We're down to 4 stars, what happened?!?! Question for everyone entering this Fall: Planning on living alone or with a roommate(s)? I'm thinking about living alone but we'll see, money almost always dictates this sort of thing :(

I'm thinking roommate. Unless I can't find one. Saving money = :) later down the road.

I'm hoping I can find a roommate on housing day or sometime in June.

Yeah true.... i dunno if you guys do this, but I always end up thinking, if I'm going to be in 100k debt at the end, what's an extra 5-10k?

Yeah, sometimes I find myself thinking that way, but the other part of me (ingrained by my parents and their past) is that debt is debt... get out as fast as you can.

which apartments are you refering to???

I have 2 friends (soon to be 3) living in the hallmark house and they like. As posted, a studio is about $700-$850 i believe. The new studios (with newer cabinets) are the ones running to the $800. If you get an old studio, then u might be paying $650+.
I don't have a car otherwise I would move there. Also as for parking, I heard it's $50 a month....so you might want to just take your chances with parking on the streets (watch out for sanitation days).

The people there are quite from what I've heard. So if you want to live alone without paying out of your arse, then it's not a bad place.

I live in society hill currently. Rent is steep but I need the to be able to walk to school at this point in time.

my parents went to parents day and were really really impressed with the school, its faculty, and the students who served as their tour guides! Im glad they loved it so much, as they got to see where I'll be spending the next few years of my life.....they also told me that they were also welcome to come to the luncheon on June 3rd with us, which surprised me, I didnt know, not that its a bad thing.......if this is true, anyone else's parents planning on coming to the next luncheon?

I had a few questions about Society Hill. I've been back on forth about whether or not to live there and here are a few of my concerns, if anybody who lives there or knows the answers to these could help me out that would be great.

First off parking is an issue because there is only one space per townhouse, but even if there was more parking available, you still have to park in the street so I'm worried about my car getting broken into or stolen, esp considering I have a pretty nice headunit and a decent car. Should this be of any concern or is this not really a big issue?

Secondly, I have heard and my parents heard on parents day that it isn't safe at all to be outside at night and that if we have any type of expensive jewlery or watch that we should just leave it at home. Is this true to any extent and is it really that bad? Also, is there any way to get a police escort if you ever need to come back late and you are alone? I'm concerned about this because most of the time on my walk back I will probably be carrying my laptop with me along with other valuables.

And finally, I hear that there are no supermarkets or restaurants in the area which are safe to shop and eat at, so don't you have to leave Newark and drive about 10-20 mins to go food shopping etc? In that case is it that large of an advantage to live only a few minutes from school and walk there?

So basically, how important is it to live in Society Hill and be just a walk away from class when safety is a large issue?

Thanks in advance for the help :)

And about the parents thing I doubt they'll be attending. Also, if you have housing set up before housing day is it still worth going to the luncheon? I was planning on attending either way just to meet some fellow classmates and to get some more info from current students.

very strange...my parents pretty much ran through what they told em at the luncheon, there was NO mention about saftey or anything like that...but ill ask em....not likely though, cuz that would have been the first thing out of my moms mouth.

Well the mention of the third thing about food was during the luncheon, the other stuff was from when my parents visited society hill and while they were there they spoke with some residence and landlords and thats where most of the info they told me came from

Well folks, got a rather unexpected post-interview rejection letter from a certain other UMDNJ school today, so it looks as if NJMS really is my final destination come August.

And I have added a signature to humor all you avid NJMS fans : )

Anyhow, my parents were unable to attend the Saturday's luncheon - I am wondering whether there was anything handed out to the parents specifically for them? (i.e. pamphlets, or other NJMS info) If so, I'll probably stop down at the office there and pick up copies.

I'd let them come to the next luncheon, but I'd feel kinda odd if I was the only one to show up with my folks, heheh. Oh well....

Time to fill out all those health forms. Uggh.

Welcome dbpatto! I for one (i'm sure all the other future NJMSers agree) are glad you're joining our thread and joining us next year!

My parents didn't go to the luncheon, and I'm not bringing them to housing day. They want me to live at home still... and I'm probably not going to, so I'd rather go by myself. :)

Did anyone get info on housing day/luncheon yet? Or did anyone get financial aid info yet? Still waiting....

Sounds like all you guys are finding housing already! I go to school out of state and don't have a car, so I'm going to have to hold off for housing day to come around. Hopefully there will still be roommates out there!

Neither my parents nor I can attend any housing days or luncheons. I'll be coming to NJ a week before orientation and looking for housing...so dont sweat it, your not alone. On top of that, I still don't know if I want to go to NJMS over RWJ where I'm still waitlisted.

Should this be of any concern or is this not really a big issue?

