Hey guys, I’m just starting a new thread to gather up ppl that are going to UTHSCSA during Fall 2007 to discuss stuff like testing out of Biochem, Finacial Aid, Housing, Laptops, Immunizations, and all sorts of stuff.

Here is what I found out so far:

List of shots:
1. Hepatitis B
2. Tuberculosis
3. Varicella (chicken pox)
4. Diptheria-Tetanus
5. Measles
6. Mumps
7. Rubella

“But I do know that the Hep B vaccine needs to be started a few months in advance. There are 3 series of shots you'll need to get for that one. The second is 3 months after the first, and the 3rd is about 2 months after the second. I talked to San An, and they said that all three shots had to be completed by the time school starts. If you've had the series within the last 10 years, you should be ok, so check your records, but you'll need to get an antibody test to prove that you still have resistance. If you havn't started the series yet, I would call the school ASAP and ask them what you'll need to do. Take care! Looking forward to meeting everyone at orientation!”

“When I entered dental school, I paid out the nose to get properly immunized; however, much to my dismay, the school will offer immunis for really cheap (hep b for $5). So if you can't get it done before school, you definitely won't be the only one - and you might save a few extra bucks if you wait and get immunized”

I know that u need 80 or above to test out of biochem but iono if what you test out with will be you grade for that class….so waiting for replies

Good luck everyone!

My understanding from biochem (after talking to a friend that is already there) is that if you place out, you just get credit for the course. And if you don't, well then you get to take it. If you place out, I have heard that you can still sit in on class and take exams if you wish, and if you get an A, then you can replace the credit with an A.

I don't know what is next.

Will we ever have to pay a deposit?

Is there an official form anywhere that stats exactly what shots we'll need. If there is one I want to take that to the doctor's office instead of printing out a post from the message board.

I could see the doctor saying "why do you need the cervical cancer vaccine?" after reading a list found on this board.

Congrats Class of 2011! Look forward to meeting you in July.

Here is the site for immunization

http://studentservices.uthscsa.edu/healthcare&counseling/immunization.html

man.. iono what i had or hadnt...😕 and isnt this expensive? 😱

It looks like I only need the Hep B shots and the TB skin test.

The real problem is finding proof that I've had all of these other shots. I remember getting the MMR shot but I don't know which doctor gave it to me. I think he's retired anyway. Most of them were required for school at one point or another but I don't know how long schools keep immunization records.

I had a Tetanus shot this year so that one will be easy to get the proof for.

The hep b test should be free from school (pretty sure it is legally required to be), and many of us got our first one the first week of school. (People were still accepted as late as May so not everyone could possibly be done with it.) But yeah, they would probably suggest you get it ahead of time to a)save them money and b)avoid a mad rush during week 1. You could also probably see if you can get the first one from the student health center if you are ever in town in spring if you want to get the ball rollin. Ph # is 210-567-9355. The TB test is free, you will take it every year, so don't pay for it. And it has to be read 2 days later so don't plan on going on a Thursday or Friday. AND if you test positive, make sure you go thru the chest xray and all ends of the earth to make sure it is not a false positive (perhaps contact a future Pharm professor) because a 9-month regimen of horsepills (the standard protocol) on which you cannot consume alcohol is no fun, especially at post-gross exam ZIPS fraternity parties and the like. Also, if you are ultra protective of your car and want a parking spot in the garage which'll run you around $400-500, call now and see when the earliest you can get on the list is because they sell out fast. You also automatically volunteer yourself as driver for off-campus lunches by doing that. Just some things I wish I had known prior to July!

I called to confirm that they received my confirmation letter. I still need to try and get on the waiting list for a good parking lot. I don't know which number to call yet.

I wouldn't worry about what you would get in the class with your score too much, because chances that you will even pass this test are so low.

I heard that 8 people placed out this year. I imagine it is difficult though.

well, speaking as a student from Baylor. our biochem had tons of info. there's no way you could come in already knowing all of that. so, why test out? why would you want to skip out on the prep for the boards??

Hey everyone! There's a facebook group for us now. UTHSCSA Dental School Class of 2011. It's a way for us to get to know one another before school starts and discuss anything and everything that needs to be done before orientation. I look forward to meeting everyone in July!

got my hep B for free from a DR that i know. If you know one ask. The titers were pricey !!! Need chicken pox 😛

I am gonna buy a condo and thinking of getting roomate anyone interested in talking?? I want near the campus and nice.

Man, i havent been here so long... so much to wrap up in undergrad.

anyone heard about exempting from physiology? cuz they have that for med students at UTHSCSA?

😴

I'm going to start my shots this week.

I guess I won't have time to finish the Hep B before school starts but I'll have the first two.

man, ive been soo busy... i dont think i can get any shots till like...May..but TexDent2008 says we can do it first week of class... anyone gonna join me 🙂

Anyone started biochem studying?

