The ADEA guide to dental school from a year ago says UOP is a 4 yr program even though we've been a 3 yr program for a VERY long time. Not everything you see on a website can be 100% true right? Our school has one of the highest withdraw rate post-acceptance rate at about 75% instead of 50% or lower compare to the other schools.

I haven't done a ton of research on uop, but everyone on here seems to love it. What does everyone like about it other than it being a year shorter than traditional schools?
 
the administration, faculty, and students are all like one big happy family. Its a super supportive, strong networked community that helps keep you happy and motivated to work hard and succeed through your three years. UOP graduates are also well known for their strong clinical abilities and get hired at some of the best dental offices/groups. The location close to the heart of San Francisco is also a plus. UOP is a dream come true. lol.

Every school has its strengths, so please take everything i said with a grain of salt.

I totally agree. When you're looking at dental schools, u should actually focus on the weaknesses and see if you would be okay with them. Of course no school is going to come straight out and say, "our weaknesses are ______", but I think it takes a really good school to realize what their weaknesses are and work on them.

I visited uop when I visited san fran a couple of months ago. Did a self guided tour because I kinda went in without notifying their staff so there was no one available to give us a tour. But from what I saw, UoP really is a beautiful school, with friendly admin, students, staff and faculty. Their research and community involvement look really good too.

Let me give you what I think some of the anti-positive here at Pacific, just my opinion though...everyone feels different about it so take them with a grain of salt and chew over them.

1st, the price. It's rather expensive. You're looking at about 110,000 a year if you live in student housing. Most peple here will have like 5000-8000 more due to rent.

2nd, because it's a 3 yr program, we're on a pretty tough and rigorous schedule. Combining 1st and 2nd years means you'll have to really time manage your way out of dental school here. Honsetly, I am in school from 8-4, lab 5-9 pretty much mon - Thurs, 6 hours in the sim lab on Sats, multiple exams and quizzes every week. It's pretty tiring and we are definitely burning out here.

3rd, If you want to specialize 100%, unless you're a genious with photographic memory, you REALLY REALLY have to work hard to earn those As in the science courses. I personally think it's pretty hard to get As here and I am kind of struggling in school right now. Time is something you DON'T have any to waste. That's just me and a good number of students here. A good number of my OTHER classmates, they're doing extremely well in school because they are SUPER disciplined and they get their stuff down EVERYDAY and they have time to go social every week. So ya, the experiences all varies.

If you want to go here for your education and with specializing in mind. Make sure you're very positive that you have what it takes to excel here and you WANT to specialize in the future that bad that it'll motivate you till the time you're applying to the speciality field. Good luck thinking it that way because they're even harder to get As in. If you want to specialize, you HAVE to ace your science classes....not easy.

Anticipation and self- mangement are def the key to success here at Pacific. If you're bad at either one of those skillz (like myself,) be prepare to fight an up hill battle. It sounds like it's hard...that's because it is. Good thing a lot of people are in the same boat as me and all my classmates and faculty members are SO supportive of us that I can keep on fighting the system. That's THE reason why it's my #1 when I applied. It's a great place here at pacific and I hope those of you who are serious about getting into Pacific will make it.

You have two "3rd"s 😛. Thanks for bringing up the negatives. I already figured that UoP's 3 year program is intense. Really intense.

I come from a school where their MDl program is condensed into 3 years as well... my gf is in their first year actually. I know how busy it can get!! 8:30-5:30 lectures, 1 hour lunch at 12:30. 6:30-12am studying, case preps and studies, group prep, anatomy lab, clinicals, etc.

peerless, it sounds like ur having a tough time there with the schedule and material. I suggested to my gf that she take some woosah time every so often (gym, jog, retail therapy, sleep..., food....) and so far it's worked great for her. Good luck 🙂

hey cgurries: what does your UoP status on the UoP site say?
Is it "review for 7-8 weeks" or is it "invited for interview"?
 
My status has been updated to "interview" on their site. I got the call on Friday.
 
I wonder if they only call for interviews on Thurs/Fridays? It seems like everyone that received an interview, was contacted on a Thursday or Friday. Just my theory! :idea:

Add Tuesday to the list, I just got a call from Pacific! 🙂 Interview scheduled for Oct. 25. So pumped!! I think things just happen later in the day because they are on the west coast (pacific time). They are moving guys, I hope more of you will get good news very soon! :luck:

Interview invite today 🙂 October 21st! They only interview on Mondays and Thursdays, btw.

2 interviews: 1 with faculty and another one with D2 or D3. They can be REALLY long interviews. I will say about 20-50mins long EACH.

obvious we have a smaller pool here but from the location listed only 1 person from california has had an interview call.

what about others who got an invite? where are you located?

last update for which was last week(like others) was the 7-8 weeks to review.
 
