Official U of T Pharmacy Waitlist Movement '08

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone =)

I got the phone call from the pharmacy admissions office today and got off the dreadful waitlist. This is good news to those still on the waitlist since I was contacted a lot earlier than the anticipated date (July 31st), meaning that it is likely that more spaces will become available. Best of luck and see you all in the fall! 😀

Congrats luso. I got the call today too so I guess I`ll see you in September. They got to the waitlist way faster than I thought they would which was an awesome surprise. I`m not sure that early news is either good or bad for those who haven`t heard though. The initial offers expired Friday the 11th so it only makes sense they`d get to the waitlist as soon as possible. Good luck to everyone else.

you guys must be on the upper half of the list?

Yeah the wait-list might be moving faster because I believe more students are considering UWaterloo for their pharmacy co-op program.

Congrats to those who got in btw🙂!

While I think Waterloo is an excellent university (both of my cousins went there), I'm sad to see people mistakenly viewing UofT as some big evil university full of anti-social nerds. I think you will receive outstanding education at both universities.

I found out on Monday that I was taken, and sent in my acceptance today. I was told that I was on the upper half of the waiting list, hopefully this helps people out that are still waiting!

Any suggestions on where to go for loans and funding to finance the program? I'm slowly shifting from the "am I getting in" to "how am I going to do this" mindset and recommendations are definitely more than welcome

OSAP and UTAPS. If you don't receive enough from these programs, you can always apply for Scotiabank Professional Line of Credit, it's pretty good I hear.

That's a very good point you mentioned xenodragon - I think as Waterloo is also becoming more established, fewer students are having doubts about a new program and the associated "kinks" that need to be worked out. They do have that co-op program that is very appealing. Another draw of Waterloo is that many students from UToronto (St.George) who are in their 3rd and 4th years have grown weary of the competitive atmosphere, many are probably commuters from the GTA, would see Waterloo as an opportunity to move out and try it out on their own, since they've "made it" at this point, with a good career already guaranteed (almost) for you after 4 years, it's time to relax a little bit.

Hopefully many students will choose Waterloo over Toronto (I know I would've) and the waitlist keeps on moving along.

Although I do agree that Waterloo is becoming more established, it may take a bit longer for them to be on solid ground as I heard it's still a bit disorganized. Maybe someone in the program can shed some light on this?

Don't forget that every time someone chooses UofT > UW, the UofT waitlist is shortened while the UW waitlist does not change, so it can work both ways. Personally, I think I'd lean towards UofT if given the choice because it's more established and I get to be closer to home, although I can see why people would choose UW > UofT too.

I would not say that the Waterloo program is disorganized. Do you mean that things such as the UT UPS are still be constructed? That's to be expected since the school is new. The co-op part is extremely well organized since well it's not the only program at Waterloo that does co-op. Being a regular student here is sorta the minority. lol. The school of pharmacy has tons of help in ensuring that process is smooth. Yes, the building housing the school is still under construction (blame KW labour strike), but if you drive by, its a GORGEOUS building that will be open to occupation soon.I personally love it that I'm gonna be part of something new and be able to partake in decisions and processes that well, simply put, are not part of an established school.

Congrats to those who got in! Especially after that waitlist! While I decided to give up my UT seat for UW, I'm in no way undermining the UT pharmacy. Just given the choice, I'd rather be a trailblazer than part of an existing institution. Yes that is TOTALLY cliche but that's who I am. lol

Cool, were you recently accepted or are you already an upper year pharmacy student? And what decisions and processes are you referring to exactly?

Thanks xylem and fungikid! I haven't hit the banks yet but am quickly working on trying to get my finances sorted out. I'm already in Toronto so the living arrangements isn't a problem. It's the tuition + living expenses that I'm worrying about

Ok here's another question.
Do you need to do anything special to apply to UTAPS or does it happen automatically if you get approved for OSAP? Just wondering since the application form they have online doesn't really have a submission part.... it seems to provide more of an estimate

You are automatically assessed for UTAPS when you apply for OSAP. UTAPS is only for UofT students; UofT only uses OSAP to assess how much you still need after receiving funding from the government.

Great then! Good to hear it's automatic. Hopefully OSAP and UTAPS will be enough for me...
Another question: Is the combination of Scotiabank + UTAPS interest payments not better than the National Bank of Canada? I haven't really looked at it too much but the thread linked to earlier in this thread suggests that NBOC is better than Scotiabank for funding; although it would seem that with the UTAPS interest payments that Scotiabank makes more sense. At least that's the way it's seeming to me at the moment

Oh wow - yea, I didn't know about that but Scotia is the better choice if UTAPs will make the interest payements.

That's if I'm reading the UTAPS page correctly...

my 2ndary questions are to those who were on the wait-list and got in...

-- what time in the day did they call you guys? (i'm usually away from my home phone in the day)

-- what was the procedure like after they called you and informed of admission offer?

-- did they send you a notification by email or was it just a phone call? did anything in your "notifications" section on the Applicant Website change before the call??

Hang in there taikwon - toronto doesn't require any deposit and seem quite lax about submitting in your decision letter on time. There's probably a good number of students who have been accepted to both schools and are still trying to decide between the schools and are still holding both acceptances even though the deadline for your decision has already passed (for toronto, not sure what the deadline is for waterloo).
The deadline for waterloo was june 20th actually. But they were pretty lax about their decisions too, no financial commitments yet.

I was on the upper half of the wait list. I got called a few days after I got the email message, but for me at least the email was first. I had until the end of the week to accept the offer. After I got the email message the notification's decision results changed from a "you are on the wait list" message to a "congratulations" message.

