Happy New Year to you all!!

I thought Baylor would match any other school's scholarship offer to any student accepted there, don't they?

I was filling my FAFSA yesterday and I could not find the school code for Paul Foster, does anyone knows it?

I see students are trying to decide between Texas A&M, UTMB Galveston, Baylor and Texas Tech El Paso, but, is anyone debating between UTSW and Paul Foster? It seems to me that UTMB, Baylor and Paul Foster have a lot of simmilarities in the teaching approach being more clinical oriented. However, UTSW and Texas A&M have basic science taught in different lectures and then, integrating the science to the clinical aspect until the 3rd year. What do you think of this? Which approach you think is better?

I like TT-El paso in many aspects and I feel so lucky for having the opportunity to go there. My only concern is that the curriculum at TT-El paso is new and therefore, not as trustable as the curriculum at UTMB A&M or UTSW. In the brochure I received the day of my interview at Paul Foster, the curriculum has a portion that is not even finished. Although I still see TT-El paso as my favorite school right now, this is really bothering me.

What do you guys think about the curriculum at Paul Foster?, about the financial aid (loans) available?, about the professors?, about the P/F system?, about rejecting offers from more prestigious schools for Paul Foster?

What part of the curriculum is not finished? In the brochure they left out the clinical years (3 &4) but they should have given you a separate curriculum that includes those years.

Personally, I am excited to go to Foster mainly because of the new curriculum. I spoke with one of the founding chairs and he said that the AAMC stated that our curriculum is the future of academic medicine. A lot of schools are still using a curriculum based on the Flexnor report from way back in the day. My close friend is at UT-Southwestern and mentioned that they are currently trying to change the curriculum

The new curriculum at Foster is not how medicine has been taught for centuries, but how it has been learned. I really feel that it will do us justice in our clinical years as well as our step 1:xf: We will retain the information much better, and rather than finishing biochem then finishing something else later, we will be constantly reviewing those subjects based on the 120 clinical presentation system where each presentation has 9 subjects we must master (eg we have abdominal mass and we learn immunology, biochem, anatomy, physiology, etc etc about the abdominal mass presentation).

Lastly, this curriculum is not being used for the very first time. It came from Calgary and has been used around in academic medicine for about 10 years so it has been revised and improved on.:luck:

If you really feel uneasy, call Dr. Shydlower or Dr. Tobin. I havent interacted much with Shydlower but Tobin is one of the people who worked on the curriculum and is the last of the group who opened the last medical school in the US (Mercer).

Last note, the clinicals in El Paso are amazing! Since it's on the border you will deal with amazing cases! There is a certain infant disease (ondine's curse) where there have been supposedly only 2,000 cases worldwide...2 have been in El Paso! (1 was this year). There are all kinds of examples of rare and intriguing cases like that.🙂

Soooo.......Do you feel a little better? If you have any other questions regarding El Paso or the school just ask!😀

Yes, definitely feeling better about the curriculum at Foster. Thank you MinerMD.

Five days until the selection of THE school 🙂!!

I don't know if this was discussed earlier or not, but I talked to Mr. Snelling in Admissions today about the scholarship money for accepted students. He said that those who were accepted and did not receive the scholarship are still eligible to receive it depending on two things: where they fall on Foster's list of accepted students and how many of those students who did receive scholarships declined their offers of admissions from Foster. Just wanted to pass that along.

After much thought, I declined my offer yesterday. Hope one of you gets the scholarship!!!

Ummm, I did not expect this to happen but ... I matched TT-El Paso without a pre-match... Did anyone else match without a previous pre-match?? I didn't think TT-El Paso was even matching.

hey I matched to TT-El Paso as well last night without a previous pre-match. did you rank it first?

Last edited:
yea i ranked them last as well...

the bright side: at least we got accepted to medical school.

Yes, indeed. I am actually glad to have matched.

