The number depends on where you studied and your visa status, to a certain extent. It looks like you have decreasing yields above 6-7 interviews for US graduates, and > 10 for IMGs.

great post. with all that said i hope people are mindful and consider canceling interviews in a reasonable time, so others can be considered as an alternate interviewee.

Hi everyone, I am curious about how important Step 3 scores for matching?

When compared to recommendation letters, scholarly activity, ITE scores, where you did med school, etc? I understand it's hard to compare since DOs and MDs have a different set of boards (i.e. USMLE vs. COMLEX). I am planning to take it in the next couple of months

If you're a DO taking usmle step 3 is a waste of time and money.

Save your money. It will not help significantly. There are better ways to enhance your resume and competitiveness like research, letters, connections.

Thanks everyone! Just wanted to clarify that I'm a graduate of a US allopathic school, was just wondering how much weight PDs would place on USMLE Step 3 compared to other factors like you mentioned. I'm not sure if it carries the same importance for fellowship that USMLE Step 1 plays for residency match.

In my experience, two PDs I spoke with use step scores to filter out applications and choose from the rest based on program reputation, scholarly work, LORs, etc to decide who gets interviews. Step scores are important for that initial screening of applications. I am not really sure if they use step 1, 2 and/or 3 scores to do this.

Wait...you’re a 3rd year and haven’t taken step 3?
There are programs that require step 3 to be completed by pgy 2 to be able to progress... they may hesitate to interview someone who can’t get a state license.

I'm actually a PGY1 who's been stalking these forums :) My program requires me to take USMLE step 3 (or COMLEX for my osteopathic colleagues) before PGY2. I prefer to take it as soon as possible so I can focus more on being a good resident, letters, scholarly work, and learning internal medicine in general (rather than peds, OBGYN).

My program (and probably others) is very intense on ITE performance (especially during PGY2) and my PDs specifically told me they don't care what score I get on step 3 (just pass it and get it over with). At the same time however I feel fellowship directors may have a different opinion on the relative importance of step 3. Unlike in the old days where all you needed to do was pass, things may be different now.

Also very sorry for hijacking this tread, I know it's more for discussing interview dates. Lol.

ol.

my interview experience has largely revolved around my LoRs and research/publication/posters. and segues into other things on my cv.

just take the test and move on with life. imo as long as u pass, it’s not gonna make or break ur app.

Totally agree. I really don't think anyone cares as long as you pass. I was always an average test taker (including Step 1) but passed comfortably, and no one on the interview trail batted an eye or asked me about it. What's more important is that you demonstrate your passion and commitment to the field through research/publications/LoRs.

Sorry to hijack this thread — but for applicants interviewing this year, wanted to ask: how important is research and publications to getting interviews? I understand that it is a large part of what’s discussed during interviews.

Will be applying next year with solid LORS and away rotations but it feels daunting to find and start a research project this year. I also don’t have strong research methodology skills. Have poster presentations and several case reports but in other fields than rheum (ID, etc). Any advice on how to even start with research? Thank you!

Your best bet is to do a retrospective chart review project and submit it as an abstract for a rheumatology or medicine conference. You can also do QI projects inpatient or outpatient too. You can reach out to your program's fellows and ask about any research projects that you could help them out with.
It is good that you have posters and case reports done already - you are actually ahead of a good chunk of the competition.

What are peoples' opinions/concerns regarding training at a program that has VA hospital/clinic rotations incorporated into the curriculum versus not having this clinical experience?

What are peoples' opinions/concerns regarding training at a program that has VA hospital/clinic rotations incorporated into the curriculum versus not having this clinical experience?

hard to decide.

it’s definitely a plus imo and seems like a nice adjunct, but i dont think it’ll make or break the training experience.

would be nice to hear thoughts from some of the more seasoned posters.

i imagine u get to see more msk issues at the cost of having to deal with the problems that come with working at a va.

I was just curious...did you guys see any people who had been 1 year out of residency during your interviews....anyone has an idea if someone applies an year late how badly will it affect the chances in Rheum?.

I've definitely seen people who have been working as a hospitalist. Even saw someone who was 5 years out of residency. Not sure how it factors into the selection criteria though.

on the interview trail i’d say 25% of candidates ive met are post-grad. another 25% are chiefs. 50% are pgy-3

rank lists due soon. how’s everyone feeling?

im optimistic, but that match rate has me nervous

What's the consensus on telling programs where you are ranking them? I know they can't tell us what they themselves are doing but applicants can say "you're my #1, 2, 3, etc", right?

Yes. I sent an email to my #1 program that I was ranking them first and ended up matching there. The programs cannot tell you anything back though without risking violating the match rules. I didn't hear back from my program until after I matched there.
I wouldn't send emails to other programs if they're not your #1. It is very easy for PDs to read between the lines and know you are not their #1 choice. I don't think it is worth the risk IMO.

Programs like applicants can tell you anything they want...they can’t ask you where you plan to rank them and you can’t ask them where they plan to rank you.

How would you guys rank the following programs based on reputation?

University of Chicago, UPMC, Montefiore/Albert Einstein, George Washington, Brown, Dartmouth, Jackson Memorial (Miami), Wisconsin college of Med.

I know all over the country, location doesn't matter that much to me. Thanks!

IMO UPMC, U Chicago (lean Chicago if serious researcher with plans for grants etc) > GW, Montefiore > Brown, Dartmouth, MCW > Jackson Memorial

If you want to do PP though, reputation matters much less and location/clicking with faculty matter much more.

Congrats to everyone who matched!!! Rheum is the best.

Would someone mind sharing screen shots of the match rate in each specialty? Last year that was available to matched applicants at the time of the match and I'm curious to know.

to answer this question you have to log into nrmp
- click options
- click NRMP match outcomes for institutions by state
- you can then "search" by Rheumatology and keep scrolling down. you will see who did not fill their quota.
- Looked like yale, a Miami program, and some east cost institutions didn't fill. total of 7 unmatched spots.
- use above though to double check!

I’m applying next year for Rheum. Would love to know the match rate/which programs went unmatched. Please PM!

glad to hear it! Best of luck to you. Here’s the data from this year for matching

the data for unmatched programs isn’t as helpful. Over 95% matched, so it’s a small number. Sometimes programs “didn’t match” because they took their own fellows outside the match.
