I know this is quite early but most American Students have finished giving the test for this year.
I am an IMG and have been prepping for the steps since quite some time and have seen Phloston, Transposony's and others' threads for their respective years and how helpful they have been.

I intend on giving step in Jan.. let's share timetables, plans and other stuff on how everyone intends on taking on this beast.

P.S. : I think it is not that early.. the 2015/2016 threads were started in September/October.. but in true SDN gunner style..i wanna start it in August.. 🙂

@Ace Khalifa Can you do a more active review of material in the afternoon evening? I think we've talked about this before about just reading FA not quite working for us, ya know?
I review my anki cards of my UW mistakes before bed. Current plan is still 3 blocks of UW first, then content review with B&B + FA (and/or Pathoma, sketchy, BRS physio) in the late afternoon and evening. It makes for very long days, but I have to cover everything in less than 5 weeks.

Did you take all of the NBMEs? Also how did you review them to find the correct answers. Did you buy the extended feedback or get the offline ones to review. Thanks again and congrats once again.

I took all but 13 - I took 12 early on (which is no longer available) and it wasn't a good representative of the exam so I wanted to stick to newer ones. I got the extended feedback so I could go through my incorrects. It can take some digging to find correct answers in blogs/resources but it is worth it if you have the time and you wont forget it after reading explanations or thought process of other students.

After taking UWSA, it really makes you realize how little of what we are supposed to know can be on those 280 questions on the real exam

What's up guys.. So a question for all you slow test takers out there. On UWorld and the one NBME exam that I have taken, I usually take the entire time to answer all of the questions in the block. I have always been a slower test taker so I'm not exactly sure how to combat this. Did you guys feel that this was a problem on test day? I keep reading on here how people are having a tough time finishing sections on test day and it makes me nervous since I am barely finishing (usually a minute or two left over) on practice blocks. Thanks!

I remember we'd talked about doing bros earlier. I ended up dumping that and started using a different deck for content review. Lets see how it plays out. I haven't done questions in 2 weeks... It's making me anxious!

I think we're in a similar boat. We both scored about the same on our last practice exam and have a month left. Letsss do eeetttt!

Well, why are you having issues with time? I have this issue as well and narrowed it down to content. It was taking me too long to rule out answers and I wasn't 100% confident in an answer even if it turned out to be right. That was causing a lot of wasted time just going in circles over thing.

Thanks for the encouragement! I just see that people take the average of their NBME's to predict and putting 215 and 225 into an average makes it real hard to round out to a 240+.

I'm hoping to just continue to improve 5 points a week. I know for a fact that my weakness at the moment is fact memorization, so the name of the game is multiple passes for me. I'm a concept guy so we'll see how this goes.

I think when people take the average of their nbmes it's usually the last 3 or so not long before the test. If you take your baseline and early nbmes it will definitely under predict. I wouldn't worry about first few nbmes especially when you're clearly improving.

That's a good question. I think I'm similar in that its a mix of not having complete mastery of content and not being able to pick an answer and move on. I tend to think about things more than I should plus I think I am a slower reader unfortunately. Anyways I was just wondering if anybody on here who tends to be a slower test taker had extreme difficulties with the real exam or if their timing was similar to their practice blocks.

I'm a slow test taker and I get anxiety and end up reading even easy questions over again for no real reason lol. I usually end up using up all my time but still able to finish the questions. The same thing happened the day of the exam. In my experience if you can make it through UWSA2 in time you can make it through the real deal in time. I found it got easier too after the first block real deal and I got into the groove a bit.

I keep asking about this, but are UWSA accurate predictors? Took two and scores were higher than any of my NBMEs. Not sure if it's the result of studying or just a more lenient curve.

Getting results next week. Did anyone make some ******* mistakes on your test and still do well? Can count up to 10-12 questions I'm sure I missed that weren't too hard but just pressure of exam day maybe I goofed up.

My test was very fair, kind of a mix of UW and NBMEs...not as hard as everyone else's was and don't think I had many experimental questions. Anyone else feel this way and still do well? Goal is 250+...but honestly have no idea what to expect.

Hi!

When did you take the exam?
I took it on Tuesday, the 18th and I'm not sure when I should expect scores.

I felt it was fairly okay as well. I had some weird questions but also a lot of regular ones. I counted 22 mistakes already and it scared the **** out of me :/
I'm sure the questions I don't remember where the ones that I answered quickly and this is why I don't remember them.

I don't even dream bout 250 lol I hope I can get a decent pass... How many questions did you recall?

Hey! I wrote on the 21st. I think we both get results this Wednesday. I counted about 20 mistakes too and I had been doing decent on nbmes before. I'm hoping for a decent score as well, I don't need a 250+ or whatnot lol.

