******* Official BAYLOR Acceptance Class of 2012 thread ********

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just finished my fafsa and I was going thru the baylor finacial aid website and found a little entrance interview(exam) everyone has to take. It took about 20 mins.

I noticed they were throwing a new complex up when I was in town. Do you or you Dad have any info on it?

my dad asked the worker guys (or something; my dad can be sort of. . .weird), and they told him the apts would be done in March & gave him the number for the office, but when he called there the lady was really surprised to hear from someone and wasn't even able to tell him what rent was going to be. anyhow, she's supposed to call him once they're. . .done, or something, but if i can get that number from him, i'll pass it along.

what is this "exam" about?..wow! you already finished your fafsa... i just got my pin 😕

man I haven't even gone to the fafsa website. Anyone have insight on the $$$ thing? I was wondering ow the loans worked...like when do we get the money and is it like a bulk thing at the beginning of the year?

If I am thinking of the right thing, it is an entrance exam to managing your loans while in school. It gives you all the basic information about your loans, subsidized, unsubsidized, interest rates, repayment, etc. You have to answer some questions about it at the end. It's just to ensure you understand what you are doing when you are borrowing money.

basically, you fill out the fafsa and financial aid paperwork for the school, most schools want this before march. fafsa calculates what loans to give you...school sends you your financial aid package in the summer....you determine how much you need and what loans you want to take.. you sign a copy and send it back to the school...you get your money 10 days before school starts...

this is what i gathered from the various financial aid packages...some one else care to add to this or confirm...

so are you going to baylor or nyu?

Well I think Baylor is the right school for me. It seems like i'll come out a better dentist there rather than NY. Besides I want to practice in Texas. I can get a way nicer place too.

I think you've made a wise decision. Baylor's where its at.

I think so too. So what's everybody doing from now til august? Anyone traveling or something?

Just working and taking a vacation to the Caribbean this summer before d-school starts. You?

Hey all. Just wanted to let everyone know that Bedhead started up the BCD 2012 group on facebook.

just, you know, fyi, someone made a facebook group & posted it in another thread, so i thought i'd transfer it over here:

http://unt.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7859938579

because, you know, basically i'm in love with facebook, and since i'm not in school anymore, i, you know, like, hang out on facebook all day.

..::awkward turtle::..

(great minds think alike)

I dont have facebook! I'm working now, but me and my roomie are going to europe for a month in july. That's about it, and getting some partying out of my system...

So in another thread there was talk of being able to clep out biochem at san antonio. Anyone know if we can do this at baylor.

To my knowledge, students at Baylor have not been able to in the past.

From what I have seen yeah it's pretty much 8-5 M-F on paper but the labs usually cause students to stay later. At SA my wife would get home about 7 or 8 on days she had gross lab. It just depends on how fast you locate everything. Also in dental anatomy you may stay later in order to finish a wax up. Then once we get into the dental course like, operative, pros and endo (2nd yr) those projects will may run you past 5.

Ultimately it will depend on you. Would you rather just stay and finish up or come back later.

Makes me wonder when we're gonna have time to study!!

. . .or when we'll have time to PAR-TAY! :hardy:

does anyone have any more info. about classes? any insight would be good 🙂

i think on the baylor website, you can find the basic syllabus. . .just like what classes are taken which semesters and stuff. other than that, i guess we'll just have to wait to find out!

When we fill out our fafsa, we don't need our parent's info unless we want to try and get the health profession's loan. I'm 22 right now and just want to clarify that for fin. aid purposes i am no longer a dependent. If anyone has done their fafsa, please let me know. thanks and i'll shut up now 👍

That is correct. I would not put your parent's information if they make a decent amount of money, because the likelihood of getting the health professions thing is pretty slim... and then if you don't get it, you have your parent's info provided that could prevent you from getting the good loans (i.e. the one the government pays interest on while you are in school). I claimed myself as independent last year, and it worked out nicely.

Yep toothfairy is right!! If I remember right in the FAFSA it asks you "Cam somebody other than yourself claim you as a dependent?" If your parents can still claim you (I forget what the age is) you may ask them to not claim you so you can have the benefits of qualifying for more loan money in case you need it. Also after you submit you will receive an email with your SAR. This basically states you estimated family contribution (EFC). You want this number as low as possible. If it is high you may need to check your FAFSA again to make sure you have not made a mistake.

Has everyone sent in their transcripts or am I the only one who hasn't yet

I sent my transcripts in already b/c I was not sure when they were due and if there was a deadline. Also to whomever reads this and doesnt belong to our facebook group we are planning on having a get together the week before orientation sometime so I will post on here when and where so that way you can be informed. Also, does anyone know if our gross anatomy final is before or after thanksgiving break. I thought it was before but I just wanted to make sure 🙂 5 more months....................:hardy:

hey one more question...........does anyone know if baylor is going to give us time off for the ada convention since it is in san antonio or if we are going to be volunteering for it. My bf is a dentist and we will be apart for a year while he finishes his contract in san antonio and he was wondering if they are going to give us time off for it.😕

i THINK i sent my transcripts in already (i went to about fifty bajillion colleges, so it's hard to keep track), but in that giant packet of info they just sent out there's an official "due date" for when you have to have them in.

when is the ADA convention? i know Baylor schedules spring break so that it coincides with some convention, but i think it's the Southwest something something something.

What is that giant packet of info you were taking about? I haven't received that yet. I sent my fall transcript to Baylor, but I am still taking classes, so I will probably send the final transcript on May. Thanks!

I got it two days ago, but I live in Dallas. It's just a bunch of stuff you have to get done before school starts (physical, background check, i think you have to take a CPR course, etc etc) along with some basic orientation info/forms you need to bring to orientation. None of it was the "exciting" stuff i've been looking forward to!

Thanks! Do you know a good place to live in Dallas that is not too far from school, but that is also safe?

I'm not too familiar with the area; right now I live in Far North Dallas. In the packet they send you, there's a list of apartments Baylor students commonly live in, so I plan on looking into those. I know some who live in the Lakewood/White Rock Lake area, which is nice and most likely safe; I think that's about a ten/fifteen minute drive east of Baylor. A third year I know asked me to live with her over there, but personally I want to live closer to school. Not as nice/safe of an area, but I think if you're just smart about it, it shouldn't be too bad.
