I was also wondering if the name of the award and the organization is long, we can introduce the abbreviation at the firs part of our description and then use that abbreviation throughout our description if needed!

In that case, if we want to group them together, the experience name should be travel award and we specify the few travel awards in the description, so what if the two awards are from two different countries, is that fine if we choose the one that we got from U.S. ?
You might put the one from the US first and use that for the details in the header, ie Contact, etc. In the description, when you describe the other award, give similar info for it in your narrative.

Also, if the travel awards were for conferences (or whatever), why not be more specific in your title and say, "Conference Travel Awards"?

You would use the abbreviation immediately after the spelled out name, and then use the abbreviation thereafter, eg American Chemical Society (ACS).

Publication questions:

To be honest, I have no idea how long I have dedicated towards publications and I am not sure if I would be underestimating or overestimating it. I was wondering if you could instruct me how can I be truthful meanwhile concise about this.

I expected that the form would ask about the name of journal, volume and etc, but I believe I should include the full reference in the experience description, please correct me if I am wrong since there is no other space for this!

Total Hours for Publications should be 1 hour. All the time that went into the research and preparation better belongs in the Research entry affiliated with it.

2) Yes, the full citation, or at least the PubMed ID# (if you have a lot of them) belongs in the narrative space.

So the hours for the publication belong to the research assistant position held?
What if it is a systematic review paper where the time spent was on the systematic search and writing the paper! I estimated the hours spent and it added up to about min 200 hours!

Much appreciated for all your answers and your time. So if we just add in the Pubmed ID, we dont need to add the full citation!?

I have a bunch of questions that I want to clear up.

1) I know clinical volunteering is a huge thing that is looked at on the apps, and I only had around 50-60 hours of it up to this point. However, the lack of hours (compared to what is expected) has not affected my experience as it actually one of my "most meaningful experiences" and most likely a part of my personal statement. I volunteered at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH), however since it was through a student organization, it was not on a consistent weekly basis and it was only 2 hours/session. We helped the kids with homework, played games with them, read them books, and in general tried to keep them in good spirits. The experiences I gained from volunteering are invaluable to me and I honestly could write pages on it. Should I be concerned about the lack of hours or can my description of the experience make up for it?

2) Is it possible for me to use my participation in one student organization under multiple categories? I held three leadership positions (should I put all of them under one heading?) and for 2 weeks, I did non-medical volunteering in a village in Nicaragua where we lived in the community and did service for most of the day for the entire two weeks.

Would I be able to put this under both leadership & non-medical volunteer/community service?

Also a side question about the leadership category. If I held leadership positions in multiple organizations, should I only use one header, or one for each organization?

3) I have been part of 3 research labs.

a) a stroke pathology lab which I only worked for a semester (I signed a contract saying I would only be there for a semester). In this lab I helped in the design of the study and filling in the IRB forms along with one other medical student.

b) a lung cancer lab which I worked for 1.5 semesters. Here, I researched genes and gene mutations (SNPs) related to neurotransmitter systems that could lead to nicotine addiction susceptibility in lung cancer patients. I spent a majority of my time sifting through gene databases and reading published papers to determine which genes mutations would be best for our study. However, due to some complications, I was unable to continue after submitting my results.

c) a neuroimmunology and spinal cord injury lab which I have now been part of for 9 months by the time I submit this app. I’ve been much more involved in experiments and techniques and I participated in lab meetings. I’ve even presented the results of preliminary experiment to my PI.

Should I list all 3 labs (I did gain some valuable experience from the first two although they were short lived)? If so, should I put it all under one lab/research header?

4) I participated in a one-month study abroad where I learned about the history of culture and politics in central Europe. Should I include this even though it was not medically related?

5) I shadowed 7 doctors for a total of 79 hours, however two of them (they were in a private practice together) I shadowed through a summer program for 45 hours. Should I split up those two from the rest, or just mention the program and the increased hours in the description? Also, in the description should I note the descriptions of what each shadowing experience entailed (i.e. relevant surgeries I saw, whether I was on rounds with the doctors, etc.) or just the hours?

6) I have a paid tutoring job. Would that fall under paid employment (non-medical) or teaching/tutoring?

7) Just a general question on the experience description. Is it just supposed to explain the position/organization/award/etc. and what you did in the position/organization or how you earned the award?

8) I’m pretty sure I read this on a previous thread, but I wanted to double check. Should the scholarships I received and the Dean’s List Recognition just go under one heading for awards? I assume in the description, I would explain the scholarship.

If you have space, it would be preferred to get in the full citation. If not, try to include the full title with PMID#, or an abbreviated version of the title if you are squeezed for space.

