As a graduating anesthesiology resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital, I am giving my 100% recommendation to run, not walk, to OHSU. Jeff Kirsch, the new chair at OHSU, is a person I know very well. He was my residency director and the person who recruited me to Hopkins. He has an almost Godlike respect at Hopkins because of his vision, his hard work (no surgeon works harder than he), and his pro-resident advocacy. Already, OHSU will be a top 15 research facility this year. Trust me, I track the research money for the residency programs at my website and have already looked at where OHSU is heading. There is a wave of anesthesiology attendings who have left, or are leaving to go to OHSU. He already recruited the chief of anesthesia research to OHSU, several cardiac anesthesiologists, a former resident teacher of the year, a former chief resident, and several other researchers who are waiting in line to follow. He will recruit the right mix to make it a big research department without ever sacrificing the clinical education.
Dr. Kirsch also has a nationwide network of anesthesiologists he can call to help land you a job. I know this first hand from the interviews I went on. Hey, I would have never endorsed the man if I didn't know first hand from working with him for 2.5 years. We, at Hopkins, are banging our heads on the wall because we are looking for a new chair, and Kirsch would have been a shoe in if we didn't let him go before getting rid of our chairperson.
