OHSU's program question

I am a second year from AZCOM. Before med school I was a Histo Technologist.This originally scared me away from path, but now after going through it in school it has moved WAY up on my possibilities.

Does anyone know about the competitiveness of OHSU's program? Does a D.O. applicant need to take the USMLE in addition to the COMLEX?

Not sure about the COMLEX issue, but it is my impression that OHSU is not very competitive. Path residents I encountered at some strong programs in the West didn't think much of OHSU's program - they described it as "inbred" and said that faculty there were very underpaid, so much so that some positions went unfilled for years.

However, Sandyworks posted a favorable review of OHSU's program under the "Interview Experiences" thread from awhile back. I recommend reading it for firsthand information as I did not interview there myself (ended up cancelling).

Well, I will soon be one of those residents in the west mentioned by QuietSylph 😀 , and I personally liked OHSU based on my interview experience. I haven't heard much through the grapevine (and I don't put much stock in rumors anyway), but I saw that their residents were happy and very sharp, the faculty were friendly, the facilities were beautiful, and the city of Portland is gorgeous. It's on the small side for serious city people, but more affordable for families than Seattle or SF, and the outdoor stuff is extremely accessible for afternoon or day trips. The residents go skiing regularly on weekends and seem to really enjoy the quality of life. It seemed like a solid private-practice oriented program (the vast majority do PP) and would be perfect for those who love the Pacific northwest. They told us that they don't go past #10 on their ranklist so they are definitely getting people who want to go there. The only reasons I didn't rank it higher were that I personally preferred a more research-oriented place and a slightly bigger city. Other than that, it seemed like a great place to spend 4 years.

When I interviewed at OHSU the program secretary mentioned that they had over 300 applications for 3 spots. If I remember correctly, that was the largest ratio of applicants:spots of any place I visited.

In general, a D.O. applicant does not need to take the USMLE when applying to path programs. The COMPLEX will suffice.
