I haven't seen this date posted yet, but I know I can't be the only one taking it on this day. It's almost exactly two months away, and hopefully everybody's prep is productive so far. I've been doing a lot of practice tests, and, at the advice of others, ordered a quarterly subscription to The Economist to try and help out with Verbal (jury's still out on that one). My target score is going to be tough to reach, and I still have a lot of work to do to get there. We'll see how it goes in about 60 days.

Any other "7/14ers" out there?

Lately, I've been having major problems with VR. When I read the passages, they hardly make sense. I'm having a difficult time extracting the main ideas. This really hit me hard with AAMC 9 and 10. I swear the passages are harder there.

Verbal on AAMC 9 was tough. Only two of the 40 questions were ranked "easy"; the rest were moderate or hard. I think I remember 10 being difficult as well.

I read a tip on here a while back that has really helped me, though. When I read a passage, I pretend I have to give a presentation on the passage immediately afterwards to a group of 4 of my friends. Therefore, while I'm reading, it kind of forces me to think about what I would be telling them as the most important stuff and the general idea of the passage -- i.e., what point the author is trying to make. When I come to something that seems important and something I'd include in my presentation, I highlight it.

In fact, it may even be a good idea to actually try this out with a friend after reading a passage. Read the passage and then try explaining it to him/her afterward. Just make sure that whatever you do when you read, be certain you get the central point of the passage. One way or another it will be tested -- either directly or indirectly.

Just took my last practice test, AAMC 11, and I'm ecstatic!!!

AAMC 11- 40 (14-11-15)

Took them in this order:
AAMC 7- 37 (13/14/10)
AAMC 8- 37 (11/13/13)
AAMC 9- 34 (12/12/10)
AAMC 10- 34 (12/10/12)

Really, really, really happy obviously!! Wish I could get my verbal back to the 12/13 range but hopefully I can keep the PS/BS going!

Wooooohoooo!!!

My plan for rest of week:
Wednesday- review AAMC 11 and do some of verbal self assessment
Thursday- hardcore studying.. going to run through every single chapter in TBR/EK + some verbal assessment
Friday- chill, light review of my notes in the AM + final part of verbal assessment

Wow, that's brilliant. I'll try that. Thanks for the tip!!!

I have a question. What is this "assessment" that everyone keeps referring too?

The assessments are question sets you can purchase from AAMC. They're retired AAMC exams, and are suppose to tell indicate how well you'll do on the exam. The questions are not timed and can only be answered once. They've been great practice for me. You can purchase them at the e-mcat site. All 5 exams (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, O. Chem, Verbal) are $105. The official name is "Self-Assessment Package".

Yep, definitely recommend buying them although its a bit late for our test day.

I have 3/4 of the verbal one left to do and will be doing 3 passages each of the next few days to stay in gear.

I have it open in one window and submitted random answers in another so I can check my answers as I complete each day... don't want to go until Friday without knowing whether I'm doing bad haha.. otherwise too late to change strategies.

I plan to take AAMC 11 tomorrow as well, hopefully I can break a 33 :meanie:

That's a monster score, bro. Congrats!!

From what I've read on here, AAMC 11 is most like the real thing, so you're in good shape to hit one out of the park come Saturday. Also, keep in mind AAMC 9's verbal was very tough and you still notched a 12, so you might be able to do even better! (As if a 40 wasn't good enough, lol)

Wow that's a terrific score; any suggestions for last minute improvement? 6 points is a huge gap.

Chill, focus, be confident and perform.

At this point, your maximum score is pretty much decided.. last minute studying isn't going to drastically increase your max. score. Just make sure you're going in to the test with the right mindset and can perform and get as close as possible to your max score.

6 points is huge but really, it came because I eliminated many of the mistakes I was making when I was hitting 37s and 34s. Still made a few but caught a bunch this time around.

I also think the improvement came because the PS was much more calculation heavy.. which sorta suits me. BS was much less physio and much more analyzing Bio experiments.. also one of my major strengths.

Hopefully the real deal will be similar.

Thanks! Hopefully AAMC 11 does predict well because that would be awesome.

As for verbal, not sure what's happening haha.. I thought I had it down (see 13/14s) and then it started slowly slipping. I have a few more verbal passages I could do to hopefully bump that 11 a little bit.

I doubt I hit a 14/15 in PS and BS again so would be nice to bump my VR up a point or two to give me some extra help hitting the 40s.

Days away! Final AAMC practice for me this morning: AAMC11 11P 11V 13B

PS had a few things I knew I needed to refresh but hadn't yet, thankfully I'm reminded to review them now instead of finding out on saturday lol.