1) Without knowing all your clinical experience, I can't say if 50 hours is concerning or not, but critiquing activities lies outside the scope of this thread anyway, and better belongs in the WAMC thread.

2) Depending on the space available, you can choose to keep all the leadership roles for one activity together, or split them up if each is strong enough to stand on its own. It would be most efficient (assuming all the activities mentioned in question 2 are related) to have one Leadership and one Volunteer/Community Service space for the 2-week abroad experience (unless you have another short-term experience that could share a space with the latter).

It's best to have one header that applies to all the activities mentioned in the space, but it's possible to include more than one organization if you put the same header info for the others in with the description.

3) It would be very difficult to do justice to all three research labs and include all the header info for for the second and third if you use one space, unless you designate it as Most Meaningful. It would be most ideal to give each its own space, especially if you're aiming for institutions that emphasize research over, say, primary care. Or you could put two together and the more significant one on its own.

4) Study abroad activity is indicated on your transcript, so you need not include it as an activity unless it was particularly impactful in some way not related to academics.

5) There is no one right way to enter this type of activity. You can split out the two or include them with the others, as you wish. To be more space efficient, you might list the two that are related first, so the header ino applies to both. Then you will have less header info to squeeze into the narrative box of the remainder. See post #58 on page two of this thread for an example of what to include and where you can take shortcuts.

6) You can pick either, depending on what balances your application better. But make the other designation clear from the Name you pick.

7) Yes, and an indication of how selective the award was is also helpful, if you know. Like "Five were selected for this award out of 256 nominees," or some such. Sometimes, to avoid replicating info, it is better to include an award with the original activity description, to keep in in better context.

8) Scholarships and deans list can certainly go in a single space, but deans list, while commonly listed, isn't very helpful, since your GPA will speak for itself, and because the criteria vary by school, so feel free to leave it off. Side note: only include merit scholarships based on college work, and do explain the criteria. Including an amount is fine, if you like. Scholarships based on need or related to HS work can be included in another part of the application where you explain how you paid for school.

If you have space, it would be preferred to get in the full citation. If not, try to include the full title with PMID#, or an abbreviated version of the title if you are squeezed for space.

Thanks very much. the title is very long, can I message you about this?

My PM box is closed. Sorry.

Consider saving more space by truncating the author list, but stating your place in the lineup. A partial title that gives the gist is OK, too.

Great, thanks. would it also suffice to add "scholar" as the description of our publications?

Your question isn't clear to me. Nothing needs to be in the narrative description space except the citation. See my post #60 on page 2 for potential Names of a Publication space.

Thanks so much for the info, I thought we have to describe about our role in that publication!

sorry for the confusion, I meant using the keyword "scholar" for the "Experience Name"

Sorry if this question was already asked but if I'm using the Honors category to generally list all the honors I've received (Dean's List, Phi Beta Kappa, etc) who should I put as the contact person?

I was wondering if it would be better to integrate two different activities under one heading: health advocate consisting of university-based news reporter as well as publishing a column in university-based publication platform advocating for health

or I should add them separately ?

Your college's Registrar has a record of all of them.

It sounds like they'd fit together well as part of an educational mission (or the Artistic Endeavor of writing). But if each has enough hours and you have a lot to say, they could as easily be listed separately.

Thanks for taking the time answering our questions,
much appreciated,

With respect to Publications, what should I write in the title lines? I'm thinking two different things...

1) Experience Name: Title of Manuscript
Organization Name: Title of Peer-Reviewed Journal

2) Experience Name: First-Author on XXX in XXX Journal (I'm afraid this won't fit at all)
Organization Name: Our research group

The problem with the "experience name" is that the title of the manuscript usually does not fit!

You get about 63 characters for the Name of an activity.

Try not to re-use words within an entry, eg don't use Publication in the title since that's the tag you picked for the space. Examples might be: Accepted Second-Author Manuscript on [XXX Topic], or Co-Authored Paper on [XXX Topic] in Peer-Reviewed Journal. Or Scholarly Journal Article on [XXX Topic], or Peer-Reviewed Paper Available On-Line Ahead of Print, or somesuch.

The title of the manuscript is part of the citation that you'll put in the narrative space. Organization can be the name of the journal. Contact would be your PI or someone on the team.

Hey Catalystik, thanks for the help. I seen your post that was similar to this on the second page -you're everywhere man, thanks a ton.

I know you have mentioned that nothing other than the citation goes to the experience description, but would it hurt if we add our role and a bot of description there?

Usually that goes with the Research description that is affiliated, but if you need the extra space for more comments, go ahead and expand in the Publication space.

The Leadership designation, for AMCAS purposes, means "peer" leadership. If you are the only tutor in your business, I agree with you that the activity doesn't belong under the Leadership tag. If, OTOH, you recruited, trained, schedule, and/or otherwise manage other tutors, then the Leadership tag is appropriate.

