Ohio Anesthesiology Programs??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
search AMA and FREIDA and it will give you all of the residency programs in the US.

There are 6 on Ohio. 3 in cleveland, then 1 in columbus, cincinnati, and toledo. I'm sure the one that you mentioned is affiliated with the OSU program.

It's not affiliated with OSU.

It's an osteopathic residency affiliated only with the OhioHealth hospital system.

My bad assumption, thanks for the clarification. Sorry to forget that DO residencies are out there. FREIDA has all the allopathic residencies listed.

So in theory,

1. If I want to go into anesthesia
2. I want to stay in Ohio
3. DOs can apply to MD residencies, but MD's cannot apply to DO residencies

Going to DO school would provide the best chance of getting an anesthesia residency in Ohio?

that is some sexy "logical" reasoning there.

MD, my friend

agreed.

i'm a DO student, and yes, it's possible to match anesthesia as a DO, but it gets tougher and tougher every single year. when considering chances at a competitive specialty in the future, it's easy :

US MD > US DO > carribbean

Also, i can't speak on the ohio anesthesia program, but osteopathic anesthesia programs tend to be pretty bad in terms of training.

Your best bet is to get into a regarded US allopathic medical school and ace Step I and Step II of the boards.

...then you can go anywhere you want.

Thanks for the advice all, I can honestly say that I was not leading in to this question with my original post, I was simply curious if there were more programs than the ones I had already seen.

I still have many years ahead of me, I just like to plan ahead to maximize my potential..

thats a good idea.

chances are your mind will change and change again regarding what specialty you want to pursue ,

but if you're sure you want to do anesthesia, it would probably also help to try and get a volunteer position in the PACU or something at a nearby hospital with a residency program. keep in touch with the PD as you enter and go through medical school, do some anesthesia research, and regardless if you're an MD or DO, do decent on step 1 and step 2, and as above poster said, you can probably do anything you want. good luck.

Go MD.

If you go DO, I would go to PCOM, OUCOM, CCOM, WVUSOM, OSUCOM. Best chance of getting into an instate program.

Relative to the state's population, there is a crazy number of medical school spots available each year in Ohio.

So if you want to go to med school in Ohio, you shouldn't have too much trouble.

Additionally, if you then want to do anesthesiology in Ohio, you shouldn't have too much trouble.

If you want to leave Ohio after med school, as stated above, acing Step 1 and 2, getting good clinical grades, and being interested in your other target geographic areas will get you there no problem.