My plan for the rest of the week: Today/tomorrow: review old full lengths as a refresher of things I missed, review formulas. Friday: rest, maybe light review of formulas/concepts nothing big.

What'd you think of PS? I thought it was the hardest PS I had taken.. lots of calculations and SO MUCH PHYSICS.

Good job though! 35 is awesome!

Meh, after I did it I was like "that was a rough PS" but after reviewing I mostly got clipped on a few calculation errors, two of which were a result of having converting cm^3->m^3 wrong. That was the thing I knew I had to practice and now I'll be sure to do like 10 conversions both ways to make sure that doesn't happen again. Typically my calculations are spot on, but like you said it was calc intensive.

35 is ok, I feel like the 37-38 is more representative of where I am right now but if it comes back "only" a 35 I'll take it, lol.

I'm happy my verbal has improved and is consistent, it puts me in a good position.

Good job on the 40 btw, here's to doing that on the real thing.

Thanks, same to you!

I sat there for a good minute or so making sure I converted that right (I think it was cm^2 to m^2 if i remember correctly). Ended up saying, well, if I have 5 cm length and 1 cm width that'd be an area of 5 cm^2 but .05 m * .01 m = .0005 m^2!

Takes longer and its stupid to spend so much time on something so trivial but every point matters and someones, the stupider you can solve a problem, the better off you are.

You can do it!!

All the work is in already so be confident you've prepared enough!

Just finished AAMC 11, and I'm happy to report in! 14/10/11

PS - I was very pleased with this section, I felt it was a bit difficult, but I was very happy with the way I timed myself throughout. There were 4-5 questions I had marked, and with the additional time I was able to reason my way through them. Overall, I hope the PS section is something like this on test day, I enjoy the calculation heavy sections

VR - The verbal section was well, verbal. I am consistently getting 0 to 1 mistakes on passages I 'enjoy', but I consistently get nailed on passages in the Humanities (2-3 wrong). At this point, I can only hope for a social science heavy VR....

BS - I am happy and dissapointed at the same time. I didn't map one of the passages correctly due to careless reading, and this cost me a few points. I was able to get through the Ebola passage though, which was a little easier than everyone makes it out to be. Overall, I am satisfied with this particular test, seeing as it was biology heavy. I am a human physiology major, so I wouldn't mind a few more physiology passages on test day though 🙄

I'm about to take my final AAMC today, hoping to finally break the 35 barrier. I seem to make a lot "careless" mistakes which are of course me tossing aside a question as obvious without looking at it thoroughly. I'm going to try and buckle down today and go for 36+.

AAMC 3 9 /10 / 10 29
AAMC 4 9 / 9 / 11 29
AAMC 5 10 / 8 / 11 29 (It was a curse, I swear.)
AAMC 7 10 / 11 / 13 34
AAMC 8 12 / 12 / 11 35
AAMC 9 10 / 10 / 11 31 (My in loud environment test 🙁 )
AAMC 10 11 / 12 / 11 34
AAMC 11 15?/15?/15? 45? (Dreaming big!)

since im all out of aamc exams, ive been doing kaplan FLs and my timing seems to be wayyy off!! I do feel like the kaplan FL have much much more reading and longer passages than the aamc's did.

Will the real deal be more like the aamc or kaplan FLs just in regard to passage length? Ive read here and there that difficulty wise the kaplan Fl are more similar but not sure length wise?

any comments?

The real test would almost have to be more similar to the AAMC FLs when you consider that those AAMC FLs were actually administered as the real thing at one time. I've never dealt with Kaplan FLs, but I don't imagine they're more authentic. It shouldn't hurt to take a harder test though, especially if your timing is not a major issue.

Lol well that makes sense.

Timing is not a major issue for me but its not like a finish with 5 mins to spare. I usually finish just in time for PS and BS and have to rush a bit on VR, but this kaplan FL completely guessed on almost 2 whole passages for PS and 1 passage for BS and VR so that got me worried.

Awesome score! I agree on PS, i thought it was hard but very calculation based and I'm pretty good at those type of questions.. I wonder if we got the same 2-3 wrong (I got stupid limiting angle question wrong, the solubility discrete [stupid!] and then didn't notice what they asked for in one question with hydogen gas).

VR- same, that one photography passage murdered me.

BS- Hehe, i love the bio heavy test! I'll give you like one physio on Saturday okay? Make it endocrine or digestive though!

Just out of curiosity, have you taken any of the BR Passages out of their review book? I am considering it to review topics that pertain to cellular biology such as the cell cycle and cellular communication.

