I was recently asked about surgical residency programs in Ohio. I then realized I was only able to comment a bit about the Cleveland Clinic and U of Cincinnati (and even then just a bit of what I had heard).

Does anyone have any specific information regarding any of the programs in Ohio? Anything regarding how well the programs are known, operative experience, autonomy etc would be really appreciated.

(Wright State University, Univ of Toledo, University Hospitals Case Med Center and Ohio State were others specifically mentioned)

Thanks!

I interviewed at Good Samaritan in Cincinatti and Riverside Methodist in Columbus. I thought they both seemed like good programs with a focus on graduating good community surgeons.

I like how this thread has 300 views, and only my reply. No one else has any insight?

I've heard often that University of Cincinnati offers a great training program. I've met a few of their graduates. They matched into their fellowships of choice. Their graduates seem to do very well.

I'm probably not going to be of much help, but as far as I've ascertained (this is a few months to a year old), but...

U. of Cincinatti and Case Western Reserve U. seem to be the biggest names, with top-notch academics, good numbers and (as linked above) solid fellowship placement history.

Cleveland Clinic is an awesome hospital, but suffers from having too many fellows in just about every specialty and subspecialty.

I've heard/read good things about OSU, both in numbers and academics, but only the vaguest of terms. Not sure.

I know nothing about Wright, Toledo or community programs.

Wright State

Heavy Trauma experience
early operating
6 hospitals covered
joint with wright patt AFB
>50 residents total
autonomy varies based on service/attending
virtually no fellows (only ICU/CC and they dont do much)

I know of two of the smaller community programs in eastern Ohio.

WRCS/Forum Health in Youngstown: Stay away from. The hospital is in bankruptcy court right now and may close very soon. The residents are leaving in droves (2 last year, 3 this year) for more stable programs. That is a high turnover for a program with only 13 residents! Many of the teaching attendings are leaving too so getting your numbers will be tough soon.

St Elizabeth (The other program in Youngstown) is sort of in the same boat, but more trauma heavy. No threat of closing yet as it is the regional trauma center. Since trauma makes up the bulk of their patient load, the bread and butter general surgery opportunities are somewhat lacking. I knew of 4th years who had trouble with simple surgical skills that should have been mastered in 2nd year.

Just my $0.02
