Im a fifth year senior at OSU and I got an admission from OSU this morning.

which means its either NYU or OSU for me.

Im pretty sure they are both good schools with their own pros and cons.

But i really have no idea which school im gonna go.

any ideas?

NYU-top facilities.
don't have to worry about finding patients.
almost 100% graduation rate with 97% passing the board (not sure).
internationally known school name.
less competition?

-too expensive; total $360,000.
big class size; almost 300.

OSU-traditionally it's been a good dental school.
$130,000 less than NYU.
i already go to OSU that i know my way around this school.

-hard to find patient? that's what i heard.
everyone seems really smart, with their avg gpa of 3.72!!!???
REALLY ****TY PRECLINIC FACILITY AND THE BUILDING.

There are very few places in the world I could spend 9 straight years. Columbus is not one of them... NYC is, let alone 4.

NYU has a VERY high competition rate....a couple of 98's and 99's came out of there on the part I of the NBDE and the avg DAT score according to predents is a 21+ according to Docs thread its about a 20...and since they have SO many students thats a pretty impressive number

NYU is cut throat which is one of the draw backs to some....its very competitive

You'd be saving a ton of cash at tOSU. Not only will you save with tuition, but the cost of living will probably be a lot less in Columbus. I don't know a lot about NYU, but tOSU seems like a great school. I think that The Ohio Project sounds like an awesome program that gives some very good experience. The students also seemed way chill. Plus, you probably don't want to miss Pryors years as a Buckeye.

Go Blue!

In all honesty, NYU is going to be extremely competitive. As someone at Nebraska if the 3.85 GPA average is competitive. If watching tOSU loosing verse Texas, next year, again, is your cup of tea, go for it. Save the cash.

they just got lucky..

That would be enough to do it for me, you would be crazy not to go to ohio state just because their preclinic isn't very nice. Apparently you don't know how much $130,000 is (and it will be over $200,000 with interest)

Michigan is probably the worst football team I have ever seen play, my younger sisters soccer team could beat them at football. pathetic

I wouldn't say NYU's competitive, but it's not a cake-walk. Students are concerned about our grades and performing well but for the most part we help each other out.

The money thing is a matter of opinion. If you go to law or med or business forums you won't see anyone advise someone to attend the cheapest school they can. This is partly because those professions are more concerned about pedigree, but this concern is derived from the realization that education quality is different at different schools. Could you imagine if dental schools were ranked? NYU would be near the top and it would suddenly be one of the most competitive schools to get into... even if cost didn't change.

I'm not saying that NYU is better than OSU. But don't let $$$ be THE deal-breaker for you as many posters on here will say. Go where you feel you'll learn to become the best dentist and where you'll have the best time doing it -- don't be miserable for four years of your life!

Yes, the pre-clinic at OSU is kinda crappy, but to be honest, it isn't really a big deal. Even though it doesn't look all that nice, I've never felt like we've really lacked anything. You're still going to have to put the hours into a state of the art facility, it won't make things any easier.

Also, like others have said, the people here are great. You rarely see those with that 'gunner' mentality. Most everyone seems pretty willing to help others, work together, and party together. Plus you have the football, which I'm sure you already know about.

However, I've visited New York and it's a great city. After four years there you'd probably only see the tip of the iceberg as far as things to do. $$$$ is probably the main deterrent for NYU.

I don't know about you but I am ready to go experience something new. Don't get me wrong, I love Columbus and have had an amazing time for the last four years here at OSU but I am just ready to do something different. Money isn't really something I consider tho as I am going with a military scholarship but 130K is a pretty decent chunk of change and certainly something to consider. I didn't get in to OSU but if I had the chose between the two I would still choose NYU. I loved NYC, NYU had great facilities and will provide great clinically experience because of the patient population.

My roommate works at OSU's dental school and he complains about some of the things at the school... but he wants to go there next year so who knows? I also have heard some negative things about it from other people (older clinics, older faculty that are a little stuck in there ways, etc) but thats all just hearsay.
I also heard a lot of bad things about NYU but I ended up loving it so I guess its all in your personal preference.

I say NYU (it would be nice to have a fellow buckeye there) but then again I am slightly biased.🙄

Oh and one last thing... F*CK M!CH!G@N. GO BUCKEYES!!

oh, that's true. i forgot about that too..

go to your state school and buy yourself a ferrari f430 or a 911
I would

c'mon
They're all dental schools that are accredited.
I think they're all good schools.

Facilities: I've talked with many professor from dental schools and the state-of-the-art facility does not really help students get better education. Don't quote me on this but from one of the professors, "all the big players in dental society did not have education with super nice facilities"

my thoughts.
If i had the choice to save money, I would

does OSU offer some sort of remedy or make up classes over the summer?

or do they just kick out their students with below C- ?

I even heard that osu even asked couple of their students to quit because they were not really dentist material.

I searched that site for news on Michigan's post-season results, but couldn't find anything...

Go to tOSU, you'll be my classmate, and we know that would be the ****. I've heard pre-clinic facility gets the job done. Even if it was state-of-the-art, you wouldn't be having a lot of fun ;-) All the students I've met and know that go there now love it, it seems pretty laid back compared to other schools, and the money is a big factor. If you can stand to stay in Cbus for another 4 years (I am), we'll both be all the stronger for it! And ready to get the Ef out of Ohio. But Cbus is cheap to live in, has what you need, and buckeye football is pretty sweet. Also I think having 250 some classmates would suck big time

But I'll just reiterate: you'll be my classmate, and we know that would be the ****.

If necessary, you can remediate classes during the summer.

does NYU cut the bottom chunk of students after the first year? or was that just a rumor I heard...

nevermind! just looked back at some past threads and saw that the rumor is unfounded for the most part.

ha... I just reallized that im the last one to join the OSUCD for the class of 2013.

that's very...what's the right word...embarassing?

OSU. no question. spend the $$ on traveling the world and fancy cars (don't forget housing is seven times more than on 12th ave). you can do a PG program at NYU and have your NYC experience then. Besides we don't have burritos bigger than your head in new york.

good luck making the choice!!

NYU's sim lab isn't that special either. in fact it feels like an assembly line and each student pod or section is small. Their clinic floors are indeed nice but that shouldn't draw you in for an addition 130,000 which becomes 175 when you graduate (interest). Money is a big issue because the quality of your education is going to be very simliar whereever you end up going. If you want to practice in Ohio then it would be a no brainer to attend OSU.