P.S. I got the same questions wrong in the PS section lol... That angle question and solubility question:bang:

I did a few BR passages very early in my studies but honestly, they are so much harder than AAMCs and probably the MCAT.

I might do the last exam in each book which I think is supposed to be a review for the entire book but not so sure I'm going to want to devote time to that.

That angle question was like WTF.. had right answer at once and then switched back... solubility I narrowed it down to the two obvious answers and kept switching back and forth.

Yeah, you're probably right about BR's difficulty in comparison to the MCAT. I'll probably pick and choose 2-3 passages in my weakest areas.

And I think I learned something every important during that angle question... The MCAT author's do not care about human test subjects! I eliminated two answers which left me with two choices: one angle which was logical because the passage mentioned 'human subjects' and another angle which was logical due to physics' constraints. I'm going to side with physics every time now

Yep, same thing.

I was like "well it could be that one but he might fall off and kill himself.."

Then I ended up changing it literally at the last second because I thought maybe the counterweight would hit the fulcrum but I guess the counterweight can just go through the fulcrum.

Weird question.

Wow, you weren't kidding about the AAMC 11 PS section and that VR passage. I started the passage feeling good and those calculations were very strange for timing. I can only hope that type of VR passage isn't on the real thing (I only got questions in it wrong...).

Meaning your VR score must have been pretty good, which is awesome!

I'm currently taking the Verbal Assessment, and haven't finished it yet. Therefore I don't know how well/poorly I'm doing. However, I think I found a strategy that works for me.

Instead of highlighting "important" words/concepts as I read the VR passage, I now read a paragraph at a time then go back and highlight the words (i.e. read a paragraph then go back to highlight). This seems to give me a better sense of the what the paragraph is talking about.

Has anyone found success using a similar strategy?

I tried that for a bit, but I found that if I just gave the passage 100% focus while being confident that it was unnecessary. I took the EK strategy that they spout in their Audio Osmosis of being alert, not relaxing, being confident, and focused. Now I have 10-12 minutes at the end of Verbal to go back and clarify confusion if any comes up.

It's do or die time now everybody. 2 days left, how is everybody going to spend it? I personally plan to finish up review of AAMC 11, EK 101 #13 and do EK 101 #14. Resting Friday.

I took AAMC 11 on Tuesday, scored 3 points higher on it than I did on any other exam, although I felt it was much harder. Dumb luck perhaps, or everything is finally sinking in.

Today is my last day of studying. Nothing major, read through my notes make sure I have all of my equations down and do some verbal passages. I'm not sure if I'm more excited about doing nothing tomorrow, or all of the drinking I'm going to do Saturday night.

When I initially started doing Verbal, I found it was helpful for me to Map the passage manually. As it turns out, I never actually referred back to my map anyways. It was simply a mechanism to force me to evaluate the author's opinion and major argument. Nowadays, I simply read the passage and map the passage mentally, this allows me sufficient time to refer back to the passage and review marked passages.

If you are comfortable with your method though, then I would not change it now since we are so close to test day. But if you want to try something different, try doing a few passages with minimal highlighting. If you feel as though it is too late to alter your method, just stick with what works for you. I've realized that Verbal is all about your own individual strategy; do what works best for you!

Just finished my review of AAMC 11, and now I plan to run through my 'Why I missed it' sheets along with a brief skim of all the EK books. Friday I will probably review old AAMC's and relax for the most part.

Best of luck everyone, we're almost done! 😎

So what are you guys doing tomorrow?

I'm going to wake up at 5 am (so I can easily fall asleep at 9 pm Friday night), my goal is to read all my notes and do verbal. Hopefully, I can finish this all by 1 or 2 pm. From then on I'm going to go hangout and spend time with friends and possibly go t the gym as well (haven't gone in a week!), I want to make sure I can fall asleep right away!

same plan.

taking it semi easy tonight will do some verbal and light review.

tomorrow waking up around 5 or 6 so i can tire myself out.. will review in the AM and do some verbal before putting it all away forever

Saturday night? Why wait so long???

Drinking at 2 p.m. the moment I get out of that testing center!!

Only so I can get a nap and another shower before I go to my buddy's to start grilling then hit up the bars. Drinking and driving is ill advised, so I have to wait until I get to his place, 25 minutes away.

But, tomorrow I'm picking up some streaks and a case of beer to be ready.

I'm pretty much done studying. I'll do some verbal later this evening, but that is it. Let the cards fall where they may.

Took my final AAMC FL today. My score of 34 was my highest yet. My scores seem to be all over the place though. BS was terrible. I felt like I had just enough knowledge to be confused on some of the stuff. Oh well, I know what I'll be looking at over the final day.

