Allright guys, lets start filling this thread up. any new info. everyone who has picked Rush as thier first choice.

Sincerely,
Your Doc

That would be me. I'm still hanging on the Pitt waitlist, but I'm holding my place at Rush. (I have also been working there, so if people have questions...)

I'll be there this fall. are you guys or gals planning on living in univ. housing?

I'll be there as well 🙂

I'm still deciding about housing. Is anyone else happy that we start in September?

I will have almost 4.5 months of vacation... the longest ever 😉

Come on! There's gotta be more than 3 people that got accepted. Post here, lurkers!!!! 🙂

no kidding! i'm not even 100% due to one more waitlist, but there have to be more rush people out there!! as for housing, i've already signed my lease at center court gardens (univ housing).

just found out i got off the waitlist!!! i am fired up

lordofthefries -- yeah, more rush peeps!!! i'm still hanging on the pitt waitlist, but for my own sanity, i'm thinking as if it's "rush or bust." after all, i do love it there. so, yeah, i'm with you about being excited!! so where are you from? what school? thinking univ housing? etc...

One more addition to the thread! yay

Congrats 🙂

hey, thanks so much

haven't done much thought about housing yet (it's been almost 2 days since i heard and the news still hasn't sunk in...). whatever i end up doing though i'm coming from new york and am definitly excited about not paying $1200 for a shoebox anymore

i can't wait to start, god i am so excited

What third of the waitlist were you in? My friend is in the middle third.. I dunno if they'll be going that deep this year.

New York is a fun place. You'll like Chicago too! 🙂

i was in the top 3rd... yeah i guess it varies so much year to year so it's so hard to tell. good luck to your friend though!!!

i'm actually from chicago (grew up in evanston) and am really excited to get back...

it's going to be hard to study with the cubs in the playoffs

yeah! we're happy just to find another rush person, but added bonus - you're a native chicagoan! i lived in westmont for a while and my rent was about $600/month. unreal... obviously the city is more, but it beats nyc hands down (cost-wise).

anybody else? there has to be somebody.....

hey quick question

i just got the formal admission letter, and it mentioned that they want "final copies of my transcripts." does this mean from every university we have ever attended or just most recent ones (so they can see spring quarter grades)?

thanks!

I'm not sure, but I assume they still have your transcripts from those other universities, which AMCAS gave them.
So, it doesn't make sense for them to ask for it again. They probably want the transcripts from the school you graduate, which would show your most recent coursework.

i would hazard a guess that you're right - just what's most recent. they should have everything else. although, i've learned that when you assume that what "makes sense" is right... you're wrong. love the red-tape. i'd call/e-mail to be sure. otherwise you'll be dealing with it all over again. i am curious as to why they sent that though. i'm taking my last stinking pre-req right now and i have yet to hear anything. my amcas app indicates this in the "future classes" too, so they know. did you just finish undergrad?

no, finished undergrad in 2002... just finished my masters degree though

yeah i'll probably call to make sure-- might wait a couple weeks though to give the receptionist a break from this guy. in the mean time i'll be road tripping it up to chicago for the fourth this weekend for cubs/parades/hot dogs

I was at Rush today to look for apartments nearby. If I get an apt, I'll probably get one at the Center Court. I turned in the housing form too. I still have some time to decide. I'll try checking out other apts in the area till then.
---
It's too hot outside in Chicago!!

Ok, so as of now, I have officially stopped saying "but I'm waiting on Pitt waitlist." I haven't withdrawn, but I am assuming Rush, this late in the game. So, woo hoooo!!! I'm still really excited. I just with more Rush folks would post. I guess there aren't many on SDN this year..... one of my Kaplan students knows 2 people from his school matriculating this fall. Yet I know of nobody.... whatever. I'm excited! And the temp has finally moderated here in chi-town. Still waiting on that rain. Any lurkers?? hopefulls?? join the party!

and biohazard - you're such a geek, i love it! the inverted rmc probably only makes sense to us, but i got it. go green!!!

hehe.. I had too much time on my hands that day. 😛

Yea, the weather was nice the last 2 days. Looks like we'll be in the mid-80s next week.