But on the other hand... I can already sense that this acceptance is going to be a problem because it seems that most of those who pre-matched have received a full-ride scholarship... or are more likely to get it while those who only matched will most unlikely... or less likely to get the full-ride scholarship. Based on the Top 20 and the not top 20 rule... I can already see this becoming a problem for the first class. It's one thing if a few get a full-ride scholarship. But having the 50% privileged and the 50% not... hmmm.... I can see a hidden tension.

hehe yeah i had a big sigh of relief when i actually saw a school name next to the "School Matched:" it was a bittersweet moment.

i had an idea that they were giving out scholarships but i had no idea how many until i started reading this thread yesterday. why don't they give all 40 people half scholarships? 😀 but yea half of us are going to be breathing easier than the other half in terms of money. but as long as people aren't flaunting it, i personally don't have any ill feelings. i'm happy for those with scholarships 😳 and it does seem that all the scholarships are gone with pre-matches. it would be nice to have some of my medical school paid for though...

I'm one of the pre-matchers who didn't receive a scholarship. I was thinking about this earlier though, (and this is total speculation) maybe they will look at their list of students now that the match has happened and re-rank everyone to see who to give the remaining scholarships to. On the one hand, it would make sense that those who prematched should be first to get the scholarships, but, on the other hand, it's not fair to those who interviewed after 11/15 and just matched on Friday night not to be considered for the money at all. So I could definitely see those matching having a chance at some money if this is how they choose to do it.

On another note, where is everyone from? Are y'all getting excited about medical school?

hmm that's interesting...i wonder what exactly they're going to do. oh well we're just lucky that TX tuition is waaaay cheaper than other states.

i'm from houston. i am totally excited about going to medical school because it's a HUGE step to finally becoming a doctor. honestly, i'm a little iffy about El Paso just because it'll be a big change from the big city to being surrounded by desert 😛 but there are beautiful mountains and i'm probably just being ignorant about the area so i'm sure i'll adapt. the cost of living is definitely a plus.

what about you, pianogirl0104? where are you from and how do you feel about starting this whole new world?

also, i could be remembering incorrectly but does anybody know about the research project they want TT-EP students to work on all 4 years in med school? anyone have any details on that?

I'm from Houston too! Clear Lake, actually. What part of Houston are you from? I'm iffy about the move to El Paso, too. I dont know any Spanish so I better learn quick! I know every city has its good areas and bad areas and you just learn to be smart and stay away from the bad areas, but I feel like I'm constantly hearing about crime in El Paso and Juarez. I hear the West side of El Paso is a good place to live though, so I might start looking into apartments there. I'm really excited about medical school and to be part of the inaugural class because I think we're all going to get great attention. I wonder when we'll get information about housing and the upcoming year. We should throw a big party before school starts so we can all meet each other!

oh nice! i'm from the SW side and i go to UST, what about you? yeah i don't know any Spanish either... i had actually looked at apartments there just to see what the prices are like and what they look like and a lot of the ones that looked good around $500-$700 1 bed/1 bath were NW of downtown El Paso. i think the spanish class before classes actually begin will give everyone a good chance to get to know each other.

For those that want to look at apartments in EP, I'd recommend:

East Side
Puerta Villa - nicest apt. complex in EP in my opinion. Very well run. Downside - fewer people on the east side

West Side
Colinas del Sol: nice complex, gated, lots of med students live here. Probably the most popular apt complex with med students. Downside - staff is rude and they are a little slow with maintenance.

Tuscany at Mesa Hills: nice complex, gated, movie theatre available to reserve on site. Downside - I've heard some people complain that the place wasn't built well (only a couple years old), wind noise, etc. Most really love the place though.

Otherwise if you don't mind the whole roommate thing, I'd definitely recommend renting a house. It is cheap compared to most cities, and they are all over. My roommate and I live 7 minutes from Thomason parking. To make it cost effective though, you either need a roommate or be willing to live far away from campus.

My understanding from the last time I spoke to Dr. Schydlower was that there would be some element of Spanish incorporated into the curriculum. The first few weeks they were planning on having some kind of immersion experience where we go to local clinics and volunteer there and hopefully pick up some Spanish along the way.

I don't know if that is still the plan, but Dr. schydlower was confident that minimal
Spanish-speaking experience would not interfere with our medical education or success in El Paso. just my $.02.