This is an impossible question to answer. Every unit in society hill is different. My apartment has a garage with driveway. Some have two car garages. And some have only the one spot. When the driveway and garage are full, I park either in a visitor spot and get an overnight pass, or I park in the parking deck, which is locked after 11PM. I know of people who park on the street and aside from getting towed on garbage day, I have heard of only one person who had their car broken into/stolen. If you have expensive things in your car (CDs, headunits, etc) don't be stupid and leave them out visible in the car. Take them with you into your house or lock them in the trunk of your car.

While it's not the safest place in the world, I wouldn't say it's "not safe at all" to walk home at night. If you are walking around late at night, then walk with someone if you're worried. I don't wear expensive jewlery so that's not a concern of mine, but if you think it would make you a target, then leave it at home. I used to walk around as an undergrad with my iPod, but I stopped doing it because it makes me a target. I don't know about police escorts because if I'm out late I make sure I have someone who can give me a ride, or I drive in and drive back.

And finally, I hear that there are no supermarkets or restaurants in the area which are safe to shop and eat at, so don't you have to leave Newark and drive about 10-20 mins to go food shopping etc?

Supermarkets: I go home routinely and shop near there because a) I don't like the Pathmark chain to begin with and b)...well there really isn't a B. Even if you don't live in Newark, you will probably end up driving some where to buy groceries, and it will probably take you 10 minutes to get there. As for restaraunts, there aren't any sit down places around campus, but there is the Ironbound a short distance away (Penn Station) which has awesome food and is considered "safe".

In that case is it that large of an advantage to live only a few minutes from school and walk there? So basically, how important is it to live in Society Hill and be just a walk away from class when safety is a large issue?

So essentially what I've done here is taken your concerns and told you how my experiences with living in Newark have addressed them. I like being able to walk to school and not have to fight for parking every day--which is something you will have to do if drive in from somewhere outside of Newark (and recently, they've been cracking down on illegal parking in the lots, so now it takes between 30min-1hr to find a spot if you arrive after 9:45AM.) However, if your safety/security/food concerns are so great, the obviously, look for housing outside of the city. It doesn't make that much of a difference either way.

Hope that helped.

I dont think I want my parents to come to the next luncheon....Im old enough to figure out where I'd like to live and who with if that's the case....however, if they really really want to go, I guess I'll let them :) I've heard parking is getting a lot tougher now that they've removed some parking spaces/lots because of the construction on all the new buildings, etc. Does anyone here know how much parking has been taken away due to construction? And if they are going to add any more parking at all somewhere else?

whats your reason not to come? NJMS is a gr8 school and with a very very competative match list....of course no one is forcing you to attend NJMS, but if you do, you really gotta like accept that its your school, or you may not have a good time your 4 years. just a little to think about.

good luck with your decision. :luck:

I have no reason to not come to NJMS. If I dont get into RWJ I would be perfectly happy going there. The students at NJMS, from my visit to Newark, and hearing from all of you in this thread, seem a lot warmer and enthusiastic than RWJ. Both schools have a competetive match list and I think I would get a great education at either. The only reason I am leaning towards RWJ is its location.

DrOctopus, thanks for your responce. From what you said it doesn't seem to bad and its not as big of a deal as everybody makes it out to be. So, I'll probably just give it a shot and if I don't like it, I can simply move out the next year. Thanks again for your responce.

And about RWJ, is it just me or does it seem like they waitlisted half of the world? They're so rediculous with that that they have 3 waitlist categories. Why even bother making the lower tier waitlist category and get people's hopes up when in reality they have a very slim chance of being accepted? I just don't get it.

Ahh, cmon, the NJMS area is great once you think about it! You got NYC, greatest city in the world, close by. If you dont feel like going there, you can hit Hoboken for some food and drink and fun. If you dont want to live in Newark, the surrounding towns are beautiful, and the commute is not bad. If you want to be right next to the school, Society Hill is across the street. University Hospital is a few steps away, not 1/2 hour away. The class isn't split up during rotations, and you get exposure to a variety of cases with the population living in Newark. What's in Piscataway?? Maybe a bar or two. It's cool if you want to hang out with the Rutgers undergrads when you go out! Of course Im just kidding, but the area NJMS is in isnt too bad...

yo..i called the finacial aid office...and they tell me that i get 26K so far in loans.....im entitled to 38.5 K rite? so wats up wit this??!! they still dont have any scholarship money decided yet....im freakin out here! i cant live at home again!!!!!!!!

is this normal, to offer less money and then get the rest ???