There was another thread started a few of months ago that was kind of like an "unofficial" thread for Rush incoming students. It was fairly active until last month. I guess most probably got in elsewhere.

i've heard of a few people from U of I also going to Rush this fall. from this thread, looks like only about 4 people are going to Rush, haha.

i'm actually on the U Chicago waitlist but i'm considering withdrawing from it. i've contacted them many times and a majority of those times they have been extremely rude. even when i went and visited the school i was not very impressed with the students there. obviously they're brilliant but they didn't seem to be the easy going, fun attitude i saw at Rush. it just seemed very competetive. so right now i'm pretty set on going to Rush. what do u guys think: if you had the choice between the two which one would you pick -- "name brand" (Pritzker) or "good fit" (Rush) ?

Hey, i am starting my third year at Rush tomorrow, so if you guys have any questions, please shoot a PM my way, after boards and a nice 2 week vacation, i am getting ready for the long haul again. good luck!

samyjay - how fun for you!! did you mean that you just took boards and are now starting up again or you're starting and are going to be taking boards? in any case, here's wishing you good results... :luck: :luck:

gootard - i am completely biased, but even ignoring the "rush factor," i'd say go with good fit. you'll be so much happier and get so much more out of school. plus, if you are seriously considering fit and class atmosphere (some people don't give a rat's ass and just want the name..), then the place that has it is rush. you couldn't have found a bigger difference. u chicago is really one of the worst as far as competitive students, rudeness, coldness, etc... maybe NU....but i digress. it's a great school, don't get me wrong, but think long and hard!! plus, i was unhappy in undergrad - i learned how important it is to feel comfortable and happy. you'll be so much more productive because it's not an uphill battle to focus your energy on school.

I thought Pritzker was friendlier and less competetive than Uchicago undergrad?

jennben4, did you goto U Chicago undergrad?

yeaa i think i'm pretty much set on Rush. everyone i've met there so far is great and even the faculty is amazing. Rush is definitely a keeper 👍

let's get some more ppl up in here

nope, i went to oberlin. i knew people there for undergrad, not that it really matters too much. i've been back here in the "med" mindset though for 2.5 yrs, so i've been tucking away things that i've heard/read about chicago schools. for the past year and a half or so, i worked at rush. that's why i said i'm biased. don't take my word for gospel, it's just opinion, like everybody else's. so, the things i can vouch for are rush attitudes - students, faculty, docs, residents, patients, staff, locals, etc... that's why i'm so happy to be staying at rush. i've been impressed many times over. and with my job, i have interacted with many PI's, vets, surgeons, the CRC/a.ka. animal surgery (where we'll be learning), radiology (late night CT scanning - Edwin is the master!), nuclear med, pathology, etc... Sure there are crappy things to be found, but everyplace has SOME negatives. it's the big picture and how it relates to your med education that matters. most of the nonsense has been red-tape with IS, construction problems (with our new lab), new grant structures, etc. you'll find that stuff anywhere though. so, if you want to hear rush praises sung over and over again about what a great place it is to go to school, you're asking the right girl 🙂 as you can tell, i've been around. if you have specific questions (if you haven't totally decided yet), send 'em my way.

more rush folks... we know you're out there!!!

Score!!! Good job bloHaZaRd! I'm registered.... It won't yield anything yet, but hey, the closer we get, the more exciting it is!

Has anyone looked at this site? Check out the M1 survival guide.

Found it in one of last year's thread.

Hey all! I haven't been on SDN for awhile, so I'm a little late, but I am definitely going to Rush!! 😀 😀

I know you replied in the previous Rush thread. Good to see you in this one as well 🙂

I registered to the rmstudents site, but it was never validated. I don't think anyone posts there anymore. The only useful thing is the survival guide.

Hey look we're on page 2 😀

Hey I have a quick question for you guys. I was planning to travel to London tomorrow with my brother, but in light of this morning's tragic events we're considering delaying the trip until late December. Although the acedemic calendar says that exams end the 16th, I'm wondering if going abroad during that break is advisable? Or do students typically stay on/close to campus? I was thinking about going from the 17th to the 24th...

Thanks!

I'm sure you won't miss anything in those few days. Those that don't make any travel plans will probably stay close to campus, but that doesn't mean you can't have any fun.

