I know this is quite early but most American Students have finished giving the test for this year.
I am an IMG and have been prepping for the steps since quite some time and have seen Phloston, Transposony's and others' threads for their respective years and how helpful they have been.

I intend on giving step in Jan.. let's share timetables, plans and other stuff on how everyone intends on taking on this beast.

P.S. : I think it is not that early.. the 2015/2016 threads were started in September/October.. but in true SDN gunner style..i wanna start it in August.. 🙂

COMSAE D? That's a very nice score being so far out. Congrats.

I'm also DO. Just took UWSA1. Saving my first NBME until about 5-6 weeks to go (today starts dedicated and I'm 9 weeks out). Did you purchase the UWSA's? It gives a pretty nice breakdown and could be useful for identifying your weaknesses.

Odd question but what comsae is worth taking ?

How useful is DIT course?

No idea. I hope it's useful! I used some of their "primer" videos and I liked them. I don't think I could just sit down and read FA, especially not my first pass. That's the majority of the reason I got DIT. I plan on finishing fairly quickly and moving onto UWorld, Pathoma, Sketchy.

Here's my two cents:

Started studying 3 months out, tested in mid-February
Completed UWorld, Pathoma, and read FA approx 6 times
NBME 13 (3 months out): 221
NBME 15 (2 months out): 215
NBME 16 (1.5 months out): 238
UWorld Self Assessment 1 (1 month out): 256
UWorld Self Assessment 2 (2 weeks out): 251

USMLE Step 1: 240

My theory is that the NBME is resetting the average now that the exam is substantially shorter. I suspect the average will be much lower than years past. My score report only showed the average for 2015-2016. We'll see...

the link for printing schedule permit is not available anymore ... this means I'll have my score tomorrow , my heart is beating so fast right now

Can you explain what you mean by "resetting the average," and how this would be done from a practical standpoint?

Does anyone know if NBME questions are weighted? Took NBME 13 and got a 196 10 weeks out from my exam. Really slacking on behavioral sciences and Biostats. I plan on studying it during my dedicated since I forget it so quickly. Just trying to get a sense of whether a 245 is a realistic goal. FWIW.. hadn't studied GI, repro, MSK, Neuro, CV, biochem.

What is/was your strategy for using Uworld? 1 or 2 passes/reading and highlighting explanations/ take little or extensive notes? Did you use another Qbank?

its doable, if thats your baseline , its a start to show you where you are weak at

That's most definitely doable.

NBMEs are pretty unforgiving and have such steep curves due to their questions being much easier than UW. A 196 without having studied half the organ systems is fine -- freak out a little over it and let it fuel your studying. Cover those subjects and take another one.
My first NBME was around the same as yours and I hadn't covered about half the material either. After 2 weeks of hitting those areas, I took another NBME and jumped up 35+ points.

hi all - anyone have a discrepancy between UW and NBMEs? I'm hitting 80-90s on UW consistently and just took UWSA1 and ended up with a 275. Felt good then took NBME19 a few days later and hit a 246 [not a bad score at all, but just a huge discrepancy]. made like 4-5 really dumb mistakes but the rest I honestly just didn't even know how to answer. Anyone else feel like NMBE19 scale is weird?

Was the real deal similar to NBME19 or UWSAs? Any advice for the last 12 days of prep? Was hoping for 260+ but after my NBME that doesn't seem as realistic anymore.

275?!?!??!?

Don't worry about NBME 19. Everyone I know of has reported that their score on it has been lower than their actual score. Think of it as a worst-case scenario. Which is my best-case scenario. So don't fret!

I think you should take one of the older NBMEs (16-18) to get a better idea, the curve on 19 can make it fairly inaccurate for some people I think.

Damn would have been cool if it was midnight. Having problems sleeping. Oh well, I guess I'll try again

Haha. Agreed. I went on the site and saw that I could now order a transcript. At this rate, I could probably get a copy before the electronic release. 😛

I guess I could read some journal articles while I'm up. Clear off my plate for the necessary post-score imbibing.

Dang it. I was semi hoping I would get my score back tomorrow (took it Saturday, March 18), few of my classmates that took the exam back in February got their scores back 3rd Wednesday regardless of what day of the week they took the exam. Sigh. Fingers crossed for those getting their scores back in a few hours!

PS I have also heard that you get an email around 9:50 am MST and that scores are loaded shortly there after.

Thanks ChemNerd07. Could use all the luck I can get! Every morning I wake up and remember another damn question I got wrong. 🙁

Was the ability to order a transcript not available to you? Others have mentioned the disappearance of the link to print your permit as a signal of an upcoming score release but my scheduling period expired 3/31 so the link was already gone.

Yeah everything is still up and I have an error when I click on the 'order a transcript.'

Lmao I've been doing the same thing for weeks. Or I'll be at a lecture and someone will say something and I'll just be like $*&#!!!!! Then again, I've got some serious post test amnesia. I just tell myself you can miss 84 and still get 70% correct

Lol should have pretensed that with: I am not a gunner and do not expect some crazy score. Definitely representing the lurking population right now lol.

Haha. You're in good company because neither am I. 230 +/- 5 and I'd be over the moon. I am between EM and IM. (And maybe Gen Surg)

Ah, seems it's next Wednesday for you. If I click RECORDS, I can now see "New Document Order". Most certainly wasn't there this morning.

I would love to have another week of bliss but honestly, it's been hell. After the exam, I recalled 28 things I was certain I got wrong. Then every other day, another would pop into my mind. I'd add an Ethics question. Or a weird Endocrine problem with too many arrows and a column I never heard of. Or some pregnant woman with something I clearly hadn't studied.

