Official: Georgetown SMP Class of 08

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
haven't seen this around so i guess i'll start it.

received word on acceptance today.
Got my acceptance yesterday. Congrats to you! I'm definitely going...see you in DC in the fall?

congrats to all accepted thus far...if you don't mind can you please post your stats or pm in me...enjoy DC, WISE!

How hard is this program to get into? Is the class full already? Is it too late for me to apply?

just got in myself. pretty excited about it. need a place to live myself, figure i would work on that sometime next month. good luck those waiting to here, and congrats to those already in...

How does Georgetown notify students for acceptance to SMP? Email or snail mail? I've been obsessively checking both waiting for what will hopefully be good news.

They first e-mail you, telling you that they recommend you to the Graduate school to be accepted into the SMP program (then they supposedly verify your credentials before they send you a letter by mail, which took a few weeks for me after getting the e-mail). Hopefully you will be hearing good news soon! Good luck!

I am having trouble deciding between the Georgetown SMP and the BU program. Any suggestions?

do you all mind posting your stats if possible, if not can you PM me?

Got into the MS physio program today.

Anyone want a female roommate?

super neat! 😎

I had a 3.1 gpa and a 33 MCAT

Yeah guys, i have question... I took the MCAT yesterday and will not have my scores until about 30 days from now... Do you think i can apply right now to the program without having my score at the moment? Please let me know😎

yes.

Got accepted about 3 weeks ago. Looking forward to moving out to DC (I'm from CA). It seems like people do housing stuff super last minute over there. I'm looking to move out either July or by the first week of August. If anyone has had any luck finding a place to live let me know how you went about doing it. I've been doing craigslist and apartments.com but it seems like most of the apartment complexes don't even know if they'll have any vacancies for July/August until June! Like I said, I'm used to setting up housing a few months in advance so this has me a bit concerned.

See all of you in August.

I'd also like to get my housing done as soon as possible. If anyone has suggestions, or finds a house and wants to share, definitely post and let us know!

I used this number--> 202-687-7979, which is Amy Richards' number. I believe she is the Academic Coordinator for the program, and she has always gotten back to me after I left a message. Hope you get through.

jamaicandoc....did you get an e-mail stating u'r application was *complete*.....i completed earlier this month and i still haven't received even an e-mail of completion from them......🙁

no problem jamaicandoc.

princessbbn - I never received an email of completion, but I called to make sure I was complete.

as far as housing goes, i'm hoping to get to d.c. early-probably early July if I can. ive been doing craigslist and finding great places but that are available now or very soon, so ill just have to wait until it gets closer to when I want to move...not sure if i want my own place or not, but if someone finds something super sweet and needs to share try me

i didnt get an email either saying i was complete. i checked my status online and actually they scrwed up with my app so its best you call them. i was complete since march 21st and was expecting to hear this week or last but when i called them it turns out my file was sitting in the admissions office for a month and the committee didnt even get it. so now i have to wait 4 more weeks, which sucks.. id say call them.. call the number that ilovescience posted above. i sent three emails and didn't get any reply to any of them.

No question... SMP!! BU's program is an MA, not even an MS and its 2 years long as opposed to just one year, and you have to write a thesis for BU. Confirm with the SMP program and you will save your self a lot of time and money!

just called..
my app isn't in their stack so i'll be contacted later on where my application actually is/what status it is in...

it's in the NEXT stack
a decision will be made in the next FOUR TO SIX WEEKS

Several points:
1. MA vs MS doesn't make any difference.
2. I've heard that some people can finish the BU program in one year.
3. In Georgetown, you have to write a library research paper. As I understand it, at BU you can do something similar or a more involved lab research thesis.

One thing about BU that's different from Georgetown is that at BU the student have some options on what classes to take, whereas in Georgetown everyone is on the same schedule. That's the only major difference I can see.

Georgetown SMP may be slightly better known than the BU program if by nothing else than being the oldest program of this type. When I was researching the SMPs, the adcomms I contacted mentioned Georgetown program immediately. This benefit is intangible, but in the absence of any other real difference between Georgetown and BU, and having eliminated other SMP programs, I picked Georgetown.

UPDATE: Just got off the phone with them, applications will not be reviewed for the next four days because all adcom will be out of office this week....🙁

3.2 GPA
30 MCAT

Still looking for a place to live...I'm a 24yo male from Los Angeles CA. If anyone is interested in finding a place in DC with me, send me a message. Thanks. Good luck to those still waiting...

Hey everyone, just got my acceptance e-mail last week. I'm looking for a studio or 1 bedroom in Rosslyn. Any suggestions? What would be the best time to fly over and look for housing? I'm coming from CA like a lot of you, how are you guys getting your cars over there? Anyways, good luck to everyone still waiting, and hope to see you guys there. I think we're in for a crazy year.

