I know this is a pretty specific question, but does anyone know what the dress code in the ED is for students at OHSU? Are scrubs available there or is it BYO?
My suitcase space is really limited now that no one lets you check bags anymore without charging, so it would be easier if I didn't pack of a ton of dress clothes (or scrubs) that I won't need.

Call and ask? It's a legitimate question, it's not like you're asking them if they expect the ambient temperature to be no higher than 80 degrees during your stay.

I did. I just don't trust the answer from the woman who deals with visiting student as much as I trust other students.
After all, last time I was in Portland they promised me it wouldn't rain in July for my wedding...

It rained in July? That's exceptionally rare...

Don't bring scrubs. You'll be given access to the OHSU scrub machines as a visiting student. Most of my classmates wore just scrubs (if I remember right, never rotated through EM as a med student) or scrubs with a tshirt top under their white coat. Residents wear everything from scrubs to khakis to the "emergency medicine tuxedo." You occasionally will be in the trauma resus room as a student, which is why most prefer scrubs.

Would bring 1 or 2 dress clothes outfits for conferences (I think you do a shift on EMS, at the poison center, etc too), in case, but the EM program at OHSU is very "west coast"... dont need to be dressed to the nines.

As stated above, you will get a scrub access card, but I'm not sure how many scrub credits you will get. Usually 3, and you could probably ask for more. People at OHSU are generally very laid back and happy to help you any way they can. The ED docs wear anything from scrubs to slacks and a tie (and anywhere inbetween). The trauma bays can get a little messy, so I would prefer scrubs. Most of the students that rotate will actually be thrown in to lead some of the level 3 traumas, so I would be aware that you may be doing the primary survey at any given moment (good or bad thing depending on how much you want to learn). The ED attendings and Trauma surgeons are excellent teachers (watch out for Dr. M, a trauma surgeon who may not be so patient), so show enthusiasm and you will get a lot out of this rotation. Long post, but hope it helps