Congrats to all you accepted and going to be attending rush. Hopefully i'll be chilling with you all next year either at rush or UIC. My question is, where is a good place to get an apartment for uic or rush med students? Is forest park too far? I don't want to be on the campus, but i also do not want to be too far away? How about oak park? any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, a lot of people travel on our breaks...especially first year. Enjoy yourself.

I know all of my classmates who live in Oak Park/Forest Park really like the areas. Their commute isn't that bad either so I would definitely check it out.
You could try places like Lincoln Park as well....sorry I don't know anything about areas closer to school, good luck! 🙂

I was thinking of getting a place around those areas, but I thought they were too far. I live in Skokie(20-30 min away with no traffic) right now, and I decided, if I am to move out, I'd rather get a place that's at a walking distance from Rush.

I haven't heard back about Rush's on-campus housing. I really want to check out other areas nearby, but haven't gotten a chance to do that yet. Anyone have any suggestions?

i don't know the logistics about living in any particular area. sorry. i just know that i commuted from schaumburg every day to work and it took me about 1-1.5 hrs each way (normally 20-25 mins wo/traffic). big suck!! other than that, i'm not much help. i'm living in center court gardens 🙂 i'm rebelling against commuting altogether!!

I commuted to UIC for 4 years during undergrad!! Wasted about 2.5-3 hrs everyday. I hate trains so much now... hate 'em!!!!!! Damn CTA , never on time 😡

have you tried looking at the area around UIC? these places are about 1-2 miles from Rush campus. that's prob not walking distance especially in the winter! i was looking at some apartments and condos there and saw a bunch for rent. you might need to get a roomie for some to cover all the rent, but they all looked to be in a nice area and in good condition.

i'm definitely against commute, especially during the first year. you would have to start the drive pretty early to make the 9am class everyday. i'm living in cntr court gardens also! good luck apt. hunting.

I intend to do that soon. I went to Rush's "housing dept." a few weeks ago, but they just gave me a huge folder that had ads for places to rent. Most of them were too pricey($1000+ for 1 BDRM 😱 ) and far, so it wasn't much help. I think the best way is to just walk around those areas and look for the For Rent signs.

I just want to check if there are cheaper and better places than the center courts. If it doesn't work out, I'll stick with on-campus housing as well 🙂

Hey class of 2009, I have a question to ask you guys. I am a resident of Illinois and would most likely end up at RUSH or UIC. However I am currently leaning toward UIC mainly for financial reasons. Does rush offer a considerable amount of scholarship and grants to compensate for their high tuition in order to compete with UIC for Illinois residents? It is also to my knowledge that UIC does not offer scholarships and so tuition stands at about $20000 for instate residents versus rush's $35000 or so. So if rush were to offer a good amount of scholarship does it more than make up for uic's 20000. I hope you all understand my question.
Thanks.

UIC is around 26K this year and Rush almost 40K. Rush offer's upto 11K scholarships I think, provided you qualify. If you get the full amount, the price diff between the two is negligible.

Not sure about this but: I heard something about UIC charging extra for a summer or two, whereas Rush doesn't. So the additional 3-4K evens out.

i know Rush waits close to when school starts to determine where a lot of their scholarship money goes so people who get in late off the WL don't get screwed in terms of financial aid. i personally didn't receive any sort of scholarships yet but i know others have. here's a thread with a some info about it: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=178416&highlight=Rush

have any of you guys received any info about orientation yet? all i have gotten so far was the acceptance letter and the immuno form... just curious

i got a Word file in my email about 10 Tips for a Successful Transition to RMC. besides that i haven't gotten anything else either. i've uploaded the file on here as an attachment.

i realize rush has a much later start date than other schools, but i would love some real orientation info. i'm starting to get really antsy! i have, however, gone to check out the apartment, fill out paperwork, schedule moving, etc.. so at least moving seems more real. it's something!

i was thinking of possibly doing a dual MD/MBA, but i know Rush doesn't have a business school and doesn't directly offer an MBA. does anyone know if it's even possible to get that dual degree as a Rush med student? i mean does Rush have a "deal" with any of the surrounding/local business schools that would allow someone to do this? probably not but just curious