I'm from Colorado. I'm interviewing on October 18th. Really excited to see the school, congrats everyone.
 
Hey I have heard that UOP usually doesn't extend invitations for interviews unless the applicant has shown interest in the school by calling the admissions office. I have also heard that most interviews are offered to those who have some sort of affiliation to the school (like a relative or friend attends/attended UOP).

Is this accurate? And if so what would you recommend those of us who are waiting for invites to do?

Not true, I had no connection. I mean....connection is going to get you somewhere no matter what school you're talking about. Just don't be in shock when your connection didn't get you where you want to go.

I don't think any school chooses applicants based on a few calls. Thousands of students apply every year and I'm sure it's all based on your application.

If you call you're almost certainly going to get Janelle, and she's going to ask you what you're calling for. What can you say to that? "Checking my status?" There's a website for that. "Just wanted to say hi." Application chucked into the weirdo file. "I'm calling to increase my chances of acceptance." Uhhhhhhhhhhhh.

If you really want to show you're committed, the only thing you should ask when you call is if you can set up an informal, student led tour of the school so you can chat with a few students about their experience. This would be especially good if you're from far away since then they will understand you're serious about UoP. Of course, this will require you to take a trip to San Francisco, but hey, you can grab a golden gate bridge sweater, some rainbow flags and a sourdough bread bowl full of chowder while you're here.
 
Yeah, that's what I figured. I never call schools, but someone made that comment. I figured it would just annoy them.

HMMM...well i called 3 times in 2 months asking about the HOLD on my app and TANYA decided it was appropriate to scream at me every time.....she was hostile, aggressive and demeaning......
I really like UoP a lot but after this cycle is over I will be contacting her supervisor for a serious reprimand....no joke

Wow....who's Tanya? She must be new. I only know Kathy, Stan and Janelle--they come to our school every year to talk. If you need to call again, ask for one of them...Kathy is always too busy so Stan and Janelle are your best bet.
 
My UoP status has been "On hold" for the longest time.

They are holding it cuz they want to see my new DAT scores. I just took my ADAT on the 31st, AADSAS already received it 09/14, and it's almost been a week! I emailed them right after I took my test to let them know that my marks are coming out, and they said they made a note, but they still haven't uploaded my scores yet!

I really want UoP! It's my first choice! =(

Really? When I called UoP for my application status. Tanya seemed very friendly and kind. I asked her a ton of questions and she responded to all of them.

Going to share my experience with UoP as it might be helpful to others.

First of all UoP has always been my number one. My father-in-law attended UoP like a million years ago and I was really attracted to the clinical prestige that UoP offers. Knowing that I started to shadow dentists that graduated from UoP. It was awesome to see how much love they had for the school and I really enjoyed the upbeat approach that they took to dentistry which included everything from their equipment like an iTero to the way they decorated their office. I could just tell that UoP makes a bigger difference in the life of the dentist than most schools seem to.

Aside from that the dentists stressed the importance of the DAT. I was told to get a 20 or better and be consistent in the sciences. I was upset when i got an 18 in genchem because of how I thought it would impact my application and chances to get into UoP.

After I took the DAT, and this is the most important part, I set up an student guided tour and asked to have a brief interview with someone in admissions. It was a HUGE step in the process and even during the tour, the student said that it's practically a must if you want to go to UoP. My visit was amazing, felt amazing. I was practically glowing with excitement afterwards because it felt like my chances were increased 1000 fold. Both my wife and I agree that if we hadn't taken the time to drive the 14 hours to SF and see the school there would be NO POSSIBLE WAY to even be considered to attend.

Anyway, as of now I don't have an invite, obviously it's the one invite I want more than all others. If I do get one, I KNOW it would have been because of the interest that I showed from setting up a tour and visiting the school.

Do you go to UoP? I was there a few months ago, albeit unannounced so I didn't get a student led tour, but I got a guest pass and walked around the building myself. It was cool because the D1's were cleaning out their stations so I got to chat with a few of them about their experiences. I love the location and the student body of UoP.

Well that sucks. I'm way over in the Midwest and definitely didn't have time (9-5 job) to fly over to SF just for a guided tour. Le sigh.

yeah i'm an international student, so i really hope that going to San Fran for a guided tour to increase your chances isn't the only way to land an interview...
 
I was in San Fran a few months ago and didn't have time for a tour as I was too busy woofin' on Dungeness crab and brew :laugh:

I would love to go to school there though, that was a pretty awesome town.

On another note, I want an interview but I realize my DAT scores are prolly going to lower my chances 🙁
