Disclaimer: I did not write this thread - it has been passed down through the eons by pre-allo staff.

It is that time of year again!
The AMCAS Application will be opening SOON! This is a place for all things AMCAS related so that we don't flood the first page. All threads created after this one will be merged into this thread. All previously created threads that are bumped will be re-directed here, and closed if bumped again.

Reminder: Each thread has a search function!! PLEASE use it!!.

Also, one of your first resources should be the source itself. Almost any basic question you have about AMCAS can be found by reading the AMCAS FAQ and the AMCAS instruction manual. Please try to find your answer before posting your question.

The AMCAS FAQ can be found here and the 2026 applicant guide can be found here.
This thread is brought to you by the Pre-Allopathic Volunteer Staff. Ask away, and good luck!!

AMCAS FAQ from 2012 through 2025; please let us know if there are any changes. Will be continuously updated as new information is brought to light.

General Submission/Big Picture Questions

1. When does AMCAS open? How soon can I submit?

The AMCAS application opened on May 1st, 2025, and is able to be submitted on May 27th.

2. When can I start uploading my transcripts to AMCAS?
As soon as the application opens.

3. How should I organize my information in the Work and Activities Section?
The Pre-Allo staff has created a new thread that compiles some of the best bits of information and contains a FAQ for the Work and Activities section. That thread can be found here. Please post questions regarding this section into that thread.

4. What about Letters of Rec?
Funny you should ask. There is a thread for that too.

5. What should I include in my personal statement?

Wouldn't you know....there is a thread for that too. Check out the Official Personal Statement Reader Thread for some great advice.

6. How is AMCAS different from prior years?
Within the activities section, hours should now clearly be separated between completed and expected. Completed and Anticipated Hours

7. What is all of this about being a reapplicant?
AMCAS will only show you are a reapplicant to each of the individual schools you have applied to previously. No school at anytime during the AMCAS process can see if you have previously applied to any other school, nor can it see any other school your are currently applying to. No school except the individual school your are reapplying to can see any part of your previous AMCAS application, and only if they have kept it on file, which most schools do. AMCAS does not provide your previous application to any school, whether a reapplicant or not. Every MD school can see if you have been accepted previously at an MD school. While AMCAS guidelines do allow individual schools on their secondary applications to ask if you had ever previously applied to medical school, the question does not appear to be widely used. It is more common for individual schools to ask if you have ever been accepted previously matriculated at any medical school, which would include allopathic, osteopathic, or off-shore.

8. What parts of the AMCAS application can I change after submitting? If I change these things, will I have to wait longer?
You can add and assign LORs (Letters of Recommendation)

You can change your name, current address, and alternate names

You can add a future MCAT test date

Several other things that can be found here on the AMCAS official site.

No, you will not have to wait longer once you re-submit.

9. How long does it take to get verified after submitting?
It varies. Generally, the later you submit, the longer it takes. You can look at last year's verification times here.

10. When do secondaries come out?
This varies from school to school. If you are interested in a particular school, your best bet is to check out that school's specific thread in the "School Specific Discussions" forum.

11. What are some important dates that I should know?
May 1st, 2025 -- AMCAS Application Opens
May 27th, 2025 -- First Day to Submit AMCAS
June 27th, 2025 -- First Day Applications are Transmitted to Medical Schools
October 15th, 2025 -- First Day Acceptance Offers Can Be Made
April 15th, 2026 -- AMCAS Suggests Narrowing Down to 3 Acceptances by This Date
April 30th, 2026 -- Date By Which Applicants Must Hold Only One Acceptance

Transcript/Coursework Questions

12. What about transcripts in general? Tell me everything!

Once the AMCAS application opens in May, you will be given an AMCAS ID number. You are also then able to add schools (and the dates you attended those schools) into AMCAS. When you do this, you will be able to print a transcript sheet that contains your AMCAS ID number on it for each school. When you go to order your transcripts, have your school include this sheet with the transcripts to be sent.