Can't wait to orientation!!! 😀

I haven't started my shots yet either... I'm waiting to get our packet of information which I believe we should be getting around Easter. I have not started studying biochem yet... the thought of placing out sounds GREAT... but this summer is my last summer completely free before school and I kinda just want to relax and enjoy it. The exam is really hard to place out of... I heard that only 7 or so ppl placed out this year. I think I can do it, but it's just actually sitting down and studying for it... and if I do that all summer and then I happen to not place out, I'm gonna wish I had spent the summer having fun. 90% of the class will be taking biochem, might as well jump on the bandwagon 🙂

yeah, im gonna wait for the packet too....still gotta turn in my final transcript to them after im done with this semester. As for biochem im gonna study mad this summer cuz i think it's worth the whole semester with one class free and i can relax those hours instead of the summer. Moving to SA this summer's not gonna be relaxing anyway ^_~

Btw, are the two laptops we get to choose from the.... Mac powerbook and Dell..something? what are the exact models? I've heard powerbook and powerbook pro 😕

I don't know what the Dell model is, but the current first years who have Mac have the MacBook Pro.

I found out that I need the varicella shots too.

I wish they would send us something soon. I want to know what my financial aid package looks like. I know it's all going to be loans, but I'm curious to see what kind of loans (sub, unsub, perkins).

Check out this link: http://studentservices.uthscsa.edu/healthcare&counseling/healthcare.html

Under "Immunization Record" is a printable pdf of the form UTHSCSA will be sending you in the packet. It tells you what shots and how many you need. An interesting "catch" is that a doctor must sign it to verify that your records are up to date. You have to have this form filled out with the doc's sig even if you show them your original shot records. All shots were available at my university student health center and there is a physician that comes in and can sign the form. Check with your university on if you can do this.

About the varicella shots, you may want to think twice. Each shot was $67 at the student health center. You will need 2 shots to meet UTHSCSA criteria ($134). The titer cost me $24 and only needs to be performed once. I had chicken pox when I was in 1st grade. I am now 26 and still show positive for antibodies as of this week. Go Human Immune System!!!

Does anyone know any decent apartments near the dental school under $500 per month?

Thanks!

I think Bent Tree Apartments and Park Hill Apartments both have rent around $500. They are located right next to each other on Fredericksburg Rd. between Huebner and Wurzbach Rd. about 5-10 minutes away from the school. I think there are some even closer to the medical center, but these are places worth starting your search.

Again I will be buying a condo and will be looking for a roomate if anyone is interested. I suspect that the rent will be about 300 per month. PM me if this may suit you.

Hey... you might try posting on our facebook page and see if anyone is interested. 🙂

they need to send uus some info already so we can get started on things.

got a packet from UTHSCSA!...man... it wants us to get shots before first day of class -_- ....

Some stuff i found:
-list of classes you havent taken in undergrad
-email info
-user name info
-catalog
-shots
-room mate card
-etc

People should get stuff soon.

regarding vaccinations: if we can't find our vaccination records, wouldnt it be cheaper to just have an antibody titer done rather than having all the vaccines done again?

For me the varicella titer was cheaper ($24) than the series of vaccinations ($134).

Can any doctor do this titer or do you have to go to a special place?

Family physician, community clinic, county hospital, student health center on campus....any one of them should be able to do a titer.

I got mine done with the university student health center. I never saw a doctor even though one was available. My only contact was with the nurse who took the blood sample.

Has anybody received anything from financial aid? How about acknowledment that they have received your FAFSA information?

I called and they said that they have received my FAFSA. I heard that we'll be getting some sort of letter or email in the next two to three weeks.

I just checked my stuff on inside.uthsc.edu* and it had a financial aid award out there for me.

My award was a small grant, 8,500 in a subsidized loan, and 30,000 in an unsub loan.

I'm going to accept the grant and subsidized loan, and drastically reduce the unsub loan.

Thanks for the info.

I got another packet from them yesterday with all kinds of stuff.

It looks like the Mac is $800 more than the Dell. I'm going to just pick the Dell even though the Mac is a much better computer. Eight hundred dollars is too much extra to pay at this point. I was hoping to buy an $1100 t.v. if I somehow had the money and I'd much rather waste money on that than on a laptop upgrade. My Dell laptop at my house only cost $800 (including shipping and taxes) and I love it.

I wish that UT Houston would start sending out some info. They have only sent info about immunizations since December.

I also got the packet yesterday.

I was a little disappointed with the Dell since it will not come with Vista (I really wanted the OS upgrade) or the premium video card (so much for playing graphic intense games). However, I will get the Dell as well. I checked out the Latitude on Dell's website and found it has anti-shock features that will keep it from harm if it is knocked around.

Btw, the mac that they are offering will not be Mac OS X leopard cuz leopard will not be release til october. we will be getting tiger.

Question...do we get upgrades for our OS in the future? like 2nd year?

did you all receive the labtop in the packet of information the school recently sent out?

The first mailing was immunizations, orientation parking pass, student email, etc. The second mailing, which I received on Thursday, has the laptop information, biochem placement, scrubs, background check, tech survey stuff, etc.

I now have all of my immunizations done except for the 3rd Hep B shot. Has anyone called to ask what happens if you can't get the third Hep B shot until after school starts?

Got my official financial aid award letter yesterday.

I called today and they said that you can mail in the immunization form without the 3rd Hep B shot and still register, but that you'll need to get the shot as soon as you are allowed to or they'll put a "hold" on you.

I decided to answer my own post just in case someone else is having the same problem.
