I have been accepted to UNLV, OHSU, and I just got accepted to Michigan today.

I have narrowed it down to Michigan and OHSU. I know OHSU has great a great clinic and is very conducive to outdoorsy people (which I am). It's closer to home since I live in Nevada. Michigan is in the middle of a college town and I'm 21 and single. I've never really experienced a college town. Plus, University of Michigan is known as one of the best dental schools in the nation and has the prestige. The ADA president is from Michigan.

I'm out of state for both so the price is very similar. Plus, I'm trying to do the military scholarship. I know I'd be happy at both but it's really difficult deciding where to attend.

It rains a bunch in Portland but Michigan is very cold. Both have nice summers. So the weather seems comparable as well.

OHSU requires me to get a degree which entails 20 credits next semester as well as summer school. Michigan doesn't require me to get a degree.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

I volunteered for a summer at OHSU and it seems like a really great school. The 3rd and 4th years all seemed very pleased overall. It seemed like they were being candid too because they had a few minor dislikes about it (nitpicky clinic things that in my opinion really don't matter like 5 more crown requirements then other schools and stuff like that). Also, since you live in nevada this probably won't apply but Mt. Hood is 1hr 15min away (SNOWBOARDING/SKIING 😀)

Michigan > OHSU

U mich really is the better school I think. Higher NIH funding (2nd highest in the country) is usually a good indicator of how good a school is. Plus it's at a full university which to me seems like a big plus where as OHSU is just a health university. OHSU facilities also seem a bit old to me. Michigan seems like the have a really well thought out program with the track plan type system and it seems like it is very current and adaptive to what is best for the students and training them well.

It rains like 9 months out of the year in Portland. The rain isn't so bad, but it's also overcast and depressing as hell. Summers are really great though like you said. The mountains and ocean are both pretty close (if you have access to a car). Good hiking trails nearby too.

I have heard mixed things about OHSU. I've heard that it's a good school but that it can be difficult to get patients and some dental students had to resort to paying patients to get in the door. Not sure if that's true or not.

But I can say that I do not like how the school is up on the hill. Who places a medical/dental school isolated up on a hill where it can be difficult for patients to get to? That just doesn't make sense to me. From what I've seen of the campus too, it just seems depressing to me. But that's just my opinion.

I don't know anything about Michigan but I've heard it's a good school. Then again, I've heard that OHSU is a good school. 😕

I can't really give input for Michigan, I've heard it's a "good school" but I couldn't qualitatively compare the two. Oregon is in the Pacific Northwest, which pretty much can't be beat for beautiful hiking, skiing and access to the ocean! It also has great music, local breweries and overall awesome/laid back people. Not necessarily the best way to compare schools but if you're living somewhere for 4 years I'd put some weight to it.

hmm... having lived in ann arbor for the past 5 years, i would almost say that i'd rather have lots of rain than this cold =/ plus the thing about being overcast - it gets pretty darn gloomy up here too. pretty much after the very VERY brief, beautiful autumn season in october, november through march is pretty much NO SUN. really not conducive to good studying moods. and yes, it snows here in march AND april.

and it's true that michigan gets LOADS of money for NIH funding. but honestly, unless you're going to be a Ph.D. student or post-doc in some biomedical science program, you're not going to feel the benefits of that funding. it's not like they use the NIH funding to upgrade clinic facilities, or give better pay to professors to yield better teaching.

and ann arbor is a vibrant town - a college town indeed. it's bustling and full of activities. it also has very nice/quiet residential areas as well. the dental building is right in the heart of central campus though. so if you want to live somewhere out quiet with lots of fellow grad students, you're going to have to endure a 25-30 minute commute by bus (parking is pretty much unavailable around here, unless you're willing to pay $6-8 per day for visitor parking).