Hope that helps, I know it sucks being on the wait list. This is my 2nd time around and I'm glad that I won't have to do this again

😀 just got my email!!! (it was mailed like 2 hours ago! haha) i'm off the waitlist toooo!!!

i think i might be hyperventilating!!!! 😱 OMG!!! i totally didn't expect this!!!

Don't give up fellow waitlisters!!! :luck:

haha congrats apple52 👍!

hey apple52, congrats!

I'm still waiting to hear back... at this point I'd rather they tell me that I'm not in, than have to suffer through this painful wait...

I've applied to this school twice, and this is the 1st time i've gotten on the wait-list.... I guess, it's an improvement compared to my previous attempts, but i'm still hoping for the best....

..........keeping my fingers crossed.............

thanks!!!!

😱 now i'm debating if i wanna take the bus and subway daily to go downtown toronto, or if i'm willing to splurge on renting a place down there!!! (cuz i didn't apply to rez 🙁) ITS SO EXPENSIVE! what are you guys doing about housing?!

taikwon - considering they said they wouldn't start calling on waitlisters till august, and have already done so mid-july, i think the waitlist has a good chance to continue moving up! a lot more ppl are turning down their offers! and its possible for waitlisters to reject an offer as well! so don't be too discouraged! u've definitely improved from being rejected to being placed on the waitlist! 😀 proves u have it in you to succeed! No matter the result - PERSEVERE!

thanks for the positive, encouraging words apple52....

regardless of what's the outcome will be for me in the next couple weeks, this ride that I'm going through this year has made me think about my future alot more than ever before. So I think its been helpful nevertheless....

This is a good thing - in the end, you'll probably end up being a stronger candidate if you do not get in this year 🙂

sooooooooo, anyone looking for a roommate??? I`m moving from a couple of provinces away and online apartment shopping isn't very reliable (or so I've heard). and how is the toronto transit system?? I hear its pretty good so how far away could a person live without too long of a trip?

any updates for this week anyone?

ok... then here's a different question....

are the any people left on this site (other than myself) that are still on the waiting list??

if so... are you on the upper or lower half of the list?

i know they said we'd find out between august 1st and early september.... but seeing that several users here have already gotten in and that there has been no activity here over the past week, has made me wonder if admissions off the waitlist has changed.

:scared:

try craigs list! i used it to find a place for me and my roomie! its pretty cheap if you share a big house with other ppl! thats what my frd and i are doing -- we're just renting this unit within a house with other students. and many of the listings are pretty close to the school! try looking under apts/housing and rooms/shared

entering august i can see u are very nervous! but don't be too discouraged, there are still chances of the waitlist moving up. i would think when facing the financial commitments of this program during this month (invoices and all) ppl who are unsure of their decision can possibly back out last minute!

Sooo kool..i got an 8 on the first section of the UTPAT...

i think below 18 is legally mentally ******ed!!!

hmmm 8? or did u mean 18? how many did u answer, how many blank?

8 on the IQ section? I believe there were like 45 questions, were you confident in your answers? Did you do well GPA-wise?

apple52... again thanks.... ur the only one here helping me keep my head straight.....

just curious.... how much is tuition for this year?

i guess ppl don't want to build ur hopes too high in case you are ultimately disappointed... its not easy being on the waiting list~ but i find the best thing to take away from this experience is to understand that despite acceptance or not - you have the capabilities of acheiving your goal (being placed on the waiting list)! and at least u know what you want! many ppl lack that GOAL or DREAM to work towards or don't know what on earth they want in life! and besides, many ppl don't get in until their second or third try! its common for a competitive professional program!

=) i'm saying all this because before applying to pharmacy... i really had no idea what direction i wanted to take in my life! but i find, just like u, this whole ordeal has forced me to really put into perspective what i want to see in my future!

but preparing for the worst - have u given thought to taking the PCATS in preparation of this coming year's application?

tuition amounts to a little over $12k 😱

Hi taikwon,

I applied to UofT as well and I am on the lower half of the waitlist, so I feel your pain.

From what I've seen so far, the ppl who have been accepted are not as active in SDN compared to those from last year (check out last year's similar thread).

There is also a low turnout on Facebook as well. There is already a group created for class of 2012 but as of now, there are only 115 or so members. This time last year, almost all 240 who were accepted had already joined the group.

I don't know what all that means but I just wanted to point it out.

That's a good point you raised there TStallion. I find it very strange that there is such a low turnout of people on SDN or Facebook about their acceptances or UofT pharmacy for that matter. I think most of the applicants active on SDN were those that were waitlisted (no offense to them of course).

To those of you that got an acceptance from UofT, can you please post the courses you took and your cumulative average in these courses. I'm aware that many changes have been made to the upcoming year's admissions process, most notably the requirement to write the PCAT rather than the UTPAT. However, I still would like to know what the averages are like for people that are getting accepted.

I'm about to start second year sciences, and I'm planning on applying to both UofT and Waterloo. I don't have much volunteer experience in the health-care field. Can anyone recommend places to start volunteering at, in order to satisfy the "experience" requirement for the University of Waterloo.

PS: I'm a student at UWO.

i volunteered in a hospital but not in pharmacy departments, although i was able to job shadow some pharmacists there. it's hard to exactly pinpoint what type of experience they want, because there are accepted applicants who did not have experience working with a pharmacist (i.e. myself and onetreehill - i remember you said you volunteered with a nurse?). just keep in mind that they are looking for variety as well. the experience you present to them does not necessarily have to be all health-care related, but it should demonstrate your motivation, knowledge of the profession (to some degree), leadership and community involvement, which can be accomplished by other initiatives you might take at school or in an extracurricular. there's a waterloo pre-pharmacy group and waterloo school of pharmacy group on facebook meant to answer questions from prospective applicants. i'm sure you will get better advice there!
