Has anyone who has gotten their score back recently comment on how they did on UWSA1? I've heard it over predicts but that they adjusted it recently and I don't know what to believe.

I'm about 3 weeks out from Step. Just took UWSA1 yesterday and got a 212. How accurate/prognostic is it? Goal is 230-240. Possible in 3 weeks or should I postpone?

I'm only around 20% done with UWorld so far, it's just taking me super long to read through the explanations and annotate it into First Aid. 🙁

I just took STEP 1 two days ago, and I feel the same way as you post-test. I felt like it was pretty difficult. I would say there are 10-12 questions off of the top of my head that I know I missed. I had similar numbers on the NBMEs/UW as you going into the exam. Just wondering about you saying that you felt like you did awful... what was making you think that way? Cause I feel the same way and its because I feel like I made some dumb mistakes on about 10 questions. How many questions do you think you missed? And how did you deal with the waiting time until you got your score. Its killing me....

Thanks! Is it worth going through all the UWSA explanations or do you think they overlap with the questions in the UWorld Qbank enough? Just trying to maximize my efficiency here.

Officially 9 days until exam day - Need help with scheduling NBME 18 though. I take the practice test at the center this upcoming Wednesday and my exam is the following Monday. My goal has been a 240 but idk if I'm going to be able to hit that :/. So far:
CBSSE (school): 195 (4 wks ago), NBME 13: 209 (2 wks ago on a Monday), NBME 12: 209 (2 wks ago on a Friday), UWSA 1: 217 (1 wk ago on that Monday), NBME 15: 226 (1 week ago on that Friday), NBME 16: 216 (this past Monday), NBME 17: 237 (today).

Pretty much I realized the reason I was missing questions was that I just hadn't reviewed some of the information in First Aid since I had my classes which were ~10 months ago - so I stopped UWORLD and did half of First Aid these past 3 days and finally saw my score increase. Planning on doing the other half of first aid over the next 2-3 days. If my practice exam is on this upcoming Wednesday, when should I do NBME 18? I also have UWORLD 2 to take but don't have to take it I guess.

If you're the type of person who would be discouraged by a lower than usual NBME score just a few days from your exam, then I would suggest taking NBME 18 before your Prometric practice exam. If you don't think your performance on NBME 18 would affect your mindset or performance on test day, then I would suggest taking it after your Prometric practice exam. I've read from multiple sources that NBME 18 is definitely one of the tougher ones so that's something to keep in mind. As for UWSA 2, I'm not really sure when you would have a chance to take it and also review your mistakes if you're planning on finishing FA as well. Another thing to consider is that one group of thought is to stop all UWorld questions one week prior to the exam since it can make you overthink questions on the real deal (as Step 1 questions apparently don't try to trick you like UWorld questions might). Of course, there are also plenty of people who finish UWorld just a few days out from Step 1 so this isn't necessarily a rule that applies to everyone.

Thanks- yeah I'm thinking I'll finish first aid this upcoming Monday maybe Tuesday at the latest. I have 1/3 of uworld left and was thinking about just doing the 70 anatomy questions I had left prior to step 1. I'm honestly not sure how it would affect me re:nbme 18. Like I know I was disappointed in 16 when I took it but I forgot about it while I was taking 17 lol.

Doing the rest of the UWorld Anatomy questions should be fine since Anatomy questions aren't usually designed to be tricky, but instead simply fact recall. You could probably review bugs and drugs (if you don't already have them down) the last few days as well for a good return on your time investment. As for NBME 18, I haven't taken it or Step 1 yet myself so I can't provide personal insight into how it may or may not affect your mindset for the real deal. Hopefully, that's something someone else can chime in on.

Thanks to some of you who has kept hope alive for me through this painful process! Got my score finally..

Total 5.5 weeks of dedicated study time with goal of 240.

Resources: UWorld, FA, pathoma, sketchy

Baseline NBME 12: 220
NBME 15 4.5 weeks out 227
NBME 16 3 weeks out 248
Free 138 2 weeks out 88-90% (equates to like 242 or something)
NBME 17 1 week out: 232 (huge drop scared the **** out of me lol)

Real deal: 259

Test day: went by much faster than I anticipated! Had multiple energy drinks to keep me going. I marked maybe 50-70% of every block, but never had enough time to go back and double checked any of my answers (which indicates to me that gut answers are definitely the best answers, and is likely the explanation for my score drop on NBME 17). This test was harder than anything I've ever seen! It was MOST similar to NBME 16 but still much harder. There was about 10% of material I haven't seen before and it was a lot of pure guessing. Maybe 15% of it was easy give a way questions and the rest were really ambiguous. I walked out feeling like I failed (no joke) and over the next few weeks I figured okay maybe I didn't fail but definitely got <220, so I was prepared for the worst! When I saw my score I literally cried with happiness and disbelief.