Thank you this is is exactly what I was looking for! That's comforting to hear that it wasn't too much different from normal on test day. I also agree about the first block being the slowest. When I'm doing UWorld my first quarter of the block is always my slowest. I don't know if its just that my brain needs warmed up or what lol. Is UWSA2 much different than UWSA1? I've already taken that and wasn't too terrible with time (finished with usually like a minute left).

I'm glad I was helpful! UWSA1 and UWSA2 felt the same to me and I scored about the same percent but the curve for UWSA2 was a bit tougher. I think that's the only difference. One good thing about actual step being long is there are plenty of blocks so even if block one is a bit shaky getting warmed up it doesn't matter as much.

Yes! I think this Wednesday is going to be THE DAY.
Oh, my... I want this nightmare to be over. I recalled a lot of questions, like 230 or something but honestly, at least 20 or more of them are so unusual that I can't even check the answers (plus, recalling what the questions was more or less about and the actual question are 2 different things 🙂 ).

It is annoying, isn't it? Knowing already that you made so many mistakes without remembering many questions 😛)

Yeah, you will be more than fine. Your NBMEs were stellar so there is almost no chance for you to score low 😉

Let's hope for the best!

Can a physician accept a dinner gratitude from a patient if the vignette does not imply that the patient is looking to pursue a relationship? I put an answer saying you can accept a gift as long as you don't do it at the patient house

I'm not sure, honestly. I think he shouldn't.
I would turn down everything other than little things, like postcards, flowers etc.
I'm not sure tho.

I had also a few questions like this. To me, ethics was very vague.

Aw thanks! I hope it goes well for the both of us too! 🙂

That's the most frustrating thing is I could only remember the tough questions I either got wrong or had to make a guess on and are too tricky to look up and find a solid answer. Now it's all a blur but at the time I think I could only remember a handful of gimme straight forward ones I could check and know 100% I got right.

It's driving me crazy I'll be happy when this is all over and the guessing or speculating can stop haha. I definitely feel your pain.

For those not feeling a particular romance with their first aid I can relate. Could've read it for hours without any recall so really I never tried. I looked at a few particular sections, tables, etc. as I worked my way through Uworld, but never did an actual pass through FA. Was worried this would affect my score because everyone seemed to be on their 3rd+ pass at the time I took my test. Ended up scoring a 254 which was pretty close to the average of my practice NBMEs and UWSAs. Just wanted to let those who don't jive with FA know not to force it too much if you don't feel it's working. I don't think it's a great resource for everyone and definitely not needed for a 240+ score. Do what works for you and good luck. (I also recognize some adore FA and it is a valuable resource for many)

Hey guys. I finished UWSA1 today. I've been having a rough time ratcheting my score upwards. I scored a 215 on UWSA1 today. I would honestly be okay with this score, though I would like to score a bit higher. I know that UWSA1 usually overpredicts, and I would like to know what you guys thing on the degree of overprediction this is and how much is real. I have just under two more weeks of prep to do. Trying to stay positive about the improvement, but time is running out and I'd like to see just a bit higher.

Me too getting my results coming wednesday.! Scared. Haha. Made some dumb mistakes. Incorrected the correct answers in overthinking. Pretty anxious about it. Lets just hope for the best though.! Good luck.!

UWSA tends to overpredict your score, however, let it be a confidence boost and keep on chugging!

Can not accept gifts from patients unless they hold very low monetary value (I think it's as low as $10). Think cards, cookies, etc. Not dinners, tickets, etc.

Can anybody who has taken the exam recently comment on how much "computing" was actually done on test day?

How many times did you have to pull up that calculator to determine PPV, loading dose, SVR, alveolar gas, etc.

I used it a couple times. A pharm equation, a hardy weinberg, and a biostats question

I had 4 questions requiring calculating.

I was told many times that UWSA used to overpredict and now it's more or less on point.
Also, these exams were pretty accurate for lower scores, such as 210-230 and had a tendency to overshoot for people who score higher (for example, if you are on the 245 level, they gave you 255-260).

A few months ago, I did UWSA and NBME and I had 226 on UWSA and 220/232 on NBME.

I was slow throughout all of my practices (frequently had less than a minute left at the end of blocks) and had a comparable amount of time left at the end of blocks during the real test. I didn't suddenly get faster, but I feel like if you already have a slow-and-steady approach to test taking you are also not likely to get way slower on the real thing. Just keep an eye on the clock and you'll be fine!

Is NBME 19 completely necessary to do?

I got a 243 on NBME 16, 234 on nbme 17, 250 on nbme 18. The thing is in all these exams I got between 87-90% correct. I heard NBME 19 the curve makes it so that like getting that percent would be like a 230. I really don't need that confidence bust.

