wahoo... will be visiting Dallas tomorrow to check out places. Anyone want info on certain apartment complexes? if I have time, I'll see if I can gather any info on 'em.

check out the village ofr me will ya? and how long is the waiting list (if there's one). Also, once you're done checking out places, can you post your thought on here, such as where you went, how were the complexes, neighborhood, amenities, did you get robbed/raped, etc... thanks buddy.

I checked out the Village on MS0 day and liked it and am visiting the area again. Seems like a lot of young people live there. Cheapest apartments I could find too. Only drawback for me is that it's about a 15 minute drive from the school.

There's actually several complexes in the Village to choose from. A benefit of living there is membership into their country club, though I don't know what exactly the CC has. Will let you know, especially if someone tries to mug me. Heh.

yo... I'm here, and awaiting financial aid news. Can't believe it's already April. Should be interesting to see what I'm getting.

hey Jewel, are you considering deferring a year?

So I have decided that I will NOT be deferring next year...I am to excited about med school, and I really don't think I could wait another year...I love my boyfriend and family, but I think it is better this way!!! 🙂 😉 😍

Is anyone considering living at MEDPARK? I know it's so expensive, but it's safe, and I really like the idea of living at a place with other med students...

I will be living at med park 🙂. I know it is expensive, but I want things simple and living next to campus should be simple.

Medpark is a safe bet for out of towners. Maybe after first year when we get more comfortable we can move around.

yippee... this is good to hear. I'll see you in August I reckon.

Where exactly is the Village? (street names, etc) I'm also going to Dallas on Saturday. Will try to check out different neighborhoods for a small condo or apartment. potato, are you staying with someone or at a hotel? You think Crowne Plaza is still giving that discount?

ClearDay - cool, you're in Dallas this weekend too. Go to http://www.thevillageapts.com/index_flash.shtml (the site is a little annoying but helpful) which shows you the directions. Basically you go north on 75, and right on Southwestern. The road curves a bit and then you find the "Country Club" which should have an information center for all the Village complexes there. The Bend is a pretty nice complex.

Other places I'll be checking out: 5225 Maple - very close to school and cheap, though I wonder how safe my car will be there. Jefferson at the North End - because it seems like a popular option for students plus it has an affordable housing program which is a great deal. Maybe Inwood on the Park (man all these places sound the same) if I feel like it. I hear a lot of students live there. I have other apts. in mind but they're nothing special.

Crowne Plaza offered me the discount ($55 - comes out to ~$63 total) when I was there for MS0. I'll be staying with relatives since family members are coming along with me (argh).

One of my friends from Rice lives at 5225 Maple, and kept telling me that I should live there instead, because he feels that MEDPARK is too pricey...I am worried about safety also, though...

Speaking as a woman, I think you would feel safer at MedPark with the additional security. 5225 Maple is in a fairly rough area. The whole complex is gated, but the bus stops in that area can attract some scary looking folks.

I found some condos on Cedar Springs right next to the 'Pilot Institute for the Deaf', between Inwood and Dallas N. Tollway. Is this a safe area?

Well I'm already back in Houston after signing for a place this afternoon. Wish I could've stayed longer in Dallas but the rest of my crew wanted to go back today.

ClearDay, I've been hearing from a lot of people that the Cedar Springs area is becoming a lot safer these days since they've taken down some of the riff-raff housing. Good luck on your search. If you're planning on going back to Dallas in the near future, I can give you a list of some of the complexes where students live that was given to MS0's last month.

You're back in town early. When are you moving to Dallas?
I think you mentioned earlier about area north of UTSW. Are you talking about that area along Lemmon Ave, northeast of the airport or further out?

I'll be moving the very end of next month. I found some nice places ('nice' in my definition at least) north of UTSW between Cedar Springs and Lemmon Ave. You should definitely ask about affordable housing programs for low income people or about UT Southwestern discounts.