Even if you list it under Teaching or Employment, you can still suggest the entrepreneurial role you took in founding a business somewhere in the title and via your description.

What if you run a tutoring business in your home with three other people involved and make let's say about $2000 a month.....but you don't declare it in income tax.....are you allowed to list this still? (not saying I am in this position specifically)

Can we also include all the abstracts under the same category even if one of our abstracts has got accepted to be presented in the upcoming months in one of the medical schools holding up a conference?

A few questions:

1) I TA'd for two classes, although it was primarily making exams, project rubrics, and grading so I didn't interact with the students. Would this be better as teaching, leadership, or something else? Currently have it as teaching.

2) I do some private personal training. Who would be a good contact for that? Myself or one of my longstanding clients? Additionally I do some of the training/ exercise programming online with my clients, should I differentiate between in-person sessions and online work? Or just mention in the narrative that I do some online work with it also?

Thanks!

While adcomms are not the IRS police and don't turn folks in, some have been known to ask those who've founded businesses detailed legal, and financial, and managerial questions to establish the applicant's understanding of responsible entrepreneur-ship. It won't reflect well if you don't understand about issues related to tax matters. You'll have to decide if you want to take that chance.

Yes, but for the one not yet presented, just state that it was accepted for presentation on x/xx/xxxx date at yyy, etc.

I'm listing an award I got to fund my research project under "achievements." However, under "work experience" should I re-list it? Not sure how to approach this

1) Employment or Volunteer (depending) might be better.

2a) I suggest using a long-time client who is aware they might be contacted.
2b) I would emphasize the in-person component most with a side mention of the online assistance.

Just mention it once, either under Awards or under the research description (often a better choice to keep it in context, unless you have a lot to say about it).

BTW, If you paid taxes on the monetary award, then it would be Employment, though you still have the choice of using the Research tag. If not, it was a stipend, and might be better listed under Research.

1) Employment or Volunteer (depending) might be better.

It was for credit so I don't think the volunteering classification would quite work, right?

Would be a student interviewer at my volunteer organization be considered leadership? I'm not sure what else I would put it as.

Hey guys, just had two quick questions. When using a catch-all category such as "Academic Recognition" to list all of our awards and recognitions without wasting space, (1) who do we put as our contact since there's no one person for all of our awards, and (2) what do we put for the "Award date" since the awards were given at different dates? Thanks!

Leadership implies taking initiative and managing peers to get a task done, which this isn't Why not just include this responsibility in with the description of the activity itself, especially if you don't have a lot of hours? Alternatively, if you are doing the interviews to give students practice with the interviewing process (like for jobs or med school), it would be educational and could be listed under Teaching. If the purpose of the interviews is to screen folks who want to join the organization, that won't work though.

1) Use the college Registrar, who has a record of everything.

2) Use the last award date or whenever you graduated, by which time you would have earned everything you list.

1) Do we actually have to indicate the total amount of hours? can we actually write for example "4 hours/week"? I volunteered at a hospital for more than a year and we did not have to sign in or anything in order to keep record of our volunteering, I used to volunteer 4 hours/ week but some weeks I skipped volunteering.

2) I did an internship at a hospital in the OR, where I observed all kind of surgeries, and shadowed surgeons and anesthesiologist for 40 hours/week for 3 months. Should I separate this experience into shadowing and clinical?

Thanks

1) You are required to enter a Total Hours figure. You may voluntarily include in the description "usually 4 hours per week". Make a best-faith estimate, subtracting the hours from weeks you took off, as you recall, from the maximum total.

2) If there were times that you helped patients directly, it would qualify as active clinical experience, and can be separated out and categorized as such, with its own distinct hours (as best you can guess them). Otherwise, it was all observational and should all go under Shadowing. I suggest distinguishing between surgical observation (which does not constitute a patient-physician 'interaction' if the patient was asleep) and clinic hours (which does).

If I volunteer as a "navigator" in a hospital where I basically stand in the front of the hospital and guide patients to different parts of the hospital would this be considered clinical?

Do you know which are visitors, which are coming for routine tests or appointments, and who is ill? What percent are currently sick or injured patients with whom you interact in a helpful way? Do emergent cases go through your door or access the ED in another way?

Question for Presentation/Conferences Attended. With the same poster, my research group presented at several conferences across the country. Now entering them into AMCAS, I'm several characters over. If I delete the contributors (Last name, First name initial., next one...) my count is fine. <-this is listed only once
Some people's last names are just really really long. How should I go about this? Is listing names that important?
My description follows:
Names... Poster Name Conference Name Location Date

Thanks.
