~*~*~Official USUHS Class of 2011 Thread~*~*~

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I emailed the admissions office and they said they were just about to send out the first batch of unconditional acceptance letters. For some reason, I will feel much more comfortable once I have that in my hand......

They said to expect them starting next week.

hey bubblehead,

1) do think that people are aware there are 2 pages?
2) have you decided between USUHS/ Georgetown?

I was at Georgetown over the summer for research - it is pretty old, but it's "Georgetown."

2) I have not made a final decision as of yet. I was fortunate enough to receive an interview invite from Johns Hopkins, so I am going to keep an open mind about it until I have had the opportunity to see what JHU feels like. USUHS is currently #1 though.

Has anyone who interviewed in December heard anything back yet? We were told that notification would take 7-9 weeks give or take two weeks due to the holidays. Thanks.

I second this question. I interviewed on Dec 8th, and when I called earlier this week, the admissions office said if I hadn't received a letter by Monday, Feb 12th, I should call back. They gave the impression that the letters had already been mailed, though.

I'm applying to USUHS... I have about a 3.7 GPA and got a 26Q on the MCAT. How competitive is that? I heard USUHS was really behind in their admissions right now, that there was a big backlog. Has anyone heard this as well or anything concerning admissions?

I do not know if USUHS is behind in their admissions right now - I interviewed in November, and received notification as expected.

WRT your stats:
(1) Your GPA is solid.
(2) Your MCAT is below the USUHS average by 4 points. Now, I do not believe USUHS places quite as much stock in the MCAT as other schools. A good friend of mine who graduated from USUHS had a MCAT score of 27. However, he also had a demonstrated commitment to military service.

If you have some affiliation with the military, that would certainly improve your chances of admission.

There is no right or wrong answer to this question - your whole application must be considered to determine how competitive you are WRT other applicants.

Feel free to PM me with any other questions. Good luck!

I am on an ROTC scholarship...

Hi everyone!

I'm still waiting for my unconditional acceptance letter too... I got my conditional acceptance/physical qualification in October. I'm a little confused about the rest of the process, maybe someone can help me clear up the ambiguity:

1. Does 'unconditional acceptance' mean that we have already passed our security clearance or does that mean we are eligible to begin our security clearance?

2. When should we expect to get information about filling out an eQIP form? What was the point of the paper SF86 we filled out for interview day? Has anyone filled out their eQIP yet?

3. What level of security clearance will we get (S, TS, etc)?

I emailed Admissions but they didnt get back to me yet... USUHS is my #1 school and I want to make sure I'm not missing anything in this process.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I can't provide answers to 1 or 2. All I know about them is that an unconditional acceptance will be offered once you have "completed" the security requirements - whatever "completed" means. I THINK the point of the SF86 is to expedite the security clearance process once USUHS knows that you have been offered a conditional acceptance (there is no point in processing the security clearances for individuals that they have not yet offered a position in the incoming class to).

As for 3: you will be obtaining a "SECRET" clearance - that is the standard for all officers of the military.

Hopes this helps somewhat.

Hello all,

I got my unconditional acceptance letter today! They said that a packet will follow.

Yeah I am not sure what it is up, but it appears that the admissions office has been having problems returning emails. I have emailed them several times without an answer. I assume that they must be very busy right now. If I were you, I would just call the admissions office. I have been wondering some of your questions as well. I do not want to mess up on anything. But if it makes you feel any better, I have done everything that you have done, no more, no less.

Has anyone who interviewed in January heard anything yet?? I have my physical in two days so hopefully i hear soon...

I was wondering if USUHS sends out rejections on a rolling basis, or do they wait till they have all the spots filled and send rejections in one shot?

January interviews probably won't hear for a while. I am a Dec 7th interviewee and was just offered a spot today. Just so people can keep track, Navy is already putting people on the waitlist.

Anyone know what's going on with the Air Force? Are all the spots filled?

Have you interviewed? I have not heard of anybody receiving post-interview rejections. You might want to call the admissions office and ask about it.

BTW, I'm Navy, so I can't help with the Air Force question either.

Wow, now that I think about it, I haven't been much help to you at all!

I'll call it like it is then: +pad+

Hey, were you waitlisted or conditionally accepted. I interviewed around the same time and am expecting a response soon, but am currently interviewing away from home (and can't check the mail). Just interested as my first priority was Navy too.

I have a quick question.
I called and asked about the status of my application just under 2 months
after my interview, and they said that a decision has just been made
and I've been recommended for acceptance. The lady said they will be
sending out my letter yesterday, but I never got a phone call or
anything.
Do only the unconditional acceptances get a phone call or whats the deal?

I was given a choice between a conditional acceptance in the Army or a waitlist spot in the Navy. I imagine this is the only reason I got a phone call and not just a standard letter.

Any response is always appreciated. Not to mention all you've already posted in this thread and others have been very helpful.