12a. I know this was asked in question 3 above....but do I really really really have to include every transcript?
Yes, you MUST include transcripts from all colleges you have ever attended. You cannot send the transcripts yourself (as in, getting a copy into your hands, and then sending it to AMCAS); they have to come from the school directly to be considered official.

12b. Do I have to include the AMCAS sheet when sending in my transcripts? What happens if I don't?
You should really include this sheet; giving AMCAS any chance to lose your transcripts is a bad idea. However, I can tell you from personal experience that one of the 8 transcripts I had to send was done online, and I was unable to include the sheet. I gave instructions for them to write my AMCAS ID on the envelope, and it got there fine. But again....making more work for AMCAS employees or giving them an excuse to lose your stuff is never a good idea.

13. What about in-progress courses or courses I know I am going to take over the summer? What about Pre-reqs I am taking over the summer?
There is a chance for you to list all future courses on the AMCAS application. No, you can not update these grades later in AMCAS, but you CAN update individual schools later with these grades. This is actually a perfect opportunity for you to send an Update Letter to schools telling them again how much you love them and telling them what you've been up to.

14. I took a class at a community college while I was in high school. Do I still need to report that transcript?
Yes. If you don't, you are risking being found out and having a school revoke an acceptance.

15. My spring grades don't come out until May/June/July/Whatever. Should I wait until I get them to submit my application?
If you decide you want to apply as early as possible, your spring grades would not be on your transcript. This is a judgement call. If your spring grades matter a LOT (they contain 3 prereqs, all As, and this is the first time you've taken a full load), wait until they come in before you send your transcripts in.
If not (they result in a minimal impact to your GPA, have only 1 prereq, and don't show anything special), go ahead and submit and plan to send updates to schools. Sending them some good grades is a good reason to contact them later if you've had a lot of silence from them. You are at a greater advantage being early than having more grades that will barely impact your GPA.

I would also suggest "rushing" transcripts whenever possible. The peace of mind is worth the extra money.

Also, keep in mind; you can submit without transcripts. The problem is that you will not be verified without them.

16. Does AMCAS begin verifying my coursework once they receive my transcripts?
No. AMCAS only verifies coursework once you submit your application. AMCAS will send you an email notifying you of the date they receive your transcript and the school that sent it, but that doesn't mean that your coursework is being verified.

17. Do I need to send in my transcript again, even if I sent it in last year?
Yes. See here AMCAS® FAQs

18. Will medical schools notice that a class included a lab?
In addition to selecting the "Combined Lecture and Lab" radio button, it is recommended that you add "and Lab" to the end of the course name. Please see the applicant guide:

2025-26 Applicant Guide

If you disagree with a change that AMCAS made, then submit an "Academic Change Request" form found on the Main Menu of your AMCAS application, but be prepared to back up your claim.

20. Help! What do I do with my AP classes?
Read through the AMCAS instruction manual, particularly page 32. For additional information on specific schools that accept AP credit, see this thread.

21. How do repeat courses average into the AMCAS application?
Both classes will need to be listed when you enter your information into AMCAS, and they will both be used when calculating your final GPA. If you want, you can this of this as "averaging" the grade, with the full amount of credit being equal to both classes together. Example: 3 units of C, class is retaken for 3 units of A. The final calculation would be 6 units of B.

22. Can I have my school send in a digital copy of my transcript? What email address do I send it to?
AMCAS has started accepting eTranscripts from some institutions that have registered with them. Consult your pre-health advisement office to see if this is available for your school. Your registrar will still need to send the eTranscript directly to AMCAS (AMCAS does not accept transcripts via email from applicants).

This FAQ is a work in progress. Please feel free to make suggestions in this thread or via PM for its contents; both questions and answers.

If you think something should be added to the FAQ, you see something that needs to be updated, or for any other concerns, tag @chilly_md , @PapaGuava , @gyngyn , or @Moko, or @wysdoc in one of your posts (or PM us!). If you do this, it's a HUGE HUGE HUGE help if you post the link to your source in your post!