I still think its worth the practice depending on how much time you have left. Its the most recent so odds are its probably close to the best representative of the exam. Now if you are really sacrificing something else then maybe not. NBME's are obviously limited as a learning tool. There was still topics that I felt like I knew but hadn't seen presented that way so I think thats always good practice. More efficient that just reading FA for me atleast. But yes the curve is rough...91% was a 242 for me. That said, if you know that going in you shouldn't let it bother you.

That was like me too percentage wise for each nbme after my first few/baselines. Got an 88 on nbme 19 and it gave me 232. It's always good practice but if it was the last assessment I had done it would have hurt my confidence. That being said a number of people do score the same as their other recent nbmes on it.

I'm biased but the questions on it to me seemed very left field and not like any of the other newer assessments or UWSA or free120 which I felt WAY better prepared me for step. It felt more to me like nbme 12 or 13.

Thats what confuses me, if im jumping back and forth 10-15 points on NBMES then how can it have good predictive value? Anyway my UWORLD percent is a 79% which I think correlates to a score in the 240s. Im just gonna skip it for now and maybe do the Uworld self assessments and just memorize like hell from here. Exam is in like 2 weeks.

I'm with several of you expecting scores this Wednesday. I've managed to distract myself, but I'm starting to really focus on it again. There's a range of about 30 points in which my score could fall and I wouldn't be too surprised. Don't know what to expect, but hoping for the best!

Ugh I know the feeling. I feel like i could get almost any score and I wouldn't be surprised (aside from the more extreme scores). I have moments of panic mixed in with feeling ok about it and I flip back and forth out of nowhere. Apparently most people stress the most about it right after writing and right before getting scores so that makes sense.

Good luck to you and the rest of us this Wednesday!

I felt the same way with my form. It seemed very left field and nothing like NBMEs. I should get my score back this Wednesday or the next. Good luck.

Yes!!! This is EXACTLY how I feel right now.
I do hope I get the score this week, though. I wrote the exam on Tuesday, so who the hell knows.
Is there a rule that Mon/Tue people get the score after 4 weeks?

Ahhh I feel ya!

I've heard rumors about how if you write on certain days you wait 4 weeks but as far as I know I'm very certain it's almost always the third Wednesday no matter what day of the week you write.

Do you guys count the first time pass % on UW post-redoing incorrect questions or not? Bc I redid a bunch of incorrect questions and it seemed to have sky-rocketted my percent correct total.

Joanna, you will be fine, I believe only 10 wrong questions can lead you scoring more than 260 in real exam. I counted much more and more wrong questions than you. I have no idea what to expect also. The sense is different in real exam vs doing nbme. I do believe that they really change the questions stem this year.

Just count the first pass on it's own without redoing incorrects but it honestly still doesn't tell you much compared to nbmes and other assessments.

Did you use anything outside of FA then? I get UWORLD is a great learning source and all but I still feel like FA is important to me to constantly refresh on material so I dont forget it on test day.

Of course, did pathoma throughout the year and did a second run-through during dedicated. Went through BRS physiology at the beginning of dedicated. I was also a huge sketchy fan. FA does have pretty much anything you could encounter on the test, but seeing it in bullet point format did little to increase my learning when I tried to use it. I felt that Uworld not only covers the majority of the important information listed in FA, but also got me to think about the information critically. FA might tell me that tay-sachs is a thing that exists, but I found I could know every bullet point listed in FA and still get a third+ order question about tay-sachs wrong. I only started step studying during dedicated (5 weeks) so I had to quickly decide what was the best use of my time and reading FA word for word, for me, wasn't worth the time required. I know some people swear by FA - I just wanted to let those that don't get that much use out of it to know not to stress. You can still do well without using it as a primary resource.

All the best for you. Wednesday will be an important day to all of us, for me it even means whether to continue or to retire. Spaceballs you have a great nbme and uwsa baseline 🙂.

It seems that many of us expecting result this Wednesday. I know many peoples including me are taking the test last week before 24th April to avoid pool questions changed, but unfortunately, they started to insert those annoying questions earlier little by little 🙁. I am so scared, mixed feelings, but kind of pessimistic.

not jiving with first aid and I'm totally in the same boat man. I for the life of me cannot absorb anything from that book. At the same time my knowledge is pretty weak since I'm getting 40% average on uworld questions, doing 40 random timed blocks at a time. Do you any advice on what I should do? Should I just make a first pass at uworld and worry about retaining info then using my second pass as a real assessment of my knowledge? As opposed to first aid I actually enjoy doing 40 questions in uworld, but like i said my knowledge base is really weak and was wondering if it would be better to do some sort of video review series etc. before fully diving into uworld. let me know what you think. any advice is appreciated! thanks in advance!!