I know this isn't the best written experience so if any of you have questions, please ask away!! I'm so blessed and thankful for my score, and I hope you guys reach your goals and even Higher 🙂

Congratulations on your score, what do you think contributed to your huge score jump going from NMBE 15 to 16? 21 point increase in less than 2 weeks is amazing.

Hmm I'm not too sure to be honest, but speaking solely from what I studied, I finished up u world for the first round (spent a lot of time reading every little answers and even writing notes which I never read again), finished up all of physio (from BRS and FA) and did all the path (from pathoma & FA). I think reading through brs physio along with pathoma was a huge help in terms of learning all the information. Also I was getting better at reading questions & extrapolating important Info from vignettes and just trusting my gut!

@MDreamaker Do you think you would have used any other resource to answer the harder questions you guessed on? Or would you still stick to the high yield sources? Coz it feels like a lot of luck is involved in deciding wether you fall + or - 5 of your target score near a 250

In retrospect, I wouldn't have used any other resources, but maybe spent more time during the year doing u world and FA, b/c I didn't touch FA until my dedicated study time and I felt like I could've gone thru FA at least 2 more times. I think I did get blessed/lucky with the test that I got and the stars aligned for me. Also, I spoke to one of my professors about this "guessing game" and they told me that though we may feel like we are guessing blindly, the guessing is most often due to some residue baseline knowledge we have on the subject matter that then leads us to this "educated guess".
Few of my friends used in my opinion too many resources and it didn't go as well for them (but that's a subjective matter). I know I work better with less resources as long as I focused on those topics and know them really well!

Congratulations 🙂 could u elaborate a little on how you studied uw, fa, pathoma and sketch in those 5.5 weeks? Also did u take the UWSA? what was you uw avg?

So I basically had a total of almost 40 days of dedicated study time. I spent time thru out the year and the month prior finishing up my first round of uworld which I got around 55-60% average. The second round of UW I was getting about 85-90%. For those 40 days, I divided the days up into topics. Like 2-3 days reading all phys, pathoma+FA path in around 6 days (I divided total hours of pathoma by 6 days, and FA pages only on path by 6 days), and sketchy I did in 3 days along with micro from FA.

I didn't do UWSA, only NBMEs and I felt like that was sufficient. I honestly didn't have more time to utilize other resources and take other assessments! Hope that helped, good luck 🙂

Hey congrats on the score! Hard work pays off.

I took step about 5 days ago and was just wondering your post-test feelings. How did you think you did after the exam? I thought I was over prepared going in and studied for months for that test. But I just feel like I have no idea how I did and don't have a great feeling about it.

I am waiting for my score currently and from my experience, it should definitely be done. Most definitely. Similar questions on the real deal. Just don't take the score to your heart.

what if I take it just 2 days before the real exam. as I have a lot of things to be revised and merely doing questions that will end up giving me depression only and nothing else.

Obviously it is your call to make since only you know what is best for you. But going over the exam a couple of hours after taking it might prove very beneficial, just my advice.

Random but the testing site I'm taking my practice step 1 at in 2 days just called me and told me to get there at 7:15 instead of 8am because they had a lot of people checking in that day for the sat and act also.... I was like ok thanks for letting me know which is more important to y'all lol. Granted mine is a practice exam but still.

what's the opinion on the predictability of UWSA1? I heard they modified the curve but I'm not sure.

I just took it as a gauge before dedicated starts and would like to know if its even a score I should pay attention to. Thanks guys.

Used First Aid, Pathoma, and Goljan RR. 95% of the exam is in those sources, just work hard and put in the hours.

No Derm or Plastics for you. We will get over our disappointment.

I don't have to do this for 2 years, but it is freaking me out already. My brother just took Step 1 on April 15. He thought it was hard, but we will see what he scores (he mentioned getting a 250 on some "pre-test"). He is not gunning for competitive specialty, probably pathology, so he wasn't stressed about it, actually went kayaking over the weekends during study period. His M2 girlfriend wants a high powered residency, and she was a mess a couple of weeks before the test. Sounds like this whole thing is a mind game (not unlike the MCAT). I'm regretting looking at this forum already. BYE BYE

Yup, and the average MCAT for matriculating MD students is 31 under the old scale.
I don't think anyone likes the "averages", as like Lake Woebegone, we are all "above average".

