Declining an offer to interview at UC-Irvine

University of Florida and University of New Mexico

I withdrew from Mayo-Jacksonville, Wake Forest, and George Washington today.

Good luck to everyone!!!

I'll take a Wake Forest! (Hint, hint to anyone in a position of power at Wake...)😀

...perhaps in the surgery forum

So far, these are the interviews I have turned down/cancelled.

University of Missouri Columbia, Drexel, University of Arizona. More to follow...

Cancelled: Case Metro, U of Minn, Albert Einstein, UNC Chapel Hill, Oklahoma, Toledo, MC Georgia, Tufts, Henry Ford, Wayne State, Louisville, Miami, Temple, UIC, Dartmouth, Kansas, U Maryland, George Washington.

I'm sure I'll be adding more.

Stupid couples match. 😡

Due to lack of time and money, I am cancelling UCSF, Duke, Mt. Sinai, Columbia, and Cornell.

To reply to the earlier question about why people apply to so many (as I did, years ago) -- the NRMP makes it very difficult, and at least technically against the rules, for programs to offer applicants a spot before the match. Since everyone's heard horror stories in this department, the tendency is for people to over-apply. This is especially true since anesthesiology is becoming more and more competitive.

Personally I enjoyed interviewing since it gave me an excuse to see other cities, but if I were heavily in debt I'd have preferred to avoid all the expense. What I think would be a great solution is an equivalent to colleges' early decision: choose only one program and apply there first. It doesn't even have to be binding. If you don't get in, no problem -- you still have the normal match. If you do get in, you save huge amounts of money and time. Since most people have a first choice, wouldn't this be helpful?

you can really do it?

Canceling Emory...this one hurts a little bit because I've always wanted to visit and considered going there for school. But I recently decided that personal relationships in my life are more important than the prestige of the residency program I train at. I'm interviewing at less than the magic "10" programs so I hope it doesn't bite me in the butt.

Oh and BTW, the interview I canceled was scheduled for more than a month from now so I hope they are able to offer a spot to someone else.

This can be a tough decision to make, but speaking as someone who did, I can say I haven't regretted it once.

Canceled USC and UCLA. Had long discussion with family and realized that when it comes down do it, I would rather go somewhere I know will work rather than the "we'll work it out when the time comes". Would have been a nice break from all the cold weather.

Also deciding not to interview at the Brigham. Never been to Boston but I've heard that it's just as cold as it is in Illinois. I'm so glad that my significant other matched in San Diego for the military match. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Southern California!

I think the real disservice done by the NRMP is not releasing the numbers/qualifications of those people interviewing/matching at specific programs. We all over-apply because we don't know how competitive we really are for a given program. Thanks to online forums (not unlike this one) we have an inflated sense of what it takes to match at a "top" program, and therefore compensate by applying to a ton of places. I think the "Charting Outcomes in the Match" is a prime example of how reality isn't nearly as competitive as the myths circulating through schools (see the average Step I scores and inter-quartile ranges of Step 1 scores for Derm and Plastics if you'd like an example - not nearly as high as what most of us would think).

Once the programs (they have historically been reluctant to release this data to through the NRMP) agree to release the information through the NRMP, it will be significantly helpful to applicants and programs alike. We all had the same basic information when applying to medical school (avg GPA, MCAT, etc), why not do the same for residency (USMLE scores, class rank where available, grades, etc, etc)?

LSU Shreveport, for several reasons, not the least of which are less time off than I expected and running out of money.

😀 ahhhh, you made me paranoid with how many interviews you were planning on. 😀 i felt bad i didn't have the stamina that you did... hope all is going well with you and its not too cold there...😀

i cancelled lsu too...and all of boston...

🙂 I think the paranoia is all mine. I did end up adding another place a month or so ago, so the number doesn't really change in the end... 🙂

Not too cold - highs today and next few days in the 60s.

cancelling wake forest. even thought its a great program i heard it suuxxxx for single people. there is nothing to do in the town and i heard its an ugly city

maybe or maybe not more and more competitive but numbers of applicants per program is way up and overall numbers of applicants is also up somewhat.

Part of the reason for that though is the fact that there are more FMGs now that Britain has closed to them after the attempted terror attacks there. I don't think there is any way to know for sure how many more US seniors are applying for anesthesia until the match data comes out

Cancelled Univ Missouri-Kansas City about a week and a half ago...

I've gotten tired of flying (and dealing with security and cramped spaces to try to shove your luggage in).

I've been away from home for almost 3 weeks, I've spent the greater part of the last 6 weeks living out of a suitcase, and I was scheduled to fly out to KC only 2 days after I get home from this extended road trip.

Good luck to everyone on the remainder of their interviews...the interview trail is coming closer to an end (finally!)
🙂

St. Lukes, St. Vincents, UMDNJ, and Mayo-Jacksonville -- if you're interested in these places get on the phone and call them!!! G'luk

UNC, Miami, MUSC, GW, Missouri-columbia, Texas Tech, ARkansas Yale, UC Davis, UCLA, and Emory and a few others that I can't remember
