hi guys I have been accepted into ohio state but don't know if i should go. I have been accepted into a a med school in my town so I could stay at home and save like 60000 dollars, so i don't know what to do. I want to do determatology, do you guys think that residecy intervieweres care where you went to school. i think 0SU is like 23rd in the country. the other med school is not ranked in top 50.

also i have another question, been called to an interview in canada, the plus point is the tuiton is only $6000, it is a good school too and i have an aunt living there so i would live there with there, so i wouldn't have any loan when i graduated. Is it worth it in your opinion. How is easy would it be for me to get a residency back in the US.

thanks

Honestly the ranking of a school doesn't matter as much as you think...I mean you are learning the exact same material, so its almost better to choose a school based on fit than on presumed prestige. Also it is good to think about what kind of doctor you want to be, you said dermatology...that is one of the most competive specialties because it truly is a lifestyle specialty (no call, short hours, high pay = lots of golf), a lot of people are gunning for those slots meaning only the top students at each med school have a shot. There will be guys who graduated at the top of their lower tiered state school obtaining highly sought after slots (likely at their home institutions...being from the midwest I look at KUMC, MU and UNMC's match lists and see this trend). The point is a lot of people consider the big 12 schools to be way out of the top 50 but there will still be ENT's, lots of ortho, some derm and other competivie specialties out of those schools just like the top tiers. And these people have significantly less debt to pay off so that is definitely something to consider. Every allopathic med school in the states (except maybe the one or two with accreditation problems) is a solid education regardless of what anyone on this site says. Go to the school you will know you can SUCCEED at, the ohio state name isn't big enough to carry you that much further (it is in the middle of the big ten med schools rank wise well behind Michigan, Northwestern, Iowa and Minnesota).

I go to OSU for undergrad and accepted for med school. I will go here if I don't get in at Duke, Wake, or Emory just because I am ready for a change. Other than that, it's a great school. As for the Canada school, I would interview there and talk with your interviewer about your concerns.

I wish you'd state where the state school in your home town is or what school that is.........Might be easier to compare the two and give a more objective view of everything.

In picking which school to go to, I'd consider the following.....

Curricula
match lists
tuition and financial aid/scholarships if that is pertinent
type of people there (did the people's personalities and ways fit with your ideals?? was it more nontrad students if you are a nontrad, or more trad students?? etc.)
Focus of the school as it pertains to your own goals, i.e. research oriented like top 10 schools or rural med oriented, etc.??

Exactly.....

Go where you feel most comfortable or if you feel equally comfortable with both, then go for the cheaper of the two.