AAMC 8: 13/11/10 = 34 on 7/12/2012
AAMC 11: 10/12/11 = 33 on 7/4/2012
AAMC 10: 11/11/9 = 31 on 7/1/2012
AAMC 9: 10/11/10 = 31 on 6/17/2012
AAMC 3: 10/10/8 = 28 on 4/8/2012

My average score is a 31.4, but I don't feel like that's a good representation. Only the last 3 tests were taken after I had reviewed all the content. That gives a 32.67. I'll go with that. It makes me feel better anyway.

I'm starting to get nervous for this test. My practice test scores (all 2 of them this time around) are right where I'd like to be, but I'm afraid I'll have a repeat of last time :scared:

:luck: Best of luck to us all. I'm sure we'll need it (yes, even those of you scoring 40's 😉 )

AAMC11- 14/10/14- 38

That makes it

AAMC9 14-10-13 - 37
AAMC10 14-8-15 - 37
AAMC11 14-10-14-38

Hopefully I can perform as well on the real deal!

I'm tired of the MCAT. I don't feel like reviewing anymore, even though I'm not even half-way done reviewing. Anyone else feel the same way?

I just want to watch movies and play video games all day....

Ha, yeah I know what you mean. But, just one more day left and then it's all over.

Another strong performance, nabiles. Congrats! I have little doubt you're going to excel tomorrow.

Which reminds me... I don't usually sift through the other dates' threads, so I'm not sure how we're doing in relation to other groups, but we have a number of individuals with some pretty ridiculously good practice test scores. I think that's a testament to all the hard work we've put in not just reviewing and practicing, but in learning the material the first time through while taking the pre-reqs and upper level classes. If nothing else, we'll know we gave it our best shot, and really that's about all you can control.

Good luck to everyone tomorrow. Hopefully every question is on a topic you're comfortable with.

Thanks man! and Agreed! How long did you study for the test rjosh? Whose doing work schoolwork today?

I noticed that when I do aamc passages individually, I average 1 wrong or 0 wrong. For example, during the aamc official guide, there are 6 verball passages and on 3 I got 100% the other 3 I got one wrong. I think that when I do the verbal on the practice tests I lose concentration and focus because of 7 passages straight after verbal. Anyways, I really did not want to do anything mcat related, but I have 8 aamc passages I haven't done yet so I'm going to do 7 of them straight as well as the 8th sometime today (since my verbal is scaring me!). I also haven't done the 3 passages for ORGO in the official guide so I'll do those as well since there the most recent representation. I also haven't read my notes in a while so I'll probably do that as well meaning I'll be doing 5ish hours today. UGHHH! I woke up at 7:00 am today because I went to bed at 1-2 am last night (couldn't sleep). I'm going to do mcat work til 1 or 2 pm then I'm hanging out all day with friends until 8 pm and I'm then getting into bed. I'm going to try and wake up tomorrow at 5:30 am, hopefully I won't be tired.

Good luck people!!!!!

Btw it is interesting to note that I have gotten the same raw score on all 3 of my last AAMC FL, 129 lol

It's tough to say how long I've studied for this. Usually when I was taking the pre-reqs or other classes, I studied the material with the overall goal of not just doing well on a test, but knowing/remembering it for the MCAT. So while it wasn't exactly studying just for the MCAT back then, it kind of counts.

I'd say I started doing MCAT specific work, though, a few months ago, with heavy preparation starting about 4 weeks ago. In those 4ish weeks I've done around 7 to 8 hours a day of studying, with 3 or 4 break days mixed in. Hopefully it'll all pay off tomorrow.

I'm actually about to leave my place in an hour to drive to the testing center. I want to get an idea of the driving time, as well as trying to actually go inside and see what the air temperature is like. I assume it'll be comfortable, but I don't wanna be dressed in shorts and a t-shirt if they got the AC cranked up.

Other than that, I'm just going to review self-assessments and old FL's and try to catch the ballgame on TV tonight. I got up early for class this morning, so hopefully I'll be able to get to sleep at a decent hour tonight. 🙂

Sounds like a good plan/. I'm going to head over to my center as well though it may be later on when they are closed. I just don't want to be lost!

Holy crap it's tomorrow!

I'm finishing up reviewing all my AAMC FL's as a reminder of my past mistakes, then I'm just going to reinforce formulas and concepts (and relax). I'm also going to do my best to keep off SDN, so good luck everyone!!

I am confident but also nervous as ****. Either way 1 o'clock beers tomorrow are going to taste so ****ng good.
