Official: Georgetown SMP Class of 08

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got an email on Friday telling me that I was placed on the 'highly competitive waitlist'; the explanation went like this:

"If you are receiving this email, your file has been placed on the highly competitive waitlist. What this means is that as we continue to fill our remaining seats this summer, you stand a good chance of receiving an acceptance."

I have an acceptance to Penn's Special Sciences program, and I think it's better to boost my BCPM GPA first. I haven't committed yet, though; but I am thinking of telling them to keep me on the waitlist because I honestly haven't 100% decided between the merits of the post-bac vs the SMP, though I am leaning very strongly towards the post-bac (due to financial considerations).

I got my netID today.

// unrelated: Are there forms that I may be forgetting to fill out?

i got this email last week also.. i replied asking them to keep me in consideration but asked what the timeline would be like.. they said it can be anytime up until classes start.. =/

heard from a friend of mine that about 5 people got in off the waitlist the year he did the program. that's not many. which means unless you're on the competitive side of the list, there's not much chance of getting in. best of luck to everyone. i'll probably end up reapplying and waiting a whole nother year. sucks because i know a 19-year old that graduated when i first started my undergrad, is now 23, has finished med school and is starting her residency... here i am at 24 and still waiting to get in... *sigh* never give up never surrender!!! best of luck to all!

Got an email today saying that I got moved off the waitlist into a spot in the program. So now I have a dilemma... Post-bac or SMP? Heh...

go post-bacc! makes room for more of us 😀 haha... but really, if my science gpa was low and i was trying to get that up, i'd do the post-bacc because the smp doesn't change your gpa, just gives adcom another science gpa to look at... and because smp is tougher, you have a greater chance of doing worse... which is horrifying. post-baccs are generally tougher to get into (in my experience)... so congrats 🙂

Is anyones access+ working to see your financial info? Aren't we supposed to be able to pay the tuition from that site? I can't seem to get anything on my access+ account.

What's the % of G-town SMPers that get into G-town medical school the following year? What kind of grades do you need? Is it a guarantee? Do you need other things, such as extracurriculars and medical exposure?

this is the general trend: students with a 3.7 in the program get an interview with gtown 99% of the time. around 25 smp'ers get in each year. there is no guarantee. people with 4.0's in the program have been rejected post-interview.

it does seem like factors other than gpa come into play to decide who gets an interview. i know someone with a 3.65 who didnt get an interview while a person with a 3.6 did.

aim for above a 3.7 if u want to be a serious contender.

sorry for not following up.. i got a few pms about the waitlist status.
i got in awhile like RoadRunner, but have decided to go with another program. so for anyone in the future, that 'highly competitive waitlist' does seem to pan out.
good luck to all of you!

That sounds tough considering (from what I've heard) that even getting a passing grade in the med classes is pretty tough.

Not really. Passing is relatively easy and vast majority of students do pass.

good to hear 🙂 heard that there always is a number of students who don't pass though 🙁 sucks to hear because that means thousands of dollars down the drain, tough to explain to med schools, and sets you a step back if anything. *shudders*

class of 08! looks like maybe c/o 09 for me 🙁