I interviewed at El Paso and when I found only half the class would be receiving scholarships I thought that was crappy. It doesn't set a good tone for the first class, much less a class so small. They should have just offered everybody a half scholarship rather than half the class a full scholarship. So much for a united first class. I ended up choosing Southwestern.

I guess I just don't see this being an issue, maybe it is because I have been deemed one of the "haves," but all of us have been in situations where other people have more than we do and people who have less, and I would hope that as a group of highly educated adults that this would just not be a problem. I suppose if someone wanted to make it a problem, just for kicks, than they could, but I guess I have enough faith in my classmates to believe that the caste system Cujo suggests will not take place. In a class this small, I anticipate all of us growing very close and having great relationships, and this Sneeches mentality (it's a great Dr. Seuss book, look it up if you haven't heard of it, it is totally worth a read, even when you are over 20) will not cause any problems if we don't allow it to.

I can't wait to meet all of you.

have enough faith in my classmates to believe that the caste system Cujo suggests will not take place. .

Get your facts straight. I didn't suggest it. One of your future classmates did.

A percentage of Lubbock Tech students get a grant every year (me included), and other schools give out scholarships across the nation. It isn't an issue in Lubbock, so I'm not sure why it would be in El Paso........assuming of course that those with a scholarship don't make t-shirts to brag........kidding of course.

Many schools will also give out grant money from MSII-IV, so yall without scholarships may get grant money later.

Lastly, tuition & cost of living aren't high at all in TX. Live cheaply and you'll be fine. If you were to add up the amount of residual debt of my roommates undergrad, his 4 years of med school, and my 4 years of med school together would be.......about $100,000.

If money is an issue: 1. Get a roommate that you like 2. split grocery costs with him/her 3. residents at the hospital will also buy you plenty of meals in MSIII-MSIV 4. get your FAFSA in as early as possible for grant money 5. get part-time jobs (I got a job in derm-path working about 5-15 hours/week. My roommate loves Cinemark so he got a job working every other Sunday or so at the local theatre. Its doable once you find out what is expected of you.) 6. Do your "research project" early so that you can spend months at the end of 4th year working somewhere for cash. 7. Invest if you are ballsy enough.

Those are all possible ways to save/make money during med school to minimize your debt.

Get your facts straight. I didn't suggest it. One of your future classmates did.

If you dont want to come to school in El Paso, then why are you even bothering with this thread? I wish I had that kind of free time. Really, get a life.

MeanGreenMD: I agree that we're going to have an awesome class and we are all adults who wont make a big deal out of the scholarship situation. Honestly, who is going to walk around boasting about the scholarship anyway? Lame. I doubt it will even get discussed unless someone brings it up.

I'm actually at work. It's nice to get paid to surf the internet. I'm not going to UTMB either, but I like to keep up with what's going on at the Texas med schools that are overcoming problems/just starting.

I have two friends who matched at TT El Paso, and they are concerned about the scholarship situation.

I found out I was placed on the alternate list here. Does anyone know how it works at this school since its new? Is it a ranked list? How do they choose which people from the list to pull? Do you guys think there will be any movement or am I out of luck?

thanks guys Good luck to you all.

Hey everybody!

Congratulations to all! I am really excited to meet everyone. If you have a facebook go search Texas Tech El Paso: Foster School of Medicine: Class of 2013. My last name starts with a K if anyone wants to message me on there rather than here.

I am a local so if you all have any questions regarding where to live or anything just feel free to ask. I am not in school this semester but continued working. So, I am up to help and show anyone around town. Just to ease some nerves, El Paso is really safe and what is going on in Juarez has not affected living here at all. CRIME IS LOW! Remember, 3rd safest city in the US with a population of 500,000 or more (That is also a ranking from this year).

You all have no idea what a grand honor it is to be part of this first class. Im getting goose bumps just thinking about it. The whole city is really supportive of us. History here we come!

so i just received my big envelope today. has anyone done the criminal background check online? do you really have to purchase that thing...

