Hey all,

Just wanted some clarification on the matter of oGPA vs BCP in the application process. It's my understanding (from these forums) that BCP is more important than sGPA for dental schools. But, is BCP more important than oGPA, or are they roughly equivalent?

Having a 3.4 oGPA will put me at the lower end of average, but my BCP will likely be around 3.6 - 3.7 which I am hoping might make up for my lower oGPA. Before I cared about grades to get into professional school, my GPA wasn't very good. I've so far averaged 3.7 - 3.8 in all my pre-reqs which has given me a decent BCP obviously.

Also, on a somewhat related note, does anyone know if lower level physics courses (like "the universe") count towards BCP? I'm wondering if some of these courses I took 10 years ago for pleasure/credit requirment will weigh into my BCP or not. I know the math portion only counts towards sGPA, but I don't know how they determine what level of physics, chem, or bio to count towards BCP. Do all BCP classes count towards BCP? That seems most logical...

I'd think that BCP trumps oGPA. From what I've seen, most have a higher oGPA due to grade boosts from easier humanities, etc. classes.

And that physics class will probably count towards BCP. I think it's what your class is labeled as, not the subject matter.

I had a low oGPA (3.1) and a high BCP GPA (3.7) and was offered 10 interviews this cycle, I think you'll be in good shape. Nice work kicking it into high gear when it mattered!

Wow free99, congrats on the 10 interviews, I don't think I've seen so many on here before!

Thank you both for your responses, it's always nice to get some motivation from SDN.

Thanks! I don't think it's all that uncommon, especially when you apply to as many schools as I did. But for me, the few hundred extra I spent on the cycle to apply broadly was worth the peace of mind. Good luck in June!