I just got my financial aid prelim statement in the mail today......pretty much got covered for the whole year....but I guess this is based on need, of which I def need! Sounds great now, but I keep thinking how much debt I'll be in, which dampens my excitement a bit. DrGuy im sure you'll get more money too, plus you have some scholarship money coming as well, I wouldn't worry too much about it yet, official financial aid stuff comes right before we start class I believe...plus I heard the financial aid office is nice about giving students more money if they desire

how much did they give ya? the lady told me that they give everyone the same amount........any grants? scholarships? btw..my scholarship is only a 1000..lol...nothing from NJMS...YET...

Hey guys and girls!

So I got something in the mail today..... from the state of new jersey grants and financial aid or something like that... which tells me I'm "not eligible for any grants because I'm applying for a masters/doctorate program" ?! What the heck?! I freaked out a bit and called financial aid in Newark. The lady tells me that that was just something for NJ and that since I'm not an undergrad that doesn't apply to me.

Blue Scrub, the prelim financial aid stuff you got... did it say UMDNJ on the top? Or was it this NJ thing I got that was really screwy????? Please respond to quell my anxiety!

The NJ thing said I basically had zero income/assets also... so I guess it's good they know I have need.

From what I know, you will not receive grants for post-bacc programs unless you are in programs that explicitly state that they will cover you (i.e. MD/PhD). Only option is to apply for grant/scholarships - unless you have incredible scores and high MCAT scores, you probably will end up taking out loans to pay for it all (also, you CAN increase your loan amount - its been stated before too)

my "what the heck" referred to getting the letter at all. I know I won't get grant-grants. I just was confused.... because I'm not applying for post-bacc programs, and that others like Blue Scrub have received letters giving amounts or whatever. I'm asking whether these preliminary financial aid letters had the umdnj heading... or should I have gotten something instead of what I did get in the mail?

UDbiochem, I got that letter too stating that I was not eligible for any grants b/c we're going to school for a doctorate degree, the same one you got....and as you know, it wasn't from UMDNJ, I dont recall off the top of my head where it was from though.....the financial aid statement that I got was from UMDNJ though......was I the only one to get this in the mail so far??

DrGuy, to answer your question, it says I can receive 41k in aid, all from loans: Fed Perkins Loan, Sub Stafford, and Unsub Stafford (which was the bulk of my aid)... I can lower this amount if I wish, if I dont think I will need all of it...this prelim statement isn't final as it will be finalized only right before school starts... let me know what's up with the rest of you guys!

I received the same letter and freaked out about it too. It's from the "State of NJ Higher Education Student Assistance Authority Grants and Scholarships". It sounded official so I got worried and called the fin. aid officer. She said that she overseas approval of the Stafford loans for the NJMed class and that I was definitely qualified for them. Dunno where the letter came from but I'm taking her word for it.

NJ Med pride btw! Been lurking for awhile but really excited to be part of the class.

No prob! Im sure you'll be getting the financial aid statement soon, as well as everyone else who hasn't gotten one yet!

From the looks of this thread as well as just getting a feel for what kind of people come to NJMS, and my friends who go there now, I know our class will be just awesome! A group full of smart and fun people....MonteeC I agree, I'm really excited to be a part of the class this Fall!

DrGuy, yup, just the MD program...OK so 41k is the max? Now I'm starting to wonder if I really need all that much.....would you guys take 41k if you were eligible for that? Im not sure exactly what I'll need as of now until I figure out where I'm living and how much that will cost, but what do you guys think, would you accept the 41k if you got it?

Yep, normal ol' MD program. I don't feel so bad now that two others of you go this weird letter!!! Hurray! Yeah, she told me that I qualified for the Staffords too, MonteeC, in a sort of off-handed way. So I said, "ok, thanks." :)

Our thread grows daily with new NJMSers it seems.

Hehe, yeah I figured it was a formality as so I didnt worry too much about it....you guys almost got me worked up into a frenzy for a second! :)

I'm in too, folks...you guys seem great - hopefully you'll make room for an old fart like me.

I just got done filling out my financial aid forms recently (late, I know, but I've had a lot on my plate). Did you all have to fill out that there "entrance interview"?

Also, I'll be moving from upstate NY, and I, too, am looking for housing, so hopefully I'll meet folks that wanna live together or that can give me ideas on where to live...I don't know ANYTHING about Newark. I do, however, speak Portuguese, so maybe things won't be so bad...

Say hello folks! See ya in August!

that letter you guys are referring to is from the NJ Higher Education Student Assistance Authority. They are the organization that gives grant based aid to people for undergraduate work at schools in NJ. They don't give any awards to people for medical school or graduate school.

Thanks DrGuy! Did you guys get that letter from NJMS about it being mandatory to do criminal background checks before matriculating? Im guessing this is also just a formality, but the letter seemed kind of threatening in a way....good I dont have a record but I feel bad for anyone who might! :scared:
