~*~*~Official USUHS Class of 2011 Thread~*~*~

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats Fiz,

If you don't mind my asking what service did you get accepted into?
I am wondering which services are already down to waitlist spots.

I got my first pick which was Army (even though my Father was an F-15 pilot). Just so much more medical oppurtunity in the Army if you ask me. I think Navy is waitlisting and I think Air Force fills up the fastest (After the 6 PHS slots fill up) which means I think were going to see a lot of waitlist people coming up. However, remember this is USUHS which has probably the fastest moving waitlist.

Good luck all!

I interviewed there the first week of Jan and haven't heard anything yet. I called this morning and they said the committe have not returned my file. 😕 How long more do I need wait? Has anyone interviewed in Jan got their decision yet?

Also, I picked AF as my first choice. Does that mean I'm waiting for a waitlisted letter now?? I really love the school and would like to go if accepted...pleaseeeeeeee...send me some 😍

If you ranked Air Force #1 and they are full you will be waitlisted however they may call and ask if you will take another service if there are slots still open (this happened to someone else on this forum). Good luck and who knows maybe air force still has open slots.

For those who've already submitted their acceptance form and official transcripts, what address did you send them to? Thanks.

Bobcat: LCHS is/was a department of defense school overseas, their mascot is a bobcat. And, as it is mostly military brats a good chunk of the students end up going into the military eventually.

I think, as Michelle Anderson explained, as soon as you have a conditional acceptance you are "in." Your space is held. You only get bumped from that spot if your medical or security stuff doesn't go through. Even if that stuff gets held up, your spot is held until everything is a definite negative.

Has anyone who interviewed in Jan heard anything yet? I've been calling them every week to check on my status...can't wait any longer  ...please send me some 😍

Hey,

For those of you that have been lucky enough to get acceptance letters so far and have started looking about for housing, I thought I would pass along this rental agency I have had a really good experience with http://www.noahsproperties.com/

They mostly list houses, not apartments or condos, so I guess this more for my fellow married folk. No matter what, they can be a good place to get an idea about pricing for a nice place in a given area of Maryland. I know the area and, generally, their rates beat Craig's List.

Hello everybody,

For those of you who are sure you are going to USUHS and will be attending OIS with the Navy over the summer:

I am a guy looking for a male roommate who is clean/non-smoker and who will be liking quiet for all the studying we are going to do!

I have been looking at these apartments:
http://www.avalonatgrosvenorstation.com/home.html

If we split a 2-bed 2-bath it will be like $1000 a month!

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with this? They look really nice and are only 2 miles from school and next to the metro station!

If you are interested in exploring this possibility email me at: [email protected]

Thanks and good luck to everyone still waiting!

david

Curly, you rock. This is very helpful. With two kids we will need something larger than most and these seem very reasonable.

Hey everyone, I just wanna know......is this going to be the greatest class ever to grace the USU campus....HECK YEAH!!!! I can feel it know, little unwinding time with some sweet Halo 3 tournies and such. Can't wait to meet you all out in MD this fall (or at OBC if your army). I am a true west coaster but lived in Woodbridge, VA for a little over a year so it shouldn't be too bad.

Hey,
Does anyone know where/if I can find either a USUHS match list or match results for the Army?
Thanks

I don't think you will find a USUHS match list out there. The services usually keep tabs on their own match lists, and it looks like the Army is pretty secretive about theirs based on this thread:

Now, you have an idea of how the numbers played out based on information provided in this thread:

Sorry I couldn't provide more help!

Hi, are applicants "unconditionally qualified" after their physical qualification and preliminary security, SF86 submitted at the interview, are approved or after they submit the EQIP? Just wondering what to expect. Thanks.

I am wondering about this too basecamp. Have you already submitted your EQIP?

No, not yet. I suppose I'm waiting on an email from the security office to go ahead and submit the EQIP. I'm 2/3 of the way done and waiting on an unconditional acceptance. Anyone care to comment on their experience with the process?

I have sent in all the paperwork that you recieve with the conditional acceptance but haven't been contacted by the security office about anything having to do with EQIP. How long did it take them to contact you about it?

I received unconditional acceptance about 2 weeks ago and I have just mailed back the included "Acceptance Form." I have still not been contacted by the security office to begin the EQIP system. I did just receive a student orientation packet and housing information sheet. I haven't looked at it yet so I don't know the particulars - I will post about it when I get a chance to go through it.

Army stuff was definitely interesting, anybody heard of or know where to find a Navy match list? In that thread they alluded that there is one floating around....

Does USUHS tell you that you are on the waitlist via mail, email or phone call? or does silence mean you are on the waitlist?

They supposedly send notification of waitlisted or conditionally accepted via snail mail. If you haven't heard anything by the time that you were told that you'd hear, call and inquire about your status. They may just ask you to wait a few more weeks though.

I guess there isn't a set process, as I received all of the orientation and housing information with my conditional acceptance. The EQIP submission must be an step that is necessary but separate from the unconditional acceptance process. Thanks for your comments though.

Anyone else reconsidering attending USUHS after hearing about this scandel that has been going on at Walter Reed. I bet this problem goes beyond Walter Reed and into many of the other military hospitals. What are some of your thoughts???

I think it is being blown out of proportion. In addition they were already planning on restructuring Walter Reed (I think they are moving it to a naval installation). Anyway it would have to be something really major to make me change my mind about USUHS. I know a handful of military docs (all army) including my brother-in-law who graduated from USUHS a year ago and they have great things to say. Its really only a few bad apples screwing things up but such is the military. My advice, if you have any reservation about USUHS don't go. You need to be really confident that the military is right for you if your going to make it and not come out like the 6 or 7 guys who post on here continually about their crappy choices.

There are problems with every healthcare system, whether it is military or civilian. I don't know the particulars - I haven't been to WRAMC since the summer. All I know is that the Army Secretary has resigned in connection with the problems/firing of the commander of WRAMC. As for the BRAC - WRAMC will be closed and combined with NNMC to become the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). That is supposed to happen by the time we graduate (2011).
As for my decision - I will still be going to USUHS but I was never on the fence.

Yeah I here that. I was also thinking it was being blown out of proportion; however, then the secretary of the army got axed. This whole thing could be really good or really bad for the future of military medicine. But it seems that the problem exist in the leadership positions, not amongst the physicians that are working in their everyday jobs. I just wanted to spawn some discussion to see what some potential students are thinking in regards to this matter.

I just spoke with my uncle up at Georgetown University Hospital - he says everyone there knows it is being blown way out of proportion. He says it is more of a PR thing than anything else. He says it has nothing to do with the actual hospital at Walter Reed - just a clinic associated with it. I don't know firsthand either way though- just passing along what I heard. I have a feeling it will blow over just like everything else....

If you want another view on the Walter Reed scandal, check out the MilMed forum on SDN.

yeah - i've seen those.... no comment. well, yes comment- I have heard too many good things from too many different people I know personally in military medicine to take the word of several vocal naysayers i have never met on sdn. and that is all i will say on that subject....maybe. haha either way - I will be seeing those of you that want to be there in August and I will be trying to enjoy it, not finding reasons why i shouldn't enjoy it!

This is the key! I will be there this fall and we are going to have a killer class.

FYI- I interviewed early in Jan, I called today and they said it'll be a few more weeks still... 8-10 from the day you interviewed. Luckily I have Prison Break on DVD to help me through those anxious, sleepless nights. Good Luck everyone.

how early in Jan was your interview? I interviewd on Jan 4th...the first one...I called on Monday and they told me that I should hear back next week. I don't know what takes them so long since they're done interviewing a while back.

I had dinner a couple of days ago with a friend of mine who graduated from Annapolis, and the conversation somehow turned to USUHS, and weirdly enough, class rings.
Does anyone know if USUHS grads/classes get a class ring?

Mine was the week after yours, so i guess i have a week or two.

The wait is killer! I know we are the generation of instant gratification, but 8-10 weeks seems sooooo long! Especially now that they are waitlisting for AF & Navy, once I find out (fingers crossed) it will only be more waiting to see if a spot comes open for little ol'me.

Its enough to drive anyone to the peanut-butter cup ice cream! lol

when did you interview curlydc???

I interviewed the 2nd of Feb. So I still have a bit more waiting to go!

What part of the country do you hail from lovableDR? I hope you hear soon.

the beautiful sunshine california 🙂

i'm going to call them tomorrow...hope i'm not annoying them too much

btw, r u civilian 2 ??

I'll start:

From NY, went to school in Maine, work in Boston. I will be in the Army. I'm not prior service. I want to do surgery.

I graduated from University of Florida, and in the meantime since graduating and between terms I have worked various odd jobs, and as a psych tech.

I'm not prior service, but looking forward to being in the Navy.

I give up calling the admission office. Everytime I call, it seems like they extend it longer for the decision to be made 😕

I really want to go to this school...is there anything else I could do or just sit here and wait patiently ??? any advice???

I would say calling more than 1x/week will bug them. They understand what we're going through, and I think calling once a week to check in (especially if you've been waiting 6-8+weeks) is ok, but if you call more than that they'll start to get bugged. Imagine if some "punk kid" called you three times a week asking the same question and getting the same answer, would you be happy about it?

and really, i interviewed in december and just got my decision this past week.

unfortunately i was waitlisted... so let's hope some people on the fence decide to give up some spots.

Undergrad at UC San Diego; Navy selection; prior service enlisted Navy; interested in Emergency Medicine, but open to other specialties...

I tried to limit my call 1x/week....but I did call twice this week since they told me to check back next Monday. I figured Mon and Fri would not make a difference....ahhhhh...anyway...i'm not going to call anymore. just sit here and wait...que sera, sera 🙂

which branch did you choose? it seems like the class is full or something 😕

I am civ. Though my dad is career navy. I want to go AF or navy. I live in the DC area now though I say I am from a little bit of everywhere. USUHS maybe a ten-minute drive from my house, so as peeps start heading this way I will host the first BBQ! Thats if I get in, so... hey all of you that can't make up your mind -- drop your spot so they can let me in!

Military medicine can be a beast. However, as some one that works with patient's insurances on a daily basis, I don't know that the civie system is much better! I think it just depends what you want out of your career and work community.

hello everyone - i know most of you are still waiting patiently (or impatiently) for those letters to arrive but I have a question to all of those who have already been unconditionally accepted:

have any of you received instructions from the security office about EQIP yet? they said that they would contact us following unconditional acceptance and that was 3 weeks ago for me....

david guerra > univ. of south florida > bs/ microbiology > no prior service > navy!

good luck to everyone still waited and for those on the waitlist - remember that ~40% of those who are initially accepted end up going somewhere else!
