OHSU Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am in state too, very nervous at this point and trying to mentally prepare for the possibility of......... sigh ............. reapplication. At this point OHSU is my only chance and it is just so late already. I am wondering if I should be saving up for the whole process again but applying to more schools..........

I'm in-state also. Fortunately, I've been accepted elsewhere, but I would like to have an interview at OHSU. I don't think many interviews have been extended yet, so don't lose hope. Very frustrating that it's so late, though. @DMcMizzle: do you apply through a committee letter? If you do, I'd start working on it as a backup plan for next year so all your ducks are in a row come submittal time. Better to plan for it than have to rush.

Don't loose hope yet, most of us are fairly sure they still need to interview a bunch of in staters. I honestly wouldn't put it past them to do the interviews in April. If you have to reapply don't stress too much. I ended up having to reapply and and got into 2 schools this cycle. Had a blast with my extra year off too 👍 I bet you'll hear some good news this cycle.

I like you Dr. Watley, even if you are a re-gifter.

I just spoke with someone at the admissions office. She said they will probably be interviewing through May. Good luck everyone. It would be an honor to attend OHSU. :xf:

Pushed back to the 4th page, figured a bump wouldn't hurt. Anyone heard anything new recently?

Some more interview invites sent out today. Some friends received them this morning.

Were the interview invites in-state or OOS? Thanks.

I thought interviews were over by March but I guess not. Good luck to you all!
anyone who are accepted to OHSU should join the FB group!

I hope more in state interviews are on the way!

I haven't interviewed there either yet this year. I'm a fourth time reapplicant this cycle and I've interviewed there before twice but waitlisted each time. I've heard from several sources that they are just extremely slow this year and haven't done much interviewing. I called recently and they said they are still conducting interviews but she couldn't give me seats remaining or when the next batch would go out. 🙁 I got the competitive letter back in November? and it seems the rumor is that with a competitive letter, you get an interview but who knows! Good luck all!

I just got an invitation to interview (I'm out of state). Since you've had recent experience interviewing at OHSU, could you tell me a little more about the process? Number of interviewers, format, types of questions, etc.... anything would be really helpful. Thanks! Hope you hear back from them soon. Good luck!

Congrats on your interview. The interview is really laid back. Mark,(awesome guy) the Assistant Dean of Admissions welcomes everyone, gives you the speal. Depending on the size of the group, you will most likely be interviewed by two faculty separately. You will then spend about an hour and a half assisting in the clinic. You will then probably spend another hour and a half in a lecture with current dental students. Somewhere in there will be lunch and a tour of the school. The interviewers can be serious or completely non-chalant. They are not interviewing a lot of extra people this year so it's probably a really good sign that you got an interview.
From the downside standpoint, I have three or four very close friends in school (2nd year and 4th years) and they are not very happy with the current program. That does not mean that it will be like that forever since they do try to improve the program all the time.
OHSU is known for producing very capable and confident clinicians so that's a plus. They probably have some of the best science teachers, (that I happened to have worked for for 3 years.) 😉
All in all, it will be a great school. There will be challenges with getting into the new building so good luck!

Everything tcn said about the interview is accurate. I'd say know 2 things...why you want to be a dentist and why ohsu. The rest are random questions...some about your app. The people I know are happy with the school. It's a lot of work though. Portland is a great city, good luck

Thanks for the info - really helpful!!! Just one clarification: tcn, what do you mean by "assisting" in the clinic? I'm guessing you meant observing not actually assisting as in dental assisting. Hopefully you're right about it being a good sign! By the way, when I called to set up my interview date, they gave me various choices throughout May so I guess they're gonna be interviewing for a while still.

I actually did some normal assisting - packed amalgam, held suction, placed gauze, handed over instruments etc. But I had previous experience with all that so other people may have just observed. 🙂

That's good to know. I also have some experience assisting (although not a lot) and it has been a while, so I think would feel a little intimidated. Did they give you a choice as to whether you wanted to assist or observe or did they automatically assume, given your experience, that you would assist? I'm just asking cuz in my application I stated that I have over 200 hours of observing and assisting (it was mostly observing and doing sterilization, etc...) so I'd like to know if I should go back to see my dentist to brush up on my assisting skills since it's been a while. Thanks again for your help!

I called today and they claimed they are still doing interviews. 😕

They definitely win for the slowest of the bunch. They seemed to do everything 4 or 5 months later than other schools. Way to chase the cream of the crop.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. Great school but a real pain to wait for! Good luck guys.