Thanks and best of luck everyone!

Will all schools see / judge what I received on PREview? Or will the non-PREview requiring schools even look at it?

See below:

I doubt they will consider it if the school doesn’t have an existing approach for factoring it into the admissions process

Hello! I did some research with a doctor at a T10 med school in high school and was able to publish that work in a peer-reviewed journal during my first year of undergrad. I also presented this work at a high school research forum at the same med school during my senior year (of hs). I was going to include the publication in my primary app, but can I include the presentation as well or would it not count since it was during high school? Also, when I list it under activities, can I elaborate on the project, or do I just include the citation?

Also, I recently started working as an EMT this month and only have about 20 hours. However, I have about 50 hrs of ride-alongs. I am applying this cycle and also have ~150 hrs working as an MA and ~175 hospital volunteering hours in terms of clinical experience. Can I include EMT ride-along hours and/or certification/training hours as well? Thanks!

We have a separate Work and Activities thread, which can also be searched through for some more common scenarios that have accumulated over the past several years.

Leave off the high school specific conference. Citation alone is typically fine but you can write a short sentence or two putting that one in context since you won’t have a separate research entry.

EMT ride along hours is fine. You can delineate that and live training hiurs in your description if that helps.

Hello! I have a question regarding transcripts. My college awarded me credit for 1 year of language (10 credits) after passing a placement test. This is shown in the credits I earned before starting my undergraduate studies. Although I did take an AP class for this language, I did not take the AP test, just the placement test. My transcript does not show specifically that I took a placement test; these credits are lumped together with my other AP credits. How would I enter this in the transcript section? Thank you!
See page 38 of the AMCAS guide. Other forms of school specific test credit are listed as AP typically.

How much of a difference does when you apply make? I know it’s really important to apply early, but does it really have an impact on your application to submit the day it opens vs. two weeks in? I once read that if you are an average applicant, it might be better to wait a few weeks so you’re not being as directly compared to the top applicants who submit at the very start. Is that true or should I just apply as early as feasible?

Submit your best possible app, and ideally this happens within the first few weeks. Do not be concerned about the myth for trying to get it in within the first hour or game the timing. Schools all have their own way of reviewing and processing applications what’s they receive secondaries

I took AP courses in high school and received credit for them. My university transcript shows transferred hours and the number of credits, but it doesn’t list the specific AP exams (like “AP Stats” or “AP Biology”). I know I’m not supposed to send high school transcripts, but I wanted to make sure my university transcript alone is enough and that I don’t need to send official AP score reports from the College Board. I called my university, and they weren’t sure.

Do not send. See page 37-38 of the AMCAS applicant guide for more details.

GUYS are any of ur original written paragraphs or kinda AI-used words being flagged as GPT? What are you using to check? And if anything has been flagged, what are you planning? pls lemme know

I did community college courses through a program in high school and got 2 associate’s degrees. On my cc transcript its listed as:
Degree: Associate in Science
Plan: Interdisciplinary Studies

When filling out my AMCAS primary, would I list the plan as a “major”? Also, is it okay if I can't type out the entire name of the "major"? It is getting cut off after a certain number of letters...

That’s fine to shorten major.

What does that school mean by plan? You said you got a separate degree for it, so it sounds like it is just another major, which you can list.

Thanks for you reply. The "plan" is basically like the concentration that I got my AS in...

Also, if I haven’t declared my minor at my current undergraduate institution yet, but plan on doing so, do I still list it on AMCAS? What if I don’t end up completing it?

Leave concentration off and just have one major. Minor is of little importance for admissions so you could leave that off if you aren’t positive you’ll get it.

hI! i had a publication recently and am confused as to how I should format it. I was going to just list it at the end of my description for the research activity, but I have been also working on a new project i wanted to talk about and don't think i'll have room in the original space.

