Official 2018-2019 Cardiology Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You’ll be fine.

I am having a major, major, major freakout.
I am a non-traditional applicant and already concerned about not matching generally.
I applied on July 14th.
On July 16th, a mentor made some minor tweaks on my PS and I made those tweaks and "updated" my PS- figuring if a program hadn't downloaded my application yet, they would just see the new one.
On July 20th, I caught a tiny typo and fixed that and again "updated" my PS.

Now I am wondering - will the program see all three versions? Will they see what edits I made? Will they think I'm a ***** / bad applicant because I revised my PS? OMG. I am about ready to cry. The tweaks weren't even necessary (rephrasing a few sentences).

Can @aProgDirector or @gutonc or any of you wonderful knowledgeable people help me? I feel absolutely sick to my stomach.

Hi I am IMG applicant with low USMLE scores but 1 year research from big name cardiology university. Original residency was from community program. In this one year I have had research published with my name as 4-5th author in JACC x1 and JACC intervention x4 papers, first author meta-analysis in CDT, book chapter, reviewer-ship in annals. few awards and several abstracts in TCT and AHA

I have mostly applied to smaller program. What are my chances?/ Any particular programs to look for??

USMLE scores and residency aren't super helpful. However, the research fellowship (especially with that many publications - pretty impressive for one year!) seems like it will be VERY helpful. Probably have a pretty good shot. At this point wherever you can apply is probably helpful.

This is the least thing you should be worried about. I do not know how things will show up on their side, but PS is literately the least thing Cards PD cared about (I even saw one Cards PD specially mentioned it). And I highly doubt they will waste their time reading PS for the sending interview process, given the volume of applications received

I am an IMG., Rresidency in 2012 from community program
Hospitalist for 6 years.
245/238/202/CS, no attemps
Researcher in Cardiology for 1 year.
5 posters. (4 local, 1 National conference, all cardiology), no publication.

Q1: whats my chance
Q2: How many publications will I need next cycle if I fail this year.
Q3: Is it worth doing MPH or MBA from big Uni like John Hopkins to prove that you can do research in Cardiology for them to take me seriously. (A friend suggested that)
Q4: any other suggestions.

They will only see the most updated version of the PS, unless they have printed it. You're worried about nothing.

Did everyone receive acknowledgements from university of cincinnati?

Yes, I did. So I think its another generic email

Haven't received a single interview invite. Is this a bad sign?

Don't think so. It's early and they have a lot to Wade through. I applied a couple years back (didn't match) and some of my rejection emails were worded with. "We appreciate your patience, we received 800 applications..." I'd give it a few weeks before we can freak out

Did anyone of you got an email from Vida t/East Carolina University that we have to take the CASPer testing? How does it work

Yes. I created the account but you can’t take the test until August 8th.
Instructions attached to email they sent out.

This is ridiculous. Why do they expect a busy 3rd year resident to do one more exam? Haven't we all done enough exams in our life for them to select candidates for interview. Another way to limit the number of candidates. Luckily I did not apply for this program. as this program is well known to match only one with connections.

You know the real head scratcher? Not only do we have to take a 90 minute exam, and not only can we only take it on August 8th, but we also have to pay $50 to take it

Sounds like Rush with their "Supplemental Application"

I agree, this is so annoying. I got the same request to take the CASPer for Vidant. Isn’t this what the interview is for? Wonder how many people they weed out before offering the option to take the CASPer. I signed up for it, since I haven’t heard back from any other program yet.

When should I start getting worried for not getting interviews?

After August 3rd week! GI and Cardio programs don't have time to review applications until it is really late for them. These people like to work under stress, so they wait for the stress to build up and then in one or two days, applications will be reviewed and invites sent out.

This process is more nerve-wracking than I thought and we're less than 2 weeks in. Good luck everyone.

The silence is unnerving, but the list above shows few programs have made interviews offers. I'll bet we start to see some movement tomorrow (Friday).

i thought i would be somewhat competitive for a few of those that have offered interviews. guess not.

i thought i would be somewhat competitive for a few of those that have offered interviews. guess not.

Plenty of interview offers left at the programs who sent out round one. Cream of the crop gets the first wave (which sometimes means realistic targets for their program); doesn't mean you won't interview there and doesn't mean you can't match there.

Can someone clarify what DO means in the above thread about dates of interviews? Is that the type of medical degree?

Is it too competitive this year or so early to judge ! No interviews or rejections. Complete silence

I’m in the same boat as you. Applied to 102 programs and have only heard from Vidant/ECU about them wanting me to do that CASPer test. I’m a DO applicant, so I applied very broadly.

I applied to 202 programs and only got that. Basically every program in the US except California programs

US IMG.
