  1. Resident [Any Field]
Hi. I'm a third year who is really interested in OBGYN (i've already completed the rotation🙂 ). I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their interview experience concerning the Ohio programs located in the cities of dayton, cincinnati, cleveland, and columbus?
Thanks so much.

I interviewed in Cleveland at both programs. I think that you would get good training at either program. The University Hospitals program is smaller (now 5 residents per year), but growing, and they are hiring new faculty in urogyn and mfm. I just love the PD and chair (Dr. Liu, who is super famous). They have a shared Gyn Onc fellowship with Cleveland Clinic. The Cleveland Clinic/Metro program is larger (7 residents per year) and split almost evenly between the fancy Clinic and the county hospital Metro, so the mix and variety of patients is wide. They have 3 fellowships - MFM (Dr. Mercer and Dr. Catalano are very well-known in the field), Gyn Onc (I don't know much about the onco faculty), and Urogynecology (with Dr. Walters, essentially the father of the field - wrote the big textbook). Both programs are strong, but different.

I did not interview elsewhere in Ohio, but I hear that Ohio State is a strong program.

Good luck!

I interviewed at Ohio State 2 1/2 years ago and I loved the program. I thought the hospital was beautiful, the faculty are world-renowned, and the residents were extremely friendly. The only reason it wasn't my #1 was location...I'm from the East Coast and decided to stay here.

Funny thing is, my plan is to go to Ohio to join one of our current chiefs in private practice....

being from an Ohio med school, I can speak on the two Cleveland programs. The people (residents) are much happier at the Metro program than the UH program. I think the two hospital training sites with the powerhouse surgical site of Cleveland Clinic and the abundance of high risk at Metro make this program phenomenal. Plus the attendings are super supportive, the fellows teach a lot, and Metro is the nicest county hospital I've ever seen. The computer charting is fantastic (something UH does not have). I did not even apply to UH, because of the bad rep with unhappy residents in multiple programs not just Ob/Gyn. But things may be changing, so I would suggest an away rotation at both places if you're not at Case, but definitly UH, because you should see what you might be getting into and an interview day will not adequately expose that.

I just wanted to set the record straight on the two Cleveland programs- UH and Metro/CCF. I agree wholeheartedly with bellalou's original post about UH. I am an intern right now at the UH program and moved from California last year to train there. I ranked UH #1 and Metro #2 (knowing that I wanted to be back in Cleveland) and I have never had second thoughts about that order. Part of the reason for my decision was that the residents at UH, a small, tight-knit group with a family atmosphere, are incredibly happy, and I was struck by that when I did an away rotation at UH during med school. The program director and department chair are both phenomenal and supportive of us, the teaching is top notch, the residency itself is smaller and more intimate and we do not have to travel in the Cleveland snow to get to several different sites during the week (as the Metro residents do). We have volume galore. We see a very wide patient mix and all of the attendings -private and staff- know us by the end of the first month because we work so closely with them. I fell in love with the program during med school and haven't been disappointed. Even as an intern, I have plenty of free time to enjoy my life outside work. If you have any questions, feel free to email at [email protected]. Or try doing an away rotation there- you won't be disappointed! Best, Rebecca P.S. We have an awesome call schedule where you get two full weekends off a month all year long.

I'm not from Ohio so I don't know ANYTHING about the state, but I might end up there this summer for an Ob rotation... anyone know anything about Wright State program?

I would like to put in a plug for the Cleveland UH program. Everyone I met was very happy with their experience there and they seem to be on the resident's side as far as how the program affects them (Call qWk and every other weekend off)👍 . They also have quite a few guys. I do think the Chair is also doing some very good things for the program. I think it really depends what you are looking for. I think you could really enjoy residency there. They also have tremendous elective time and are flexible, even for international rotations👍 . And again, everyone I met was very happy. They did seem be rebuilding a program that was previously hurting a bit👎 , but making good progress.👍

I also interviewed at Metrohealth (btw, everyone there told me it is 1/3 CC and 2/3 Metro). The theme of the day from the residents there seemed to be "but I think it's good because..." 👎 As if they really didn't feel good there, but tried to convince themselves they were in the right place. In fact, one intern at the clinic told me "I didn't go to the OR today, and probably won't tomorrow, but maybe next week... and I think it's good because" Also, I got the sense that the fellows are all part of CC, except MFM which is strictly at Metro (not that this is good or bad, just mentioning it). However, the program is prestigious if you are going for that, and seems to have great ability to place anyone in a fellowship👍 . So, again, I think it really depends what you are looking for.

I ranked both programs btw.

I just want to congratulate everyone on matching this year!😀 I hope everyone is happy.