How have people been just citing one publication for the category? (i.e. what do you put for organization, experience title, etc) And what should be in the description? (I haven't been able to find a general consensus)

I was thinking about just citing the paper, including the PMID and mentioning it is a peer reviewed article? Thanks🙂

We have a Work and Activities thread:

Please see point 14 in the above linked post. There are plenty of other commonly asked questions on that page as well.

On my official university transcript, AP credit appears before my first-semester college courses, even though both are listed under my freshman year. When entering this information in my application, I listed my first-semester college class first, followed by the AP credit—so the order doesn’t exactly match the transcript, but the term and year do. Do I need to match the order of courses on my transcript exactly, or is it acceptable as long as the term and year are correct?

Term and year is all that matters

I plan on taking the MCAT June 27th. Would I need to be registered in order to mention that I have an upcoming test date? Or can I list it on my primary and register later? (Also, I'm not quite sure if this question would be acceptable on this thread, but would June 27th be considered too late?)

I understand that AMCAS requires courses to be entered in chronological order. I took community college classes while in high school, then started my four-year university with my freshman year, and later took another course at the same community college during my sophomore year of undergrad(summer semester).

On my transcript, all community college courses (including the one from sophomore year) are grouped together and appear before my university coursework. This makes the order look like: high school (community college), sophomore year (community college), then freshman year (university), which isn’t fully chronological.

Should I list my coursework strictly in the order of when each class was taken (e.g., high school CC, freshman university, sophomore CC), even if that means alternating between schools? Or does AMCAS group courses by institution even if it makes the overall order not fully chronological?

Considering that is one month from now, it would be good to register this weekend to ensure you get a spot and can complete the registration process fine. You will not be able to know what school list you are competitive for until the score comes back, but can consider applying to a throwaway school to get the verification process started.

Per the applicant guide, their example seems the emphasize the fact that it should remain with the home institution even if credit transferred and stay in the appropriate academic year. In the past, AMCAS has jumbled this order at times no matter what particular order applicants went through their transcripts. You can call AMCAS directly as well for further clarity.

Yes, I understand that I don't assign the credit to another institution. I was just unsure how to alternate schools to keep my coursework chronological, or if AMCAS just keeps schools separate. I called AMCAS, and they didn't answer my question.

How do I list a course I RETOOK at a different institution (such as at a Community College) on AMCAS? Do I need to check off the Repeat box (when inputting my coursework on AMCAS) the second time I took it regardless of where I took that prerequisite (for example, Gen Chem taken at School A first time but retook at School Bl)?

I have a similar situation. Do I really have to wait until the score comes back to send it in to schools? I feel like I could send it in to at least ten schools regardless of what my score is. I'm so confused on this process and why people wait, wouldn't submitting early even though I have no score help me at least get some of the automated non-screened secondaries out of the way?

People post secondary prompts on the forum if you are heavily invested in pre-writing, but preemptively applying to many schools and then ending with a significantly worse score than their median is essentially wasted money and time (if you already pre-wrote). Most applicants will still be able to apply to their state school(s), so that is one possibility. Your application will not be complete at schools either without an MCAT score and there is typically little benefit in being done a week or two earlier, contrary to popular belief.

Do BS/MD programs qualify for the "Have you applied to this medical school in previous years"? I applied to the Flexmed program at Mt. Sinai a few years back, so I know I put yes for that, but not sure about BS/MDs. I do recall in my IIs being with exclusively medical school faculty rather than anyone at an undergraduate college.

If I wrote about an experience in my personal statement for a couple paragraphs, is it necessary to include it as an MME? I feel like I've said enough about it but idk if it's frowned upon to not include it as an MME. thanks!

No I think BS/MD are completely separate, and they are not done through AMCAS.

This is a Work/Activities question, but in general, you can choose your MME as you see fit. If there is not something new or another angle you can approach it, feel free to make a different activity as one of your MME.

Oops, my bad. Thanks though! 😊😎

!Help Needed!

