Hello SDN,
I have asked many people about this question, and it would seem like an obvious answer to them; however, I am still torn between these two schools. Yes, cost is a major factor. I have compared the cost between the two schools, and it is looking at a difference of $100K+. Besides cost, I want to know your opinions on each school and which has a better dental program. I have lived in Oregon all my life, and I feel like now is the chance to explore a new environment, but that does come with a cost. Any insight would be helpful. Thank you!

Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU) (Portland, OR)
in-state

Pros:
  • cheaper
  • close to home
  • P/NP (not sure if it is a pro/con for me)
  • clinical experience
Cons:

  • P/NP can affect residency programs
  • weather (haha i'm used to it but could use a little sunshine)

Western University (Pomona, CA)
OOS

Pros:
  • emphasis on interprofessional education
  • community outreaches
  • invisalign certified (something minor)
Cons:
  • more expensive
  • traditional grading (more stressed over grades)

Easy. OHSU.

Way cheaper and a fantastic dental school in a fantastic city. Heard great things. Can't go wrong.

The three pros for Western all sound like Admissions mumbo-jumbo. Invisalign takes like 6 hours on a Saturday to get certified. Community outreach ad inter professional stuff is largely meaningless to your education.