Taking the exam gave me a sense of peace. Waiting for the score has been giving me round the clock anxiety.

I hope you score well, I recently came out of the exam and can also recall around that many mistakes on things I should have gotten right without a problem. I'm usually doing something during the day and all these questions pop into my mind and I'm also like... !@#$!! The strange thing is that I feel if I got those same questions in uworld I would most certainly get them correct 🙁 Good luck!

I totally misspoke earlier. I think everyone got their scores at 9 am MST. Oops.

Yeah I recently fell in love with surgery and realized I'm a hands on person. Fml. I'm hoping that changes next year through rotations, I've heard horror stories about gen surg residency :-/

Hello all!

Long time creeper of SDN and finally decided to sign up because I felt obligated to post this. Background history: I am an IMG and recently took Step 1 after a 10 week dedicated period of studying and received my score last Wednesday. I was a slightly above average student overall but started medical school a little rocky. I almost failed my first exam of first semester. After much improvement, I ended second year near the top of my class.

After all the help and advice that everyone (including SDN) gave, I was thankful but also frustrated because no one really shared their exact study plan for their dedicated (they probably just didn't have one). I was always told UFAP, sketchy, etc. and I would be thinking (when? in what order? how much per day? how close to your exam?) I ended up documenting a day by day study plan of what I did for the 8 weeks from eyes open until eyes closed (mostly because I wanted to be able to look back and see what I did from the previous week, but now I thought that maybe someone would find it useful).

I ended up taking all of the online NBMEs and was scoring in the low 230s; however, contrary to popular belief, I felt and still feel that NBMEs aren't a completely accurate gauge of what you will score on test day. I ended up scoring >20 points above my NBME average. Strangely enough, USWAs were by far the most predictive.

My scores for each practice exam are as follows:
NBME 12 (8w out): 212
UWSA 1 (4w out): 245
NBME 15 (2w out): 230
NBME 18 (2w out): 232
NBME 3 (1w out): ~227
NBME 5 (1w out): ~230
UWSA 2 (1w out): 243
NBME 16 (4d out): 232
NBME 17 (3d out): 227
NBME 13 (2d out): 230

Actual: 248

As you can see, NBMEs weren't really predictive at all for me. I always believed that it didn't matter what scores you were getting on practice exams because it all comes down to which test they administer to you on exam day. Attached is my 10w study plan. It will be confusing when you look at it at first so I am happy to answer any questions. Before I began my dedicated I had already made it through UWorld once before our school's comprehensive exam. I felt this was CRITICAL to freeing up time, letting me add in Kaplan, and allowing for a quicker second/third pass of UWorld. Quick rundown of what I did every day for 10w:

730am-noon: Read a section of first aid. (24p immuno FA, etc). I took my time for this and wanted to grab all the little details that I missed the first time through because I heard that they loved the little FA details on step, and they did.

Noon-1pm: Lunch while watching one video of DIT (bottom line of the schedule, if it says "micro 25-29", I watched DIT micro 25 at lunch while eating). It's amazing how much we can accomplish in the time that is usually wasted.

1pm-9pm: 5 blocks of UWorld random/timed or 5 blocks of Kaplan (depending on the week, it's in the schedule). I'd also sneak in some dinner sometime around 5pm. Hungry=brain shuts down.

9pm-10pm: Gym. I went 4-5x a week and I felt this was absolutely critical for doing well. Sound body = sound mind.

1030pm-1130pm: 4 videos of DIT on 2x while laying in bed. Once again, time that was previously wasted was now being used to run through a pretty decent review.

1130pm-7am: Sleep.

I only used DIT during the times I usually wouldn't be doing anything- lunch and winding down before bed. I began substituting DIT in for Netflix during 2nd year. Just by doing this, I made 3 passes of DIT. I think it helped tremendously. Some people are indifferent to those guys, but hey, it's not like I sacrificed studying another resource to do it.

UWorld is obviously king. Know it cold before moving onto less reputable banks.

I did Kaplan and it was good IMO. Some people may say "Kaplan is so low yield, knit-picky, etc" but my reply would be "how do you know? Have you seen all the Step1 questions?". On test day Kaplan ended up earning me at least 5 points I can think of which I probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

SKETCHY FTW. I loved sketchy and know every picture like the back of my hand. I started using it beginning second year and can honestly say i'll remember those pictures forever. Those stories are gold and those guys are geniuses. *applauds*

Last but not least- I firmly believe optimism is absolutely necessary to do well on Step 1. Envision the score you want and work towards it every day. A lot of you are probably thinking "this guy got lucky" and you are 100% correct; however, not for a single second did I ever believe I would score less than a 245, even after practice tests where I would get a 227. Truly believe in yourself and it will happen. I guarantee it.

I went to bed each night knowing I gave it my all and there was nothing else I could have done. This also gave me peace on test day and the confidence in my preparation. This was key.

I'll say it again- believe in yourself and give it your all. It's a short period of sacrifice to achieve everything you've every wanted. Leave it all out there.

I probably won't be logging on too much but hopefully at least one person finds my schedule helpful. If you have any questions i'll try to answer them but it may take a little bit. Please be patient with me. lol

Good luck,
Reticuloman
Congrats on the great score! Quick question -- how did you use UW? Doing 5 blocks/day in 7-8 hours is incredibly fast. Did you just read the explanations? Just your incorrects? Did you annotate?

228. Perfect to me!

I'm the opposite. In UWorld, the ones 78% of students got right were the ones I got wrong and the ones 28% got right were the ones I seemed to know. On my test, those were probably the experimental ones. :-/

I'm sure you did swimmingly. Good luck!