I've heard some good things about apartments on Lovers Lane (it comes off from the airport), especially @ Lovers Lane/Inwood. Some random person at UTSW actually mentioned it to me.

Wish I could've driven around a bit more to get a better feel of the areas, but from what I've seen I really liked the area between Cedar Springs/Lemmon between Mockingbird and the Tollway.

Have a safe trip tomorrow. You flying, driving, teleporting there?

i have always thought that potato's avatar is a penguin or a strangly-shaped bird landing a red twig... but anywho, it's nice that you guys get the chance and times to drive to Dallas to check out the place, I wish I have the time and resource to do similar.

heh, you'll be surprised to learn I'm not really an evil tuber.... well at least the tuber part is incorrect. I'm guessing you're in Cleveland still. Are you heading down after graduating?

So I'm guilty of lurking around this thread for a while, just wanted to say hi to all my new classmates. I think I'm moving down there (from memphis) towards the end of july. I've looked before and most places it seems will only hold an apartment for two weeks before you have to move in. I'm just going to work in memphis for the summer...and of course drink some beer and hang out by the pool.

hey dashbddrumr, welcome to Texas and the land of cheap tuition. Besides the obvious, what attracted you to UTSW if you don't mind me asking?

pretty girls in boot, short skirts, and cowboy hat at the rodeo. that's what attracted me to texas.
sry, just had to let that out.

That sounds good to me. also, some family in the dallas area, cousin and his wife graduated from utsw and now practice in austin and older sister is doing md/phD there....not to mention its such a great school.

Hey, it's great to hear an oos person so excited about UTSW! Welcome to the thread!
By the way, has anyone else started sifting through their stuff in preparation to move? I can't believe how much junk I've collected in only two years at my current place. Do any of you have recommendations on what to do with old editions of textbooks? It seems a shame to throw them away...

I've donated some of mine to the library in the past. Hopefully they'll have some use for it. Anyway, that's the best I could come up with.

I've gone through some stuff and decided that I'm definitely packing light.

I'm not sure if your undergrad does this, but a couple of the student groups on my campus collect old textbooks to serve as reference materials for members. Also, you could also sell them on half.com or related sites. I bet there's some poor student out there (like me!) who'd happily buy an older edition since they're much, much cheaper.

The books I couldn't sell back I still have. Just a couple of bio books, calc book, and g chem and o chem. I'm planning on burning this sociology book because of bad memories but all my other books I'll keep because it was a blast.

sdn party at my place in Dallas (wherever it will be) the week before class start (or later), but to get in, you have to tatoo your screen name on your forehead (or just a name tag will be just fine). and afterward, you guys can help me move furnitures and such when we're not so sober.

awesome. Just keep the sour cream and chives out of sight.

I'll bring the sausage.

heh, guess I'm not special. Congrats to the 10%(?) of you that got 'em. I hope you got a big one, Lyricist 😉

Does anyone know where I can find information regarding total tution and other expenses for UTSW? I know I've seen it somewhere...

The email also said that the rest of the financial aid packages are going out starting April 15.

haha...its 10pm here and I checked one last time, oh well. I'm still happy just being accepted. Congrats to all the cool people that got something.

Going back to college to get this one last pre-req (bio lab) out of the way is a real pain. I'm glad med school is only 2 years of academics.

Are you taking BIOLAB right now? Where are you taking it?

I'm at UH taking an evening bio lab, which is irritating since my job is a bio lab. At least the class is easy (except for dealing with whiny classmates).

you did happen to see this in biolab yet, have you?
me in biolab: ooo, we get to do dissection today, yayyyy
me 10 minutes later: is that real blood on my hand? *faint*

LOL! That sux, Potato...Well, at least you're almost done...

I know you mentioned that you've been out of school for a few years...Where did you go for undergrad?

heh, none of that yet in my class. Though you will have to get used to it when we cut into human cadavers a few months from now. And I thought dissecting mice was bad.