I don't know if this was discussed earlier or not, but I talked to Mr. Snelling in Admissions today about the scholarship money for accepted students. I think I got someone's unused scholarship. I had pre-matched at Foster, but was still not 100% sure, until the money came in. That sold me. Honestly, despite the crappy location, I think the curriculum, facility, and faculty is going make attending Foster a great experience!

momgracea, congrats on the scholarship! how did they notify you about it/how did you find out?

For those in the waitlist...
I am in the process of deferring to 2010, hence y'all should look forward to a spot opening soon.

Man, that's a shark move right there. You'll have the advantage of having a class of ahead of you to ask for advice. 👍

momgracea, congrats on the scholarship! how did they notify you about it/how did you find out?

Thanks! I got an email from John Snelling (Admissions Director) congratulating me and saying that I'd receive a copy of the attached of the letter from Dr. Schydlower in the mail shortly.

I had to re-read it three times before it sunk in!

so i just received my big envelope today. has anyone done the criminal background check online? do you really have to purchase that thing...

I did mine on Monday - - it only cost $39 and I got a copy today. I had FIVE pages of associated with no less than 20 different misspellings of my maiden name (Zultowski) crossed to my social security number, along with various different incorrect home addresses (my mom's address, my old work address, etc.) It didn't affect my results, but what a mess!

So, when does everyone expect to move to El Paso? It would be nice if you all can move in at least 2 weeks before class starts, that way we can all do some social events. Itll be good for us to get to know each other, and possibly figure out who we might want to do review setions with.👍

momgracea, thanks for the info! hopefully i get an e-mail from Mr. Snelling, then!

i haven't seriously thought about moving yet. i've just been looking at apartment listings here and there and generating a list. i might move either a few days before or right after July 4th. maybe we can all get together and celebrate July 4th weekend or something 🙂 but who knows...i'm not sure of my moving schedule yet. Dr. Schydlower told me orientation is July 9th! that's crazy early!

Congratulations to you! I don't mean to come off as a bit rude, but if you've only matched at one school, you shouldn't be complaining about its scholarship policy: as my grandmother used to say, beggars can't be choosers! This was the only school I matched at and I too am ecstatic.

The scholarships Foster awards are purely merit scholarships that were used to lure applicants with outstanding credentials to come to Foster. If they were given to everyone (or cut in half so everybody could receive half tuition), then they wouldn't be scholarships but 'grants' or 'financial aid'. All medical school admissions committees have internal rankings that reflect how highly a school would like the applicant to attend.Foster's rankings closely correlated with the order in which it interviewed its applicants. Foster's top applicants were interviewed earlier in order for them to be offered scholarships (clearly, many of these applicants declined the scholarships in order to attend other schools). That's why if you interviewed in late November or December , you probably submitted your applications towards the end of application season (meaning that even if you had great credentials, you probably wouldn't have received a scholarship) or your application was not ranked high enough for you to get an earlier interview offer and be among the initial recipients of the scholarship offers. Medical school admission is competitive and I certainly don't think that those receiving scholarships should have to hand over half of it to the 20 students in the class not receiving scholarships. Shouldn't they be rewarded and not penalized for having high MCAT or high GPAs etc? That's communism (okay, not exactly, but you get my point). I'm sorry you didn't receive a scholarship, but they're not going to change their policy, especially since many applicants chose Foster on the basis of the FULL tuition scholarship, not half, and made financial decisions over the past months that were predicated on the belief that their tuition would be covered in full.

Secondly, many medical schools offer full tuition scholarships to top applicants (Duke offers 10 of them, and I think, if I'm not mistaken, UTMB awards something like 20-25). Usually, it's not a big deal because those receiving scholarships are a small portion of a relatively large class that usually range from 100-150. Foster maybe a little unique because Foster's first class size is so small that half the class is receiving a full tuition scholarship, but there won't be anything unique about it when Foster increases its entering class size to 80-100 in the immediate future. Foster may also have to offer more full tuition scholarships than other schools to lure top applicants because there's a reluctance to attend a new medical school. Moreover, to echo another post, Foster is going to be very similar to Texas Tech-Lubbock and other med schools, so those not receiving a scholarship will be almost certain I think to receive grants in MSII-MS IV because the scholarships will make half the class ineligible in Foster. Not that it really matters considering how low tuition is in Texas.

