So, I'm selling off some books that some of you might need for your classes:

For BIOS E-1a and E-1b
Principles of Life, by Hillis, Sadava, Price, and Heller (ISBN-10: 1429257210)
In very good condition, no highlighting or markings. $65

Organic Chemistry, by Maitland Jones, 4th Edition, (ISBN-10: 0393931498)
In very good condition, no highlighting or markings. $85

I also have the solutions manual/study guide for the OChem textbook for $30, but not sure how useful it'll actually be. Unless, of course, you want the extra practice. Sirinya usually adds suggested book problems to the problem sets for extra practice.

The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual, by Zubrick
I won't lie. This book is kind of beat up, but it does have all pages intact and binding is still good. Some highlighting and underlining inside from whoever owned it before me. $15

I got lecture and lab until Wednesday, then one reading day, then the final. It includes the new stuff. Taking this course in the summer may not have been the best decision.
 
So will this be finals week for all summer classes? Can anyone give me an idea of when their finals are? I keep emailing faculty and students and everyone seems to be lost in finals mode.

I found my current place using the off-campus housing link, but I was under the impression that we didn't quality for the on-campus options as HCP'ers since it's not a full-time, degree seeking program. Do we, in fact, actually qualify for this housing??

HEPS is the free pre-health student group for those interested in any career in healthcare. We're compromised mostly of pre-med, pre-dent, and pre-nursing students but have opportunities available to anyone taking classes at HX. The cult has much to offer. We auction off discounted MCAT courses, sponsor medical school tours with admissions boards, have weekly socials and end of year events attended by faculty and staff, have year-round volunteer events including alternate spring break, and in the spring have a variety of panels with medical students, dental students, Dr. Fixsen, and admissions specialists. This year we are working with some of the MCAT prep teams to sponsor practice tests and strategy sessions. Last year we went to BU, Columbia, Yale, Mt. Sinai, Cornell, NYU, and Columbia for our medical school visits complete with lunch, presentations from the admissions board, and tours from current students.

Other perks? I'm a Texan and will be making sure the BBQ is absolutely delicious.

Which library do you guys find to be the "best"?
 
Quick unrelated question...do we get a harvard email account? Or is it just our pin that gets us into the main account page and that's it? If anyone knows that would be great, thanks!

Ooooh! I did so much research on these last year. From experience - Lamont, hands down. But let me give you a breakdown of libraries and why I rank them as such.

1) Lamont Library - relatively clean and quiet. Cozy chairs, nice lighting (if working) in the study rooms, cafe with coffee and snacks. Can always find a place in the stacks if you want extra privacy.
2) Fine Arts Library, Loeb Music, and Yenching libraries - all good for study space, carrels are limited to people in graduate studies. I only go here if I don't mind sharing space or it is late. Limited hours.
3) Widener - the most gorgeous library ever BUT no food/drink and certainly no noise. Unzipping your backpack is like detonating an atomic bomb. Everyone will stare. Can reserve carrels. I've put in my request already.
4) Cabot - smells like undergrads, carrels on a first come first serve basis, broken lights and group study rooms are frigid. I dislike Cabot greatly.
5) Grossman - meant for Extension School students but very tiny. Good for a smaller space, but not ideal.

Other places where I've studied:

1) The new Panera on Mass Ave. is great! Second story is quiet, cozy, and has a fire during winter. Hello spring finals, I'm warm again.
2) The Law student center. AMAZING interior, fires blazing, comfortable chairs. Only downside is people talking and no desks on the bottom floor, just chairs.
3) The classrooms at the Science Center can be great for group study. Usually empty save for tutoring and relatively quiet.

I am a fine library connoisseur now.
 
According to this page the first step in applying for student loans is:

1. Complete the lender's loan application using the school code: 00215503.

There wasn't a generic lender loan application on the downloadable forms page so I'm assuming this refers to any student loan application from any bank?

If so, does anyone have suggestions on which institutions are I should look into? Sallie Mae?

Yes, make sure you filed your fafsa and you have exhausted all your federal aid options before applying for private loans. You can apply to any major financial institution you would like.

Yeah, you'll get an email account that you can use even if you aren't a diploma candidate.
 
grossman has free printing, making it easily the best in my opinion

Can we still get into the libraries even if we don't have an ID card and aren't a diploma candidate?

Yeah, I tried getting into Lamont, but was refused due to not having an ID card. I do my thing at Grossman, usually. Don't have to deal with chatty undergrads with their ZOMg super hard humanities essay.

By most standards, I'm still an MN resident. I just entered my old Minnesota zip code, and it seemed to work. I think my new Cambridge zip code was tripping it up.

Hi guys,

I had a few questions and was just very curious on the structure and policy of the program. If we are coming from a liberal arts or humanities background, and know nothing chem or physics just yet, can we perhaps take chem the first semester, and an "elective" instead of physics (so we can perhaps adjust)? Science hasn't been my forte so I'm real apprehensive on how to angle in here. I know that is not recommended as you'll have to take physics 1 in the spring, but I'm assuming that's not offered. Does anyone know how this works, if it at all?

Also, what's the policy or issue with a retake? If for example, we didn't excel in physics or chem first semester, can we perhaps retake anything? I'm wondering if that's even an option, and if so, does the repeat grade cancel the old one or are they averaged in?

Input on these issues would be immensely helpful, and thank you to those who already helped.

The first semester of certain classes (phy, chem, orgo, bio) is only offered in the fall.

For retakes: MD averages, DO replaces. You do not want to have to retake classes; it's not a good look.

It's roughly 30% of the textbook problems. Get that one and I'll try to help you with the rest.

Yes, they are, but the resolution kind of sucks. It also sucks when the sound craps out.

Really? I'm pretty happy it's over. In fact, I'm pretty pumped for biochem.
 
Hey All! I have posted on here a couple times... Just moved from Seattle to Boston and VERY excited to start classes next month. I have a question in case anyone is looking... my sublet for Aug 15-30 just fell through and my wife and I (both girls) are looking for a sublet/room/couch to crash until we can move into our place sept 1st. If anyone knows of anyone that has that avail, I would love to PM and talk. I know it's kind of a long shot, but it's definitely worth a try! Thanks everyone!!!

Also... my schedule says Science center B & C for my classes... does anyone know how to get to a good map to find those? I looked on the general Harvard site but couldn't find them. 🙂

1 oxford street is the Science Center. B and C are lecture halls within the science center.
