A quick question. I am pretty close to the OSU program. I personally think it is an amazing program. They have great coverage of all specialties, 5 residents/year, good surgery #'s even thought the drive to the VA isn't ideal. I love the faculty there and found them to be great physicians and teachers. Everyone I talk to who has interviewed there more or less shares my opinion.
I don't see them get a lot of talk on the forum. Do they just not have well known faculty? Are they just not a "top 10" program but a top tier program? Are they just a great sleeper program people don't know about?

Thanks for your input

I don't have any info for you on the OSU program, but I think the problemis probably more of a location thing as to why you don't hear much about it on this forum. From the posts I regularly see, the East coast and West coast have "frequent posters" but the rest of the country is poorly represented as a whole. Even programs such as Iowa, which is regarded as a "top 10 program" doesn't get many posts in comparison to East/West coast programs. I don't know if this is an apathy from elsewhere in the country, or just a volume/information problem as to people not knowing/using this site. I recommend that anyone from non east/west coast locations speak up, that way we can learn more about your programs and locations. Good luck

I am also curious to hear what people think about this program.

This was one of the many solid Midwestern programs I've seen--lots of nice people, trains competent comprehensive ophthalmologists for the most part. Great surgical numbers, great people.

Negatives for me include exclusively clinical/comprehensive orientation (meaning minimal academic activity among residents, few residents that do fellowships), uncertainty over this program's place on the national scene due to its lack of residents/fellows/attendings from anywhere except OSU, and maybe location.

I think the positives and negatives above accurately reflect the program. It is a solid program with improving faculty support for the residents (a new comprehensive hire to precept the resident clinic starting next year), many friendly faculthy who are great teachers, and a nice medical center to work in. It is a little "inbred," as the posters above mention, and the VA is an away rotation in Dayton - and I don't know how much "exotic" pathology you'll see because there are a lot of other Ophtho programs in Ohio including Cole Eye - but you'll graduate well-trained in comprehensive ophthalmology.

I'm not familiar with fellowship matches recently, so I can't comment on that. You're all welcome to PM me if you have any specific questions about Ohio State or their Ophthalmology department...but I don't have a lot of "dirt" to share with you, because there really isn't a dark side to the program they hid from you on your interview day.

Thanks for your help. It helps to hear a few other perspectives.

So I had and still have similar questions about this program. I am not from Ohio and did not go to school in Ohio, but I will be ranking OSU highly and probably even number 1. You get great training there and the faculty are super friendly. I do wish that I knew this program's place in the national picture though since I may choose to pursue a fellowship and would love to have that option open to me.