Finally, what do you think Foster is going to be? High school? Do you really think we're all going to be gossiping about how other people are paying for medical school? My brother is in medical school right now and he can assure you that no one talks about how their paying for medical school, what scholarships they're getting, or the interest rate on the loan. For one, that's just not something people talk about (kind of like their sex lives), and two, no one really cares. People are adults. When I told him about this, he laughed and said if there's going to be any tension, it definitely won't be about scholarships, but about residencies maybe (although even that is unlikely; according to him, IF there's going to be tension, it's probably going to be of the sort that leads to significant others [hey, blame it on the stress of med school]; okay I'm getting side-tracked!) Anyway, I'm excited to meet all of you!

wowee that was a long post 😛 welcome to SDN, dallasgirl, and congrats on the match!! i think most of us aren't generating any hostility with the whole 50/50 scholarship thing, but those who are could take a look at the points in your grand entrance 😉. i'd much rather be going to a non-competitive atmosphere when i go to medical school. i'm soooo hoping that all 40 of us will be like family 😍 rather than competition to each other. not only are we starting medical school together, but we're kicking off this new school together. we can't go off showing everyone we're holding knives to each others' throats.

I am so excited to meet all of you. dallasgirl, you said it, we are all going to great friends, and there is no reason, like marveloush said, that this shouldn't be a very non-competitive environment. I am a very competitive person on the football field or the basketball court, but when it comes to the classroom, especially this early in the school's life, it is important that we all work together to make sure that Foster's first class has a 100% Pass Rate and the ranks really high in Step 1 scores in a couple of years. I know that we all got into medical school because we are dedicated to making this a success. I know that Dr. Schydlower and the rest of the faculty are dedicated to our success, and there is no reason in my mind why a few years down the road, Foster can't be one of the better up and coming schools. I get so excited every time I start talking about this. I can't wait!!!!

WHOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

welcome to SDN Houston MD and congrats on the match!!! i'm from Houston too and i'm going to be graduating UST in May. can't wait to finally learn something relevant 😛

Hey Marvoloush! Did you join our super awesome group on facebook???😎 By the way, read this newsletter from the dean...

I’m excited to share that we have filled the charter class of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. These 40 students, selected from over 2500 applicants, include 36 students from Texas who were highly ranked by the Admissions Committee, including nine from El Paso. Also highly ranked are four students from out-of-state. On February 1, 2009, the Texas Medical and Dental School Application Service publicly released the results of the student match with the TTUHSC Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. The first class will begin its medical studies on July 9, 2009.

These students’ undergraduate universities include Texas Tech, University of Texas (Austin, El Paso, San Antonio, Dallas, Arlington, Brownsville, Permian Basin), Sul Ross, the University of Houston, University of Michigan, Rensselaear, Princeton, Baylor, Emory, Rice, Johns Hopkins and Harvard.

Congratulations to our future students and kudos to the Admissions Committee, which did an outstanding job of selecting these candidates. And thank you to the generous donors in our region who have provided many in our charter class with scholarships.

Im excited! We have a real diverse and bright group coming from all over the country.👍

That's pretty awesome Miner! Where did you find the newsletter? I feel so privileged to be counted among those accepted and can't wait to meet all of you! 😀

my school wasn't mentioned 😛

For those in the waitlist...
I am in the process of deferring to 2010, hence y'all should look forward to a spot opening soon.

000777 thank you very much for sharing this information. I have matched with the Paul Foster school of medicine and I am still thinking of a decision in this regard. My situation is probably unique among the students who matched and are posting on this thread. I am working now as a postdoctoral fellow in houston and I am heavily involved in research projects that seemingly will not end soon.

So just in case, is deferring the acceptance until the enxt year possible? And if so, how can it be done?

The deferral is on a case by case basis.
I will admit that mine was accepted. But I will say that it better be a very good reason.

Thanks for the info. How did you start the request? Did you email or call and who?

Thanks again.
