I know that this thread was posted in 2005, but I thought I'd bring it back two years later because I'd like an updated response.

I was accepted at Ohio, and now I'm deciding if I should bother interviewing at Minnesota. Deciding factors:
1. education, facilities, and faculty/professors (I assume they're similar in quality and ability)
2. tuition
3. job opportunities for spouses/significant others

Ohio is closer to my native state of New Jersey, so it would make the move easier and travel cheaper, but I'm really having trouble crossing Minnesota off my list. How are my chances as an out of stater, anyway? My parents think I'm crazy for wanting to spend more money on travel and accomodations when I'm already in, but I want to make sure I've considered all my options! Thanks!

It really depends on what you're looking for in a program. Is there something specific about MN (or OH) that would make you choose that program -- for instance LA or equine? I know MN tuition is 39K for the year, OH is 51K ... but the cost of living in OH might be less than the twin cities.

I'm having a similar problem with WI and MN and determined that one has a program that I really can see myself being much more comfortable in.

Is there a particular reason you're having trouble crossing MN off your list? Is it something unique to MN? (These are all questions I had/will have to ask myself -- if I get in).

The 51K is out of state for Ohio. Apparently after first year you can get in state tuition but I'm not sure what hoops you have to jump through. Maybe someone that goes to Ohio will jump in?

Good point Angelo -- especially because MN is crazy hard to get IS tuition, so you pretty much should assume OOS tuition for the whole thing. I forgot that OH gives IS tuition pretty easily; from people who have interviewed, its my impression that ohio pretty much makes all students IS after the first year, effectively (i.e. its SUPER easy to get residency).

It is very simple to get residency after your first year. Tuition would then be around 30,000 less a year.

HarryMonster- I was in a similar situation. I had already been accepted at Ohio when I interviewed at Minnesota, but I wanted to see what Minnesota had to offer. Their interview weekend is really great and it will probably help you decide if Minn is the school for you. Just my 2 cents.