Hi, I am super anxious and hoping anyone has insight into this. Basically, I am taking 2 courses at a community college, and begin June and end December 2025. On AMCAS, I listed these as "current/future," however on the school section where I input the community college's name, I said "yes, transcript needed." This felt obvious to me at the time, because, yes, I will need to send a transcript for that eventually. But I had NO IDEA that this meant I needed the transcript to submit today.

Well, I submitted today and now my AMCAS application is on "hold" because they have not received the transcripts for those classes that I haven't even taken. Further, I cannot wait until those come out, because that will be in December.

Does anyone have advice? This is my first time applying and I really am anxious about it now.

This is something only AMCAS can handle and you would have to call them.

If you have already taken classes at this school in the past and can order a transcript, you can try sending that. Otherwise, only AMCAS can fix this problem for you.

Hey chilly_md, thank you! I just called AMCAS after you said this and finally got a person on line. They were able to make a transcript exemption request, and now my application status has changed from "on hold" to "ready for review." I appreciate your response.

Hi, my college transcript lists some AP courses with credit hours, but some AP courses with credit zero are Test Placement Exceptions. Should I also include the AP courses with credit zero in AMCAS application? Thanks!

Hello,

I’ve finished my application and was re-checking the Applicant Guide before submission, and the guidance there on what do with dual enrollment credits and year designation (HS, FR, etc) has me very confused. Typically, any college credits taken before high school graduation would be HS, but another clause says that if you have a large number of dual enrollment credits, you can list your first year of college of freshman. I’m not sure what’s best in this situation, and I’m worried they’ll miscalculate my GPA or delay the processing. Any advice?

To clarify, I earned 60 college credits in high school, so I don’t know if I should count that as all freshman credits, or all as HS credits and start FR designation after high school.

Thanks!

Hi all! I submitted my AMCAS application yesterday after triple checking everything but I somehow missed the fact that the last word of my personal statement is cut off. I emailed AMCAS but im wondering how bad this looks?

There is nothing you can do about it if they do not let you change it. It is one word and there are still secondaries for schools to read to evaluate you on.

You may consider putting it down as exempt credit if they helped you place out of an intro class.

List it as high school per page 34 of the Applicant Guide.

Thank you. I have some separate labs that counted zero credit hours because it was included in lecture. They are listed on my transcript like this:
PHY 001 Physics I W/lab Credit 5
PHY 001 Physics 1 Lab Credit 0
When I put the Physics 1 Lab in AMCAS, should I select "exempt" or list it, check off" lab only", and put zero credit?

If this is all lumped under AP credit on your transcript and not separate from each other, pick AP and divide up the credits accordingly. I don't think it will matter if you pick lab only or not for the 0 credit entries.

Thank you! They are college courses, not AP credit. My school put the lab with zero credit on the transcript. Actually, it was included in the lecture. I am wondering how to enter Physics 1 Lab into AMCAS.

if my SO lives in a city / attends a certain school that is of interest to me, is there a way to mention that on a secondary or something? or is it something that won't make a difference

Thank you! They are college courses, not AP credit. My school put the lab with zero credit on the transcript. Actually, it was included in the lecture. I am wondering how to enter Physics 1 Lab into AMCAS.

PHY 001 Physics I W/lab Credit 5
PHY 001 Physics 1 Lab Credit 0

Just put exempt then for lab, and then lecture and lab for the one with 5 credits.

It will not make a difference unless you are married.

Would it make a big difference if I submitted my app tomorrow (June 3) versus on Friday (June 7)? I'm really struggling with writing my personal statement and activities descriptions and theoretically could turn it in tomorrow if needed but would really appreciate more time if it doesn't hurt my chances too much 🙁

No, please take the time to review. If you have not already read this great thread by Moko, take a few minutes for further clarification:

When adding a letter writer in the Letters of Evaluation section of AMCAS, it states that both an email address and a phone number are required. What should I enter if I don’t have my letter writer’s phone number?
