Did anybody else receive an email from OHSU asking to apply to their school? I've never looked into this school, is it any good?

I did. Must have blasted it to lots of people. I applied last year.

I live in Portland currently and the whole city is in love with OHSU. They are getting brand new facilities for the fall of 2014. The students there seem happy with the school, and the faculty is enthusiastic.

I got it as well. Have heard good things about the place, and I have already applied. If nothing else, at least the email gives a couple links to waste some time on. New facilities do sound pretty exciting though.

Got it as well...I wonder if everyone that attended the virtual fair got the email? I would assume so, but it makes me wonder if I should apply there.

I don't see a point in pimping out the school to everyone if they are going to stick to heavy in-state and WICHE preference. I had heard they were adding more seats....hopefully for OOS. But it could all just be rumors. Overall, I hear positive things about the program and the fresh facilities don't hurt.

I've spoken to the associate dean of admissions, and they're trying to get at least half of the class OOS. Toward the end of admissions, though, many of the OOS choose schools in their own states. That leaves it so a little more than half of the class ends up being from Oregon. You definitely have a shot if you're OOS.

That's great that they strive for that. The more OOS options people have the better. But I wouldn't broadly suggest that all OOS applicants have a great shot. That's a little misleading. There's a heavy-heavy western preference. They do still clearly state that residency priority is Oregon followed by the WICHE dental-sending states (7 states). Although those WICHE applicants aren't Oregon residents, they certainly can't be pooled with other OOS students. And based on the data supplied on their site, the school doesn't group them with OOS applicants. And when you look at the states represented in both those interviewed and accepted, it's predominantly WICHE states (7 sending, 7 non-sending). For the class of 2015 they only interviewed 8 US residents outside of the WICHE region. That's only 1% of the OOS applicants. I don't argue that this is what you were told. I think it's great if that's what they try to do. But if I didn't live in one of the 14 WICHE states, logic tells me that I shouldn't bother.

It may have been that he meant WICHE as opposed to OOS. Either way, it's good to know that a school isn't solely focused on in-staters. 😀
