-Does anyone think that not having a paperless cirriculum is an issue?

I am not sure why I am hung up on this detail. It isn't going to sway me one way or the other, but I am curious nonetheless.

-And is anyone else concerned about the older building and its dungeon feel?

-Where would be the best place to buy a home in columbus?

I love OSU so far but, these issues are stalling my decision making process. Would you be concerned about any of these in general?

dddsmack, congrats to you for getting accepted to OSU. Personally, it's not a big deal to me that they don't have a paperless curriculum. In fact, I don't know why but I prefer the way it is now. Maybe I'm just more traditional.

I'm also a little concerned about the outdated facilities. But I guess they are trying to upgrade them yearly, and that's alright for me.

I researched it a little bit, and somebody said that Dublin is a good area to live in. I would also recommend areas around Easton though the rent might be a little steeper than other parts of Columbus. Hope this helps.

Those facilities were ancient!! And I also felt the dungeon atmosphere. It was wierd to go from awesome student body and great college football atmosphere outside of the dental school to a kind of depressing atomsphere inside of the dental school. Would I be concerned about these if I were you? Depends on YOU! I think you can get an overall feeling of where suits you best. I know you got accepted at Case and UNLV also, talk about a world of difference as far as facilities are concerned huh!? (I liked both schools a lot more than I thought I would!)

Have you talked to current or past students about the clinic? I've heard they have to do out dated stuff like every post being a custom cast post and core, etc. Just an example.

I think it would be better to learn having a paper curriculum so if you work under someone that has paper charts and the like you will know how to handle it. You can always pick up the new skills later on when you have your own office.

Its my understanding that there are plenty of great places to live in Columbus, Cleveland on the other hand or the butthole of the midwest as many have called it might be a little harder to find a house.

My thought about the old clinic is its for two years and you are saving close to 100,000 dollars going to OSU then CASE. You can buy your own dumby for that price. Most students I talked to at CASE said they mostly worked on heads on sticks (just nicer ones than OSU). They hardly ever used that other machine (I forgot the name of it) but it tells you how you are drilling and if you are far enough yet.

For me I would rather save some money get a great education and be able to buy digital x ray machines, hand drills, and other high tech stuff. CASE will be around 280 k and OSU will be around 160 K, thats a lot of cash.

DDDSMACK you should also talk to the current students at CASE about the mormon and antimormon groups they have at CASE. It does not sound like a great enivironment to me. But Case has one of the best facilities I saw on my interviews.

I did think that UNLV and Case had nicer facilities overall. Don't get me wrong, I am not one of those guys who only talks about facilities. It really isn't that big of a deal. I was thinking more of a classroom atmosphere and spending all day in the dark , no-windowed, basement of OSU. I have taslked to students and it ddoesn't seem like a big deal to them. That is the problem with talking to current students, everyone seems biased towards their school. So I wanted a somewhat unbiased opinion form others in my situation.

UNLV had a nice campus, though secluded from the rest of UNLV. And it seemed like they all had NO school spirit or enthusiasm there. Infact, they seemed stressed out as can be.

Case and Marquette seem to be eqaul in my book, but I am still comparing cost with Ohio State and if it should be an issue given the tradeoffs.

Anyway, any other thoughts guys? This is such a hard decision.

I ran some numbers and it seems like OSU comes out to be like $220,000 based on their info. Case is like 280,000. Small enough difference I guess. I meant paperless in the classrooom. I think you meant in the clinic, right? Case seems to run a way better clinic. Your own op, secretary, etc.

Both schools have great Mormon areas and way too many students there are LDS. JK Students in Columbus seem to be more spread out across every which way, while in Cleveland most students live in the proximity within 5-10 from the school to the East. Do I need to live by my classmates? Not really, but it makes the ward closer and you get to know them a bit better.
UNLV seems to be similar to OSU as far as the religious aspect of things go.
Marquette- I just don't know the scene up there. Nova also had a bunch of LDS guys, but I am having a hard time seeing myself go there.

I have talked to students that are currently attending. It always seems like those students pimp their own school regardless of which students you talk to. That is what makes it hard. Everybody knows their school and only their school. That is why I asked you fellow predents who interviewed at multiple places. Sure we don't know everything, but right now we have seen a few different places and can compare, right?

I had the same thoughts about OSU. I loved the school and the people. However their facilities I thought were really out of date. I am comparing it to the other school I have seen though. San Antonio for example has a new clinic, new lab, new sim lab and the computer system for all books and notes. You also get your own lab and clinic space as well as a secretary for clinic. My choice will be based on where my fiencee ends up, but looking at how much OSU will cost I wish they had better facilities and an higher integration of technology. On the other hand having been through a professional program before, I know it depends very little on these things in regards of your skill development. You will get out what you put in. My other thought is that the techie stuff i can learn easily after school with little problem. Lots of good questions, questions i am sure will be moot when we walk across the stage and someone calls us doctor for the first time 😀 good luck and keep us posted on your decision. thanks for putting this out there foe discussion.

I do not know if you are married or not, but that will save around 25,000 the first year. 40,000 per year x's 4 years =160,000. Although I am sure they will have tuition increases during those four years, but I am sure Case and Marquette will also

Our tour guide at Case did not 'pimp up' their school. He said the only reason he went there was because it was the only place he got in. And he mentioned the finances lady was a beast. He mentioned quite a few things he did not like about case during our tour. I think most students will tell you the negative things about their school, if you ask.

You also need to factor in the new hybrid PBL curriculum, that most at CASE that I talked to said they do not think it is going to work. It sounded like a great thing to me at the beginning but then again i do not want to pay all that money to be their experiment.

Ask most dentists and they will tell you to not bother with the private schools. Its not worth all that extra dough you need to hand over.

50,000 bucks doesn't bother me much to be honest.
I didn't bother with Marq or temple or Nova or UNLV for this post. These two schools are near the top of my list.

I am really not concerned about Case's PBL. In fact, it is a major Pro in my book having spoken with many current D-1's. I found that most D-4's don't know much about it or may not have an opinion because they haven't been through it. They love it (D-1's). In the end you need to learn all the material no matter where you are. So the PBL is fine with me, in fact it fits my style more.

Yeah, I finally decided to attend OSU and mailed out the acceptance letter. One of the main determining factors for me was family. My wife's family live in central Ohio, and we wanted to be closer to them and build better relationship with them. You know, when you have a number of years of schooling, every encouragement counts! 🙂 I'll be spending a large chunk of the day at school, but it'll be a blessing for my wife to at least have a comfort of being around her family.
I loved students and faculties' enthusiasm about their school. A couple of dentists who graduated from OSU absolutley love their school as well and spoke very highly of it.
Another plus factor for me was the city. Columbus has many sweet memories for me and my wife. It has a great culture and cool shopping malls like Easton and several places to visit and enjoy ourselves.
Overall, I like OSU and think I will get to love it even more. It would be super nice if OSU had state-of-art facilities like CASE, but I think I'll still get a great education at OSU to be a dentist. Let me know when you decide. Hope you choose the best school for you, but at the same time, it'll be great to be in the same class with you.

The game between OSU and UOM was awesome. I enjoyed every minute of it. Yeah, it would've been nice to watch a rematch, and IMO Michigan is no.2 in the nation, but I'm cool with watching the BCS game as it is now.
