I called OHSU to check on my status for interview. I am in the "non-preference" group (thanks guys). They tell me that the preference group gets interviews first so my question is this:

Do they ever interview anyone from the non-preference group or are they able to fill the class from the preference group? Is there anyone out there who was non-pref and got an interview invite?

OHSU = Ohio state?

Oregon, and to be put in the preference group, an applicant must have both a 3.5 and a 30 MCAT.

OHSU = Oregon Health & Science University

Mathilda,

The only reference to preference I've seen on OHSU's website is this bit...

--------------------------------------------------------------------
The School of Medicine gives preference to the following applicants:

Residents of Oregon.
-Nonresidents of Oregon who fit into one or more of the following categories:
WICHE-Certified applicants from Montana and Wyoming.
-Members of underrepresented ethnic/racial groups as defined by the -
Association of American Medical Colleges.
-Those applying to the M.D./Ph.D. and M.D./M.PH. Combined Degree
Programs.
-Applicants with superior achievements, such as academics, related
experiences, etc.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure if that's what they're referring to or not when they refer to "Non-preference" and "Preference. If it is then I imagine they still interview non-preference groups. I'm sure someone will call them and find out.

I'm In-state with stats above OHSU's average and haven't heard a peep from them since I became "Complete." From everything I heard about OHSU, the name of the game is patience.

Good Luck!!!

Hmm....does the 3.5, 30 mcat apply to out of staters because I remember when submitting my sec that if you apply from out of state, ohsu has a higher bar.

I spoke with the secretary there and she was most gracious. She explained that the preference group is only non "WICHE" states (it sounded like that). I imagine that's wyoming and idaho and some others. She also said (this was all before the august MCAT scores were out, that they rarely get out of the preference group for out of state applicants when interviewing. Sorry.

If OHSU imposes this type of 3.5/30 cutoff (in effect), it seems kind of ridiculous that it would even send screened secondaries to out-of-state folks who fall below that standard (in either MCAT or GPA, or both).

Now why would that be ridiculous? They have to make a few bucks too, you know, especially with the state budget crisis 😀

Then why send out the screened secondary to those outside of WICHE states? 😕 Unless it's a scam to drum up money.....

Just about everything these days is a scam to drum up money.

I can't believe I just said that. When did I become so negative?!? 😕

I've never even heard of "preference" groups. Then again, I'm an Oregon resident so it doesn't apply to me....but still.

Well, right now, I'm not sure about anything OHSU is doing.

This is basically their preference group ranking system as far as I know.

1. Resident
2. GPA: 3.5 MCAT: 30+
3. WICHE
4. URM
5. MD/PhD

You are given "preference" if you fit one or more of these categories. The more preference you're given, the greater the chance for an interview/acceptance. At least this is how it was explained to me by OHSU.
