, I was under the impression that these questions were actually supposed to be the most reflective of the real exam so I really started getting my hopes up after crushing the 132. The level of uncertainty/ambiguity I felt in the real deal questions was more in line with UWSA exams imho, I can't comment on NBMEs because I only wrote one and was relatively early on in my prep. Bottom line is that considering my original goal was 230s I am content with my score despite knowing I certainly was capable of scoring a bit higher on test day. Good luck to everyone writing in 2016!

posted on this thread a while a go. Decided to change my date from mid Jan to the Monday coming up (1st Feb). Been on rotations + studying (had 3 weeks dedicated during Dec). Took my first NBME (11) on Nov 15th and it was 222. Thought I plateaud by early Jan at 240ish and having hit my weaknesses and scored 260 on NBME 16 and 256 on NBME 15 today. Hopefully the extra hard work pays off on Monday.

Just a msg for everyone to keep working hard and the NBME scores will go up. good luck to everyone taking the exam soon. I'll post on how it goes after!

~260+ on the three NBMEs that I have taken so far. Taking the exam in March. I'm going to be taking UWSA 1 and 2 sometime in the next 2-3 weeks. I don't think I'll have time to review every question. Would it be sufficient to review merely the questions that I get wrong? Is the information in these explanations found elsewhere in the QBank?

Most are pretty much the same concepts tbh. If you understand the full qbank you should get 265. I guess that's why it over predicts heavily

Anyone who's done step 1: most exam experiences I've read mention the difficulty of Immunology in the real step. Without mentioning what the questions are obviously, what type of concepts do they test? Are they not in first aid?

The concepts are in FA. You really need to understand them in order to answer the questions correctly since these really test whether you can apply the knowledge to different scenarios.

How many full-length exams are recommended before the real deal? I was planning to do the 2 UWSAs and some of the NBMEs, but I wasn't sure how many I should take. Any suggestions on how many and how to space them out prior to the exam?

I was going to take as many as possible without becoming homeless

I think people are too much scared about their experience nowadays