Oh, here are my stats for those waiting. Applied second week of March, was complete somewhere around March 28?? Just accepted last week. Hope nothing screws up with my transcript verification hehe.

GPA: 3.2 science 3.0 (3.9 for last 5 quarters)
MCAT: 33M
Extracurriculars: nothing out of the ordinary, except a cool shadowing spot.
LOR's: One great one, and two that i hope were good.

Good Luck!!

Out of curiosity, are most of y'all re-applicants or first time applicants (with regard to med school).

I will be a first-time (and hopefully only-time) applicant, but I imagine that a large proportion of the class are second-time applicants (maybe more), as many students that get into the program were on waitlists at med school.

This is just my hunch, though, no concrete data.

So does the program set up a mailing list for us all before classes start (for housing and such), or do we set that kind of thing up ourselves?

True, MA vs MS may not make a world of difference, but taking classes with actual medical students does, and to my knowledge, BU does not offer that. A library thesis is not the same as a research thesis, and for the purposes of a special master's, I think that taking actual med school classes with actual med school students is more valuable to the adcom then whether or not your thesis was library based or research based. In my opinion, gtown's program gives med schools an accurate idea of how you would actually do in medical school.

Hi everyone, I just got into the smp and I'm waitlisted at 3 m.d. schools 😕

Not really sure what to do, but the thought of living in DC sounds pretty nice!

just received my acceptance today! still waiting on a few smp's/ other options...
living in d.c. sounds really expensive though...

Hey all, I didn't see one so I started a facebook group called "Georgetown SMP Class of 08". See you all in August!

My app was complete towards the end of Feb, and I found out about 2 weeks later by email
GPA: 3.25
MCAT: 34o

Good luck!

Has anyone gotten their netid yet? Does anyone know if we register for classes at orientation, or if we are supposed to do that before we get there. I'll ask, but I'm wondering if anyone happens to know.

I'd like to know that too. I haven't received any information, but I'm guessing we register officially for classes after we get there. I'd like to get my netid, but I don't know if that's also not until August....

Yeah, I haven't heard anything from the actual SMP program about when we get our net id's, when we register, etc. I sent in my intent ro register for the grad school but I haven't heard a word from the actual SMP program. I figured that we just take care of registration and everything during orientation, but I'd like some kind of confirmation.

Here are my stats (for the people that have asked)

3.38 cum GPA
3.0 science
32o on MCAT

I also have extensive research and clinical experience, as well as some good letters. Probably played a role in my acceptance.

Also, I will be a first time applicant to medical school, applying for matriculation fall 2008 (so applying the cycle that's starting in 3 weeks). Hoping to get in somewhere. I really can't afford to go through the process again.

I'll be moving out sometime late July/early August. Anyone want to meet up for drinks before school starts? Just PM me

MA vs MS doesn't matter, especially if your end goal is an MD or DO. You actually do take classes with med students in the BU program. (Other programs that do this include U of Ohio, U of Cinncinati, Eastern Virg. Medical College) At BU students have a choice to do a library or laboratory thesis. Doing the laboratory thesis takes an extra year. From what I've heard, a large proportion of the students take two years to do the BU SMP.

So, here are the reasons why I chose the Gtown SMP.

1. 1 year program. BU is 2 years (for most students) as is Drexel (if you want the masters)

2. Oldest, most known, most respected SMP program.

3. The curriculum kicks ass. It actually looks like what a first year medical school curriculum looks like (minus gross anatomy). Plus, the modified block schedule seems appealing to me.

4. You get an MS (as I said before, even though this doesn't really matter for someone going for an MD, I still liked the idea of getting an actual MS in Physiology as opposed to something abstract like an MA in "medical sciences")

5. It's Georgetown

6. Washington DC

7. My interactions with the people that run the SMP program. Nothing but positive and helpful. If you're still waiting to hear back from them, be patient. From what I heard, they received well over 1,000 applications this year for the 140 spots. I think that's way more than they have ever received before, so be patient.

8. It's Georgetown

Again, if anyone has any questions or whatever please feel free to message me.

I'm going to go visit Georgetown and check out stuff tomorrow, so I'll ask them about when we get more registration info, etc.

Hi all,

You don't need to worry about registering for classes. Ms. Cabiness takes care of that for you.

You will get an opportunity to get your NetID either over the summer, or at orientation (if you didn't get it over the summer.)

I'd like to know that too. I haven't received any information, but I'm guessing we register officially for classes after we get there. I'd like to get my netid, but I don't know if that's also not until August....