I interviewed on Feb 1st. I ranked Air Force first, and Navy 2nd, but stated "I strongly desire an appointment in this service" for both in my preference sheet. I hope I didn't come accross as non-commital, but as a civilian coming with an aerospace background, both services appeal to me.

So, did you take the Army appointment or waitlisted Navy?

I took the sure bet and accepted the Army slot. Now I just have to get rid of all my USN gear! 😉

I certainly understand your decision, but I am sorry to hear that. The Navy's gear is way better than the Army's! 😉

We'll have to get a friendly Army-Navy rivalry going every December!

I'll bet there's already one in place that we don't even have to worry about - but if you're talking a personal rivalry, you're on! 😛

What if you are on a particular branch scholarship already? How does that work if Navy (Airforce, too?) is waitlisting people?

If one branch waitlists, does that affect everyone or just those who are coming straight up from non-ROTC means?

In short, it affects everyone who listed that service as their first choice. However, only those individuals who do not have a choice regarding their service preference (i.e. active duty applicants, ROTC graduates, and service academy graduates) will definitely end up on the waitlist if they were not already conditionally or unconditionally accepted into that service. Others have the option of choosing an appointment in another service instead of being put on the waitlist (as an1s did).

So that would mean, as a Navy ROTC option, my only chance would be a waitlist and then hope people do not attend...? What are the chances of that?

actually, i think the odds are pretty good that someone will drop out. the admissions booklet says 60% of those offered a spot accept it so those other 40% must drop out between now and august. i think most people drop out on May 15 - when they are required to make a choice. anyone else have any thoughts?......

So is May the month where you are legally bound to serve in the military?

Yes. For all those that have been or will be waitlisted, do not lose hope! There is a lot of movement off the waitlist at USUHS. When my wife interviewed there in 1999, she was told on her interview day that she was interviewing for a position on the waitlist - she was never even waitlisted!

I also think that as May 15 approaches, a lot of the people who are hesitant about military service, provided they have been offered admission at another medical school, will withdraw their acceptance from USUHS.

So, hang in there! Do not be discouraged by all of this waitlist talk.

You are not legally bound to serve in the military until you have taken your oath and signed your commissioning paperwork.

EDIT: I'm not exactly sure when this will be accomplished. If you are concerned about it, I recommend contacting Michelle Thomas, the Commissioning Coordinator at USUHS.

I cannot see how a failure to withdraw your application from USUHS by May 15 would bind you to military service.

when I was there for my interview, they gave me the impression that you are under no obligation until you take the oath at graduation of your respective officer training program. for those who are exempt from OIS, OBC, etc... i don't know. for me (Navy) that means I can leave at any point until July 28 - but I have no intention of doing that : )....

I also agree that many people go into the interviews thinking of USUHS as a backup because they are not so keen on military service. chances are those people will pass on a spot at USUHS if accepted somewhere else. too bad for them and good for us!

Go Navy... conditionally that is... I received a conditional acceptance notice today. Yeah!

I am already legally bound to commission via ROTC.

Bump... any more news anyone?

no news and it is driving me crazy- i just want my unconditional! I got my conditional in like october...I would be patient, but i had to give up my HPSP, so now if I don't get into USUHS, I will be paying for med school...oh well...go AF!😎

My interview is on Thursday. Wish me luck :luck:

Hey, why did you have to give up your HPSP?

I was wondering why the creator of our thread had been so silent!

I've been waiting for like 6+ weeks for a medical waiver. The USUHS people tell me my application was approved by the brigade surgeon, but they're waiting for someone else (I don't have the e-mail in front of me) to give me the final yes.
If the Army is lowering its standards for enlistees, why can't they let in a future Doc!!!!!!
ARGH!!!!!!!!

Waiting is definitely getting to me... Does any one have any news about which services are full? Someone posted earlier that Navy was waitlisting already...what about AF?

Also you guys mention calling to check your status. Is wait 6-8 weeks a good guidline or did you call earlier?

Hey Bobcat, did you go to LCHS? Just a shot in the dark, but we all know the world is small and the military even smaller.

I was told I would hear in about 7-9 weeks, so I went ahead and called after 8 weeks and was told to wait another couple and check back if I hadn't heard anything. They called me about my decision exactly 9 weeks after the interview.

I interviewed on Dec. 7th, and just got my conditional acceptance in the mail. Yeah, it took a while but granted I did call in first and found out before the mail arrived. It took them a little longer to make a decision on my file becuase I wan't able to send in my grades until early Feb. Looks like I'll be seeing you all in Bethesda!

Congrats Fiz,

If you don't mind my asking what service did you get accepted into?
I am wondering which services are already down to waitlist spots.

CurlyDC: No, I didn't go to LCHS (actually, no idea what it is).

Does anyone know how far we can go on the paperwork process before we're "in"?
Thanks.

Well I had my interview on Thursday, I think it went really well. I was VERY impressed with the school and the people there. I'd REALLY love to go there!!! So I guess it'll be awhile 'till I hear something, I guess I can take care of my physical in the meantime!