Which is good and well but he didn't do average for derm, he did a full 10 points higher than the average for derm

I've been lurking on this thread for a while now while preparing for the exam, and as much as it scared the s*** out of me to read some of your experiences, it was helpful to know we're all in this together. So I figured I would post now that I've taken the beast.
My exam was yesterday 4/25. I prepped for 6 weeks, but didn't have a structured schedule....I tried, but I just couldn't be that disciplined.
I watched most of DIT, used FA, UWorld, Pathoma, Sketchy (just the micro part), and some picmonic for the glycogen storage diseases (there was no way I could keep these straight otherwise!)

NBME's were all over the place:
- exam that the school gave us prior to dedicated: 192
- NBME 15: 222 (4 weeks out)
- NBME 16: 222 (3 weeks out...no improvement freaked me out!)
- NBME 17: 251 (2 weeks out)
- NBME 18: 237 (1 week out....I was very disappointed with this drop)
UWorld cumulative average with 80% completion: 72% with the last 20 or so sections were between 75-86%

I felt ok during the exam. I was prepared for the worst, and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It felt a lot like UWorld, in both difficulty and the length of question stems. I have no idea how I did, but I've been actively trying not to think of any questions that might have screwed up.
I took a break after the first 3 sections, and then another after the next two. In hindsight, I should have taken a break before the last block, because that's when my mental exhaustion really hit me hard. All in all, I'm just glad it's over!

I've been lurking on this thread for a while now while preparing for the exam, and as much as it scared the s*** out of me to read some of your experiences, it was helpful to know we're all in this together. So I figured I would post now that I've taken the beast.
My exam was yesterday 4/25. I prepped for 6 weeks, but didn't have a structured schedule....I tried, but I just couldn't be that disciplined.
I watched most of DIT, used FA, UWorld, Pathoma, Sketchy (just the micro part), and some picmonic for the glycogen storage diseases (there was no way I could keep these straight otherwise!)

NBME's were all over the place:
- exam that the school gave us prior to dedicated: 192
- NBME 15: 222 (4 weeks out)
- NBME 16: 222 (3 weeks out...no improvement freaked me out!)
- NBME 17: 251 (2 weeks out)
- NBME 18: 237 (1 week out....I was very disappointed with this drop)
UWorld cumulative average with 80% completion: 72% with the last 20 or so sections were between 75-86%

I felt ok during the exam. I was prepared for the worst, and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It felt a lot like UWorld, in both difficulty and the length of question stems. I have no idea how I did, but I've been actively trying not to think of any questions that might have screwed up.
I took a break after the first 3 sections, and then another after the next two. In hindsight, I should have taken a break before the last block, because that's when my mental exhaustion really hit me hard. All in all, I'm just glad it's over!

I essentially score the same as you on the exam given by my school. I am about 5.5 weeks out from my exam. What was your strategy from 192 --> 222. I am working on my weaknesses first. I take an NBME this Saturday to see if anything improved or if I should go get a law degree instead lol.

You haven't even started first year yet. Relax for right now. During first year, do well in your classes and don't study for step. Enjoy your summer between 1st and 2nd year, and don't study for step. Start thinking about step when 2nd year starts, but don't do anything specifically for step until about 6 months out because you'll just forget everything otherwise. Do well in your classes and it'll carry over to step.

I'll echo other sentiments, do as well as you can in your classes first year and do research in your M1 summer. In second year begin to follow with first aid and annotate the book as you go along. This first pass will get you familiar with the book which is a big step for people who pick it up for the first time in dedicated. I would caution you in starting Uworld early because it integrates information you dont have yet. If you must use it it shouldn't be started until at least the second half of second year IMO. I did a few sections and will likely get a reset before dedicated starts next week but held back because I want it to be my focus for studying.

so thanks to everyone for their kind words and guidance. Overall id say it was fair. Its really bittersweet when i think about it. Ive had a huge issue with comprehension my entire life, and despite being told i would never amount to anything. I had a problem with reading comprehension since i was a child and when it boils down to it that what this exam is ALL ABOUT.

my personal advice to anyone studying for this who isnt starting out at a passing score, take a deep breath and get ready to really buckle down. it all really boils down to how well you understand the concepts. i struggled for years with conceptual learning and finally when things started to click it was too late. it hurts really really hurts being so close yet so far. really going to miss medicine, going to miss my classmates, going to miss it all. thanks for everything guys ill be back in a month with my scores. dont want to divuldge anything about the exam and risk ruining the minute chance i passed.

I am glad it's over.
I have to admit that what you did took lots of guts & was very admirable whatever may be the result.
However, this forum is replete with posts that they failed only to say otherwise 3 weeks later.

Hey guys, how much time do you spend on reading first aid. I am about to head into my dedicated and was wondering how long it takes to finish a pass of first aid. Reading first aid during the year was a very slow process for me. I read all the organ system sections once and did 80% of RX by organ system.
